Kanti Prasad Bajpai (born 1955) is an Indian political scientist, international affairs expert, academic and the former headmaster of The Doon School, Dehradun, India. [1] [2] He is known to be an expert on Indo-China relations. [3] He is currently Vice Dean (Research and Development) and Wilmar Professor of Asian Studies at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) of the National University of Singapore. [4] Bajpai also writes a monthly column for The Times of India . [5]

Early life and education

Kanti Prasad Bajpai comes from a family of Indian diplomats: his father, Uma Shankar Bajpai was a former Indian High Commissioner to Canada; [6] an uncle, K.S. Bajpai was a former Ambassador to United States; and his grandfather, Sir Girija Shankar Bajpai, was Agent-General for India in the United States prior to India gaining independence.

Bajpai, like most of his family before him, completed his schooling at The Doon School, where he also edited The Doon School Weekly . After leaving Doon in 1972, Bajpai obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Master of Arts in political science from the University of British Columbia in British Columbia, Canada, and returned to Doon and taught there in 1981. Bajpai went to North America to earn his PhD in political science from the University of Illinois in 1982. [7]

Career

Bajpai returned to India in 1989 and taught at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda for three years, he went back to America to teach at Wesleyan University. In 1993 he returned again to India to the Institute of Contemporary Studies of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. In 1994, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University as professor of international studies. In 2000, he was a visiting professor at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He also worked as a researcher at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. the same year.

In June 2003, Bajpai was appointed the eighth Headmaster of The Doon School. During his tenure at Doon, he was instrumental in modernizing the facilities.

After completing his tenure as Headmaster in 2009, Bajpai left Doon to join the School of Inter Disciplinary Area studies, Wolfson College, Oxford. [8] After a short stint at Oxford, he joined the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at National University of Singapore as a Senior Professor. [4] At LKYSPP, he is currently serving his second stint as the Vice Dean (Research).

Lee Kuan Yew, often referred to by his initials LKY, was a Singaporean statesman and lawyer who served as the founding Prime Minister of Singapore between 1959 and 1990, and Secretary-General of the People's Action Party between 1954 and 1992. Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah was King of Nepal from 11 December 1911 until his death in 1955. At the time of his crowning, the position of monarch was largely ceremonial, with the real governing power residing with the Rana family.

Bajpai is a Hindu Brahmin surname of Indian origin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Doon School</span> Boys boarding school in Dehradun, India

The Doon School is a selective all-boys private boarding school in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India, which was established in 1935. It was envisioned by Satish Ranjan Das, a lawyer from Calcutta, as a school modelled on the British public school while remaining conscious of Indian ambitions and desires. The school admitted its first pupils on 10 September 1935, and formally opened on 27 October 1935, with Lord Willingdon presiding over the ceremony. The school's first headmaster was Arthur E. Foot, an English educationalist who had spent nine years as a science master at Eton College, England.

Quah is best known for his research on estimation techniques for disentangling the effects of different disturbances on economies, for his studies on economic growth and convergence across nation states, and for his analyses of large-scale shifts in the global economy. Quah became the dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, beginning his term on 1 May 2018.

Stephen Philip Cohen was an American political scientist and professor of security studies. He was a leading expert on India, Pakistan and South Asian security, He was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution and an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He authored, co-authored or edited over 12 books, was named as one of America's 500 most influential people in foreign affairs, and was a fixture on radio and television talk shows.

The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is a think-tank that studies and generates public policy ideas in Singapore. Established in 1988, IPS became an autonomous research centre of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore in 2008. A centre for social indicators research, Social Lab, was set up by IPS in November 2013. The board of directors at the institute includes high ranking Singapore government officials, diplomats, directors of multinational businesses, and leaders of academic institutions.

Malliswari is a 2004 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film directed by K. Vijaya Bhaskar who co-wrote the film with Trivikram Srinivas. It is produced by D. Suresh Babu on Suresh Productions banner. The film stars Venkatesh and Katrina Kaif and music composed by Koti. The film was a commercial success.

He served as the Headmaster of several major public schools, including St. James' School, Kolkata, the Modern High School in Dubai, and The Doon School. The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy is an autonomous postgraduate school of the National University of Singapore (NUS), named after the late former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew.

Sunanda K. Datta-Ray is an Indian journalist. He has been editor of The Statesman and has also written for the International Herald Tribune and Time. He was editor-in-Residence at the East-West Center in Honolulu. He was editorial consultant to Singapore's The Straits Times newspaper. Datta-Ray also worked in Singapore in the mid-1970s with S. R. Nathan. After the Straits Times, Datta-Ray was a supernumerary fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

McLaughlin retired from Doon in May 2016.

Christopher J. Miller was an English academic, professor and scholar. He served as the third English headmaster of The Doon School, India from 1966 till 1970 and the last English one before the appointment of Matthew Raggett in 2016. He had an MA from University of Cambridge. During his tenure at Doon, his protégés included: Vikram Seth, Karan Thapar, Amitav Ghosh, Ramchandra Guha.

Uma Shankar Bajpai was an Indian diplomat and a veteran journalist. He was also the director of India International Centre.

<i>The Doon School Weekly</i>

The Doon School Weekly is a student newspaper produced by and for the students of The Doon School. It was established in 1936, a year after the school's founding, by the first headmaster Arthur Foot. The Weekly is the oldest and flagship publication of the school.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Matthew Raggett</span> British academic and private educator

Matthew Jonathan Raggett is a British educator, writer and the former Headmaster of The Doon School, the all-boys boarding school in Dehradun, India. He succeeded Peter McLaughlin in 2016, becoming the tenth headmaster of the school. Raggett left Doon in January 2020 and returned to Germany. He was the fourth Englishman in Doon's history to head the school and was a member of The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, UK. Jagpreet Singh succeeded him as headmaster, and joined the school in June 2020.

Katyayani Shankar Bajpai was an Indian diplomat. He served as the Indian envoy to Pakistan (1976–1980), China (1980–1982) and to the United States (1984–1986). These three postings are considered to be the most important for an Indian diplomat.
