Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve is located in Western Uganda, 35 kilometers from Bushenyi Town, South of Lake George and the Kazinga Channel, and covers an area of 433 square kilometers along the South of Lake George and Kazinga channel in the Albertine region. The reserve is situated in the administrative districts of Bushenyi, Rubirizi, Ibanda and Kamwenge. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve is near Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kyambura Wildlife Reserve to the West, and is bordered by Kanyambogo in the North, Kyamuhanga Tea Estate and Ndangaro Parishes to the South, Maramagambo and Kalinzu Forest Reserves in the South-Eastern side, Rwanjere to the Eastern side. It is one of Uganda's few remaining medium altitude moist forests and was designed as a forest reserve in 1932 covering Kasyoha by 77 km2 and Kitomi by 90 km2 which was later regazzeted as Kasyoha-Itomi Forest Reserve in 1948. In 1996 and 1997 respectively, the Lubare ridge located in the South and Kakasi in the North were added to the forest reserve. [3] [6]

Setting and structure

Kasyoha-Kitomi covers 392 square kilometers. It is located at a Latitude of (01014'470 South) and Longitude (30015'0 East). [3] [4] [9] [10]

Wildlife

The Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve is a home to Primates like chimpanzees, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus, vervet monkeys, and olive baboons, as well as small mammals, Crater lakes such as the Twin Lakes of Kamweru and Kyema, Transparent Lakes, Waterfalls, Deep Gorges, Birdlife, butterflies and moths, reptiles, and flowers. Currently, Kasyoha-Kitomi has 308 bird species and more than 276 bird species have been reported from the Forest Reserve, of which the white-naped pigeon ( Columba albinucha ) and grey parrot ( Psittacus erithacus ) are regarded as Internationally Near-threatened. [3]

One Albertine Rift endemic species, the blue-headed sunbird, is known to exist in Kasoha-Kitomi. The other species which are biome include Afep pigeon, black bee-eater, blue-throated roller, dusky long-tailed cuckoo, white-collared oliveback, cinnamon-chested bee-eater, Shelley's greenbul, Equatorial akalat, and mountain illadopsis and other undocumented ones. Kasoha-Kitomi is also a home to a variety of threatened and non-threatened animals such as elephants, chimpanzees, and L'Hoest's monkeys. [3]

The Forest Reserve have several small mammals, including three rare forest-dependent shrews; northern swamp musk shrew, eastern musk shrew and hero shrew. [3]

Activities

The reserve is a home for a variety of activities such as Forest Walks, Canoeing, Bird Watching, Sightseeing, Conversation Education, Camping, and Community Walks. The Camping Site at Magambo leads to the crystal-clear Lake Kamunzuku via a three-hour walking trail. [3] [9] [12] [13] [11]

Conservation status

The reserve is surrounded by many communities who impose risks on the forest resources. In 2004, Nature Uganda initiated a Participatory Environmental Management project (PEMA Phase 1) to introduce the Collaborative Forest Management Approach. [6]

In 2007, Nature Uganda was given a grant of $1.5m (about sh2.4b) by the Danish Development Agency to conserve the forest reserve. [14] [15]

In 2008, National Forest Authority went into agreement with Buzenga Environmental Conservation Association which was aimed at allowing the residents to use the Forest reserve for bee-keeping activities and making handcrafts and herbal medicines. [16] [17]

The country has a biodiverse flora and fauna reflecting this range of habitats and is known for its primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. There are ten national parks and thirteen wildlife reserves; some 345 species of mammal and 1020 species of bird have been recorded in the country.

Kyambura Game Reserve or Chambura Game Reserve, which includes the Kyambura Gorge, adjoins the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. It is home to a variety of wildlife. The area is an important water source for many animals and is surrounded by savanna, but is generally noted for its high concentration of primate life located in the gorge.

The Budongo Forest in Uganda is northwest of the capital city Kampala on the way to Murchison Falls National Park and is located on the escarpment northeast of Lake Albert. It covers parts of Hoima and Kikuube. It is known for its former abundance of East African mahogany trees as well as being home to a population of chimpanzees. An exceptionally large mahogany tree is still found here and is more than 80 meters tall and some 20 meters in circumference. The forest covers 82,530 hectares and is a catchment for Lake Albert. It is managed by National Forestry Authority (NFA).

The National Forestry Authority is the body of the Ugandan central government that is responsible for managing the country's Central Forest Reserves through demarcating, re-surveying and maintaining them. It was created as a semi-autonomous corporation through the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act of 2003 to replace the prior Forestry Department.

Rwensambya Central Forest Reserve is a tropical forest located in Kyegegwa district. It covers an area of 671 hectares.

Rwengeye Central Forest Reserve is a protected tropical high forest in Kiryanga and Pacwa subcounties that are located in Kibaale District in Western Uganda. It covers an area of 329 hecatres (3.24 km²). It is operated by the National Forestry Authority (NFA). Its WDPA ID is 39999. It was declared a forest reserve in 1932.

Nyabyeya Central Forest Reserve is a forest reserve located in Masindi District, Western Uganda, Bujenje County, Budongo sub-county, and Nyabyeya parish in western Uganda. It is part of the extensive network of Central Forest Reserves managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) in Uganda. This forest reserve covers an area of about 358.06 hectares. Nyabyeya Forest Reserve was created to train students in forestry under the Nyabyeya Forestry College.

Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve is a protected high forest located in Kibaale district which is in the located within the Albertine Region. It covers an area of 1194.94 hectares. It is managed by the National Forestry Authority.

Kasyoha-Kitomi Central Forest Reserve is located in Western Uganda, and has an area of 433-square-kilometre (107,000-acre). It is located south of Lake George and the Kazinga channel in the Albertine Rift eco-region, which is known for its abundance of endemic species. The forest reserve lies within the counties of Bunyaruguru, Igara and Buhweju in the administrative districts of Bushenyi, Ibanda and Kamwenge It was officially gazetted in 1932 and is controlled by Uganda's National Forestry Authority (NFA).

The forest reserve covers a significant area and plays a vital role in the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the region.

Kapchorwa Central Forest Reserve is a forest reserve located in Kapchorwa district found in the eastern part of Uganda at the slopes of Mount Elgon. Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve is a protected area in Uganda's Eastern district of Kalangala. The 174 hectares Lutoboka Forest Reserve is located in Kalangala Town Council on Bugala Island.

Mount Otzi Central Forest Reserve is a 188 square kilometer forest reserve located in Moyo District, West Nile Region, Uganda. It is situated on an escarpment that overlooks the confluence of River Achwa and the White Nile as it flows into South Sudan. The reserve is bordered on the North by the International border of South Sudan and to the South by the Moyo-Adjumani District border. Mount Otzi Forest Reserve is an important place for the surrounding people because bamboo poles and other non-timber goods are crucial for building materials and also provide lumber. Not only that, but the National Forestry Authority Department has designated it as an Important Biodiversity Conservation Area due to its importance as a large water catchment area.

Mugomba Central Forest Reserve is a 100-hectare (247-acre) forest reserve located in Entebbe, Central Uganda. It is part of the Central Forest Reserves of Uganda, which are managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA).

Kasato Central Forest Reserve is a protected tropical forest that is located in Kiryanga subcounty in Kagadi District in Western Uganda. It covers an area of 26.82 km2(2691 hectares) It managed by the National Forestry Authority. It was designated a reserve in 1965. Its WPDA ID is 39988.
