Kautik International Student Film Festival is a 10-day competitive international student film festival, [1] [2] [3] [4] organised by CEFM-the Hermitage, Kumaun University, Nainital, Uttarakhand, in association with the Himalayan Society for Art, Culture, Education, Environment and Film Development (HIMACEEF) promoted by filmmakers/academicians Rajesh Shah (the Festival Director; FTII—Cinematography batch of 1992) and National Award winning documentary filmmaker Shalini Shah. The duo are film faculty members at the University. The festival is attended by students, theatre artistes, cinematographers, filmmakers and ministers.

History of the Festival

Kamaun University in the year 2016 initiated a few unconventional courses; filmmaking was one among them. The film faculty consisted of Rajesh Shah and his wife Shalini Shah. Before the end of the year, the duo along with their first batch of 14 students decided to host a tiny student film festival. It was organised by CEFM–The Hermitage, Kumaun University, in association with HIMACEEF.

The second edition, [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] ran for 10 days and included a 5-day FTII film appreciation camp, [14] [15] [16] [17] and featured a Film Critics Circle of India citation.[ citation needed ] [18] [19]

Aimed at Creating a Film Culture

At the first edition, in April 2017, [20] [21] [22] [23] in addition to the film screenings, open forum sessions and informal masterclasses were conducted by film industry members, including cinematographer Kamaljeet Negi; actor Lalit Mohan Tiwari; Rajeev Katiyar, director of Films Division; film critic/essayist Dalton L, representing the Film Critics Circle of India; and Bhupendra Kainthola, director of FTII-Pune.

At the second edition, in April 2018, FTII conducted an intense 5-day film appreciation camp that was attended by 91 participants—ranging in age from 15-year-old school students to a 72-year-old retired professor—hailing from 10 states, namely, Uttarakhand (Nainital, Dehradun, Haldwani, Khatima, Almora, Kathgodam, Ramnagar and Rudrapur), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Bareilly, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bijnore, Mathura and Bahedi), Rajasthan (Jaipur, Alwar and Bhilwara), Punjab (Hoshiarpur), Kerala (Kannur), West Bengal (Kolkata), Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Maharashtra (Nagpur), Delhi, and Haryana (Faridabad). The Finance Minister—Govt of Uttarakhand, Shri Prakash Pant, presided over the Valedictory function. Also present were Prof. Sandeep Shahare, National Coordinator, SKIFT (Skilling India in Film and Television) FTII; Course Directors Subhamoy Sengupta and Bela Negi; and FTII director Bhupendra Kaintola, who officially announced that the Institute plans to commence short-term film courses at Kumaun University. Kaak (cartoonist)

Harish Chandra Shukla, better known by his pen name Kaak, is an Indian editorial cartoonist and caricaturist who works in Hindi-language media. He is the foremost Hindi newspaper cartoonist, having worked with leading newspapers such as Jansatta, Navbharat Times, Dainik Jagran, Rajasthan Patrika, and a few others, in a career spanning several decades. 'Kaak' means crow in Hindi, which according to a proverb, is the bird that raises its raucous voice when someone tells a lie.

The song Biba which is a collaboration of the international DJ Marshmello and music composer Pritam has been sung by Negi along with Shirley Setia & Pradeep Sran. His song Badri Ki Dulhania was the most viewed Indian song on YouTube in 2017.

Shalini Shah

Shalini Shah is a National Film Award-winning filmmaker; a film faculty member at Kumaun University; and the artistic-director/co-founder of the Kautik International Film Festival, Nainital, Uttrakhand.

The Coolie-Begar or Coolie- Utar movement was a non-violent movement by the general public of Kumaun in the Bageshwar town of United Provinces in 1921. This movement was led by Hargovind Pant and Badri Datt Pandey, who were awarded the titles of 'Jannayak' and 'Kumaon Kesari' respectively after the success of this movement. The aim of this movement was to put pressure on the British to end the practice of Coolie-Begar. Mahatma Gandhi, while praising the movement, named it 'Bloodless Revolution'.

Indira Gandhi International Sports Stadium is located in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, India. It has a capacity of 25,000 people and was inaugurated on 18 December 2016 by Harish Rawat, the then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. It is spread over an area of 70 acres and has cricket and football grounds, a track for 800-metre race, a hockey field, badminton courts, a lawn tennis court, a boxing ring, and a swimming pool.

Uttarakhand Devabhumi Matribhumi

Uttarakhand Devabhumi Matribhumi is the official state song of the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
