Ken Diston Lipenga (born 14 February 1952) is a Malawian politician,journalist,and writer. [1] He was the Member of Parliament for Phalombe East from 1997 [2] [3] to 2014. [4] He has served in various ministerial positions.
Ken Diston Lipenga [5] was born on 14 February 1952 at Chiringa,Phalombe District. He attended Nazombe Primary School and then went to Mulanje Day Secondary School. Lipenga entered the University of Malawi,enrolling at Soche Hill College in 1972 and graduating with a B.Ed. (Distinction) in 1976. He majored in English and History as well as Education. [1] He then completed an M.A at the University of Leeds in 1978. [5] Lipenga won a Graduate Assistantship to study for Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of New Brunswick in Canada and graduated in 1984. [1] His thesis was entitled "Alienation in the Novels of Ayi Kwei Armah". [5] He returned home to continue with his teaching work at Chancellor College. [1]
Lipenga is married to Stella. He is a recreational angler,photographer and mountain climber. In his spare time,he has done research on the Lomwe language. [1]
After working as a management trainee at the Blantyre Printing and Publishing Company,Lipenga joined the faculty of the University of Malawi at Chancellor College as an Assistant Lecturer in English. [1] He left to complete his PhD in Canada and returned home to teach at Chancellor College. In 1986 he returned to Blantyre Printing and Publishing Company as General Manager and Editor-in-Chief of Blantyre Newspapers Ltd. [1] In 1992 Lipenga was dismissed from his job following a series of provocative articles under his column,Off the Cuff. [1] The article,"Of Gallileo as Dissident," metaphorically criticized one-party rule under the Kamuzu Banda regime and sided with those calling for multi-party rule. Lipenga moved to Nkolokosa and worked as a Reuters and Radio Netherlands correspondent. [1]
After meeting Aleke Banda,who had just been released from political detention,he joined a group that sympathized with the United Democratic Front (UDF). [1] When Banda and family decided to establish The Nation newspaper in 1993,Lipenga became the founding Editor-In-Chief. He resigned in 1995 upon being appointed Special Assistant to then-President Bakili Muluzi. [1]
Lipenga became MP for Phalombe East in a 1997 by-election. [1] From 1999 to 2004 he served as Minister of Education,Science &technology. He then worked as Minister of Information,Communication and Tourism between 2004 and 2005. From 2005 to 2006 he served as Minister of Labour &Vocational Training. [6] In 2007 he served as Minister of Trade &Industry. Then from 2007 to 2008 he was the Deputy Minister of Finance. [6] In 2008 he was the Minister of Economic Planning and Development in the DPP ruled cabinet. [2] He was then Minister of Tourism,Wildlife and Culture until 2011,when he was appointed as Minister of Finance.
His time as Minister of Finance was controversial due to the economic policies of the Bingu wa Mutharika Administration,which led to protests on 20 July 2011. He served as well under the presidency of Joyce Banda until 10 October 2013,when he was dropped in a cabinet reshuffle and replaced with Maxwell Mkwezalamba following the Capital Hill Cashgate Scandal. Lipenga was unseated by independent candidate Amos Mailosi in the 2014 general election. [4]
Politics of Malawi takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Malawi is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the National Assembly. There is a cabinet of Malawi that is appointed by the President of Malawi. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Bingu wa Mutharika was a Malawian politician and economist who was President of Malawi from May 2004 until his death in April 2012. He was also President of the Democratic Progressive Party, which he founded in February 2005; it obtained a majority in Malawi's parliament in the 2009 general election.
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo was a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi, and he was a teacher by profession. Beginning in the 1960s he was an important politician in Malawi, and he was a key figure in the regime of Hastings Banda (1964–1994). He has been variously described as "physically slight, ascetic, fastidious" and "cunning". He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013.

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is a public university established in 1965 and until 4 May 2021, when the university underwent a delinking, was composed of four constituent colleges located in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. Of the four colleges, the largest is Chancellor College in Zomba. It is part of the Malawian government educational system. The last Vice-Chancellor was Professor John Kalenga Saka.
Joyce Hilda Banda is a Malawian politician, who served as President of Malawi, from 7 April 2012 to 31 May 2014. Banda took office as President following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika. She is the founder and leader of the People's Party, created in 2011. An educator and grassroots women's rights activist, she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and the Vice-President of Malawi from May 2009 to April 2012. She has served in various roles as a member of Parliament and as Minister of Gender and Child Welfare before she became the President of the Republic of Malawi.

It began distribution on 26 July 1993, and became a daily newspaper on 11 July 1994, coming out on Mondays through Fridays. Its sister newspaper Saturday Nation, now called Weekend Nation, was launched in 1995.
Aleke Kadonaphani Banda was a Malawian politician who served as a Member of Parliament, as Minister of Finance, and as Minister of Agriculture in Malawi. He was also co-founder of 'the Nation Publications Limited'. Banda's life in politics (1953–2008) was devoted intensely to his country as it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964, as it established the political and economic structures of an independent state under Hastings Kamuzu Banda and as it created the framework of a multiparty democracy under Bakili Muluzi. Banda died from leukemia on 9 April 2010.
Professor Peter Nelson Mwanza is a Malawian politician. He was appointed Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development in the government of President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi on 17 June 2009. He was reassigned to become Minister of Agriculture and Food Security in a cabinet reshuffle on 9 August 2010.

Vera Kamtukule is a Malawian author, writer, publisher, activist and politician, who holds a ministerial position in the Cabinet of Malawi. Vera Kamtukule was appointed minister of Tourism on 31 January 2023. Until her appointment Vera served as the Minister Labour since 26 January 2022 and as deputy Minister of Labour following the 2020 Malawian presidential election. In 2021 Vera Kamtukule assumed her role as Chair of the SADC Employment and Labour Sector.
