The Kent Air Ambulance was an organisation providing emergency medical services through the provision of a helicopter air ambulance covering the county of Kent in South East England. The helicopter was funded by the Kent Air Ambulance Trust (under the operating name of the Kent Air Ambulance Fund), which was a registered charity, raising money from public and private donations in excess of £4m every year between Kent, Sussex and Surrey. [1] [2] In June 2007, the service extended it areas of operation to Surrey and Sussex requiring an additional helicopter. It now operates as Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.

Overview and history

The service was operated by the Kent Air Ambulance Trust, a registered charity established in 1989. The trust was founded by Kate Chivers (in whose honour the helicopter was named), [3] and was originally called the South East Thames Air Ambulance. [4] Initially operated on a part-time basis, the air ambulance became a seven-day service in January 2000 and shortly afterwards moved from its original Rochester Airport base to Marden near Maidstone. [5]

It operated one McDonnell Douglas MD902 Explorer helicopter (registration G-KAAT) from Marden. This location, combined with its high cruise speed, quoted by the manufacturer as in excess of 150 mph, [2] [3] [6] [7] enabled the crew to reach almost all of the county within 15 minutes of takeoff (the exception being the farther reaches of Thanet which may take up to 20 minutes to reach). [8]

In March 2008, it was announced that the trust would be collaborating with Sussex Police to provide a night time rescue service utilising the Sussex Police Air Operations Unit helicopter, Hotel 900, which is equipped to fly at night. Prior to this, the service was restricted to daylight operation only. [9]

The £1.6m that it cost to run each year was funded almost entirely by voluntary donations and fund-raising, such as the sale of its own lottery tickets, as it received little government, National Lottery or NHS funding. The service flew over 12,000 missions since its inception.

1998 crash

In July 1998, the air ambulance, a Eurocopter AS355 Twin Squirrel, registration G-MASK, [10] crashed in good weather after colliding with power cables near Burham while returning to Rochester Airport following an aborted call to attend a road accident. [10] All three crew the pilot, Graham Budden, and two paramedics, Tony Richardson and Mark Darby were killed as the helicopter burst into flames on impact. [11]

Initial investigation established no cause for the crash, due to the fireball produced on impact. Initially the pilot's employers, Police Aviation Services, denied liability. On 19 February 2004, following a civil case brought by the pilot's widow to the High Court in Manchester, it was ruled that the crash was caused by mechanical failure not, as had been suggested, flying low for fun, and ordered compensation to be paid. [12] [13]

A memorial to the crew is located at the Blue Bell Hill picnic site, close to the scene of the crash. [14]

Expansion

In June 2007, following a two-year fundraising campaign, spearheaded by Penelope Keith, the trust began operating a second helicopter from a new base at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, serving the Surrey and Sussex area. [15] [16] This newer service operated as the Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. This aircraft was subsequently relocated to Redhill Aerodrome and was capable of night flight. [17]

Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a dedicated helicopter emergency service for the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. It was established in October 2000, and currently operates two Airbus H145 aircraft. It is an independent charity that relies solely on the donations of individuals and organisations. The air ambulance's flagship base is located at Nostell Priory, and has landing pads at various major hospitals around the region including Leeds General Infirmary, Hull Royal Infirmary and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. In October 2007, a second base was opened at Sheffield City Airport. The airport then closed at the end of April 2008, but a heliport facility was still provided for the use of the air ambulance and the South Yorkshire Police helicopter. In November 2010, the operational base for the Sheffield-based aircraft was moved to Bagby Airport near Thirsk. The second aircraft then made another move in March 2012 to RAF Topcliffe, which it shares with the 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron.

The Devon Air Ambulance is a charity providing emergency medical services through the provision of two helicopter-based air ambulances covering the county of Devon in South West England. The helicopters are owned and run by the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, which raises money from public donations in excess of £5.5 million every year.

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance organization

The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is a registered charity, which uses a helicopter to provide an air ambulance service to the English counties of Dorset and Somerset. The air ambulance came into service in March 2000, following the success of similar schemes, such as Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Air Ambulance. The air ambulance headquarters are at Wellington in Somerset, but the helicopter is based at Henstridge Airfield in Somerset.

The EurocopterAS355 Écureuil 2 is a twin-engine light utility helicopter originally manufactured by Aérospatiale in France. The AS355 is marketed in North America as the TwinStar.

Air ambulance services in the United Kingdom are provided by a mixture of organisations, operating either helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft to respond to medical emergencies, and transport patients to, from, or between points of definitive care. These air ambulances fulfil both emergency medical services functions, as well as patient transport between specialist centres, or as part of a repatriation operation. All emergency air ambulances in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are operated by charities, while Scotland has one charity service in addition to its four NHS-funded aircraft.

The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is a charity operating a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in parts of the Midlands area, and part of the South West of England. It operates one Airbus Helicopters H145 and two Eurocopter EC135 aircraft.

East Anglian Air Ambulance organization

The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is an air ambulance providing Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) across the English counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. The appeal to fund the service was launched in the summer of 2000 by top jockey Frankie Dettori, who had been a casualty in a serious plane crash a couple of months earlier. When flying commenced in January 2001, the service was initially available only one day a week. The East Anglian Air Ambulance now operates two helicopters, 365 days a year, from its bases at Cambridge Airport and Norwich Airport, covering over 5,000 square miles (13,000 km2) and a population of approximately 3.5 million.

The Sussex Police Air Operations Unit, popularly referred to by the aircrew's police net callsign, Hotel 900, was a unit of Sussex Police that provided emergency air support in the English county of Sussex. In October 2010, the unit was merged with the Air Support Units of Surrey Police and Hampshire Constabulary to form the South East Air Support Unit, which officially commenced operations in April 2011. The unit operated a MD Helicopters MD Explorer helicopter based at Shoreham Airport, with aircrew provided by both Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, and flew sorties at the request of police control at Lewes, or the joint air ambulance control desk at Coxheath, Kent.

The Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex is an organisation providing emergency medical services through the provision of a helicopter air ambulance covering the three English counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex which are served by the South East Coast Ambulance Service. The helicopters are funded by the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust (KSSAAT) which is a registered charity, raising money from public and private donations in excess of £14 million every year.

Babcock Mission Critical Services Onshore, formerly Bond Air Services, is an operator of air ambulance helicopters in the UK. They also provide services to police, and offshore windfarms. Babcock operates a mixed fleet of light twin-engined helicopters custom designed to perform specific and specialised tasks. It operates from 22 bases around the UK and in Ireland. It has maintenance facilities in Staverton and Glasgow.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance organization

Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) serving Wiltshire and adjacent English counties. The service was launched in 1990, but since 2015 it has been run by Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charitable Trust, a registered charity.

Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance organization

The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is an air ambulance based at RAF Waddington which covers the administrative counties of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and the unitary authorities of Nottingham, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire, England. It is a charity in its own right and not funded by the NHS

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) is a Charity Air Ambulance service providing a free, life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for the critically ill and injured of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. It is not funded by the NHS – only by charitable donations.

The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS) is a registered charity in the UK that runs two emergency air ambulances, the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA), and also operates the national Children's Air Ambulance, an emergency transfer service for seriously ill babies and children.

Peter Barnes was a British commercial helicopter pilot. He was killed on 16 January 2013 when the AgustaWestland AW109 helicopter he was flying collided with a construction crane in central London.
