Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Co. Ltd., also known as KEL, is one among the largest productive public sector undertaking, fully owned company by the Government of Kerala. The company was founded in 1964 and is based in Kochi, India. [2]

History

The company started its first operation in 1964 [3] by incorporating technology from the French firm EVR for the manufacturing of brushless alternators, required for Indian Railways in lighting & air-conditioning of coaches. KEL owns five production units for the development of a number of equipment for Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Space Research Organization and many other space research institutions.

Train Lighting Alternator Division

This unit is in Kundara, Kollam district and is the first unit of KEL started in the year 1964, based on technical know-how acquired from EVR of France, for the purpose of manufacturing brushless alternators.

Transformer Division

The division established in 1969 at Mamala, about 15 km from Kochi. This unit was initiated with technical assistance from Bharat Heavy Electricals to manufacture distribution transformers. [4] Now it is one of the major players in the transformer industry.[ weasel words ] This unit is one of the first transformer industry in Kerala to obtain BIS certification for distribution transformers and first few in India to get ISO 9001 certification.

Structural Division

The Structural Engineering Division of KEL Mamala Unit, specializes in the design, fabrication and commissioning of hydraulic gates and hoists and their regulatory utilities used in dams for power and irrigation projects. The expert areas of the KEL Structural Division located at the Malama unit in Ernakulam district are the design, fabrication and commissioning of hydraulic gates, hoists and their regulatory utilities for power generation / irrigation needs.

LT Switchgear Division

The Switchgear division located in Olavakkod in Palakkad district started operational in 1977 with technical knowledge adopted from UNELEC, a French company. This unit manufactures isolators / changeovers, switch fuses, fuse units / cutouts, distribution fuse boards / panels and castings used for industrial, commercial and domestic applications through their LT Switchgear Division.

Cast Resin Transformer Division

In 2010 semi-automated manufacturing and testing facility was established at Edarikode in Malappuram District for manufacture Dry type transformers . [5] KEL's Edarikkod unit was commercially operational since January 2010 and had already sold more than 2,400 units of 100-kVA distribution transformers worth Rs 24 crore to KSEB. [6]

The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.

Malabar District

Malabar District was an administrative district of Madras Presidency in British India and independent India's Madras State. It was the most populous and the third-largest district in the erstwhile Madras State. The British district included the present-day districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Chavakad Taluk and parts of Kodungallur Taluk of Thrissur district, and Fort Kochi area of Ernakulam district in the northern and central parts of present Kerala state, the Lakshadweep Islands, and the Gudalur taluk and Pandalur taluk of Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu. Ernakulam Junction railway station is the biggest railway station in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. Controlling 376 train routes at a time, it is the busiest railway junction station in South India. At 153 crore (US$21 million) in financial year 2018–19, it is the second largest in terms of passenger revenues in Kerala and the fifth largest in Southern Railway. It is an A1 classified station operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. Ernakulam Junction is also the first fully disabled-friendly railway station in India.

Kundara Census Town in Kerala, India

Kundara is a census town in Kerala and is part of the Kollam Metropolitan Area, India. Kundara is situated 13 km east of Kollam city, 14 km west of Kottarakkara, and 24 km north of Paravur. Kundara is significant for its historic involvement in the Indian independence movement.

Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section is a high density railway corridor in Kerala state, India, running from Shoranur Junction in Palakkad district through Thrissur district to Cochin in Ernakulam district. The Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section is strategic and the lifeline of Kerala economy that connects the state to other parts of India. It is central to the provision of fast, long-distance Intercity and Express passenger services between Kerala and other cities of India. Thiruvananthapuram railway division

Thiruvananthapuram railway division (TVC) is one of the six administrative divisions of the Southern Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. It has its headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the state of Kerala and It is 5th largest railway division in Southern Railway. Thiruvananthapuram Division, formed on 2 October 1979, serves eight districts of the southern part of the Kerala state and some parts of Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu. With 104 stationsin its territorial jurisdiction, it is the fourth largest out of six divisions in Southern Railway. It is the southernmost railway division of India and manages 625 km of route track and 108 railway stations in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The major stations of the division are Thiruvananthapuram Central, Ernakulam Junction, Kollam Junction, Thrissur, Kottayam, Chengannur, Kayamkulam, Aluva, Nagercoil Junction, Kanniyakumari, Alappuzha, Tiruvalla, Kochuveli and Varkala.

Kollam MEMU Shed

Kollam MEMU Shed is an ISO certified motive power depot facility for maintaining MEMU rakes, situated in the city of Kollam in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the four MEMU rake maintenance sheds serving the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. Kollam MEMU Shed is functioning as the control and coordination center of MEMU trains running through Kerala state. Presently, 5 pairs of MEMU services are now running from Kollam Junction. The maintenance works of those rakes are regularly doing in Kollam MEMU shed.
