Kerry Gauthier (born November 6,1955) is an American politician who served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013,representing portions of St. Louis County. A Democrat,he served as Treasurer for the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party from 2005 to 2006,and Democratic Chairman of the state's 8th Congressional District from 2000 to 2006. He had been an alderman for the Duluth City Council and campaign consultant,notably for Becky Lourey in the 2006 Minnesota gubernatorial election. [1] He retired in 2013 in the wake of a sex scandal. Born in Duluth,Gauthier graduated from Morgan Park High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the College of St. Scholastica and his Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin–Superior. Prior to entering politics,he was a social services case manager at Lake Superior Treatment Center. [3]
From 2000 to 2006,Gauthier succeeded and preceded party activist Don Bye as the chairman of Minnesota's 8th congressional district. In June 2006,he supported Becky Lourey's primary run in the 2006 Minnesota gubernatorial election against the party-endorsed candidate,Mike Hatch. He resigned as treasurer of the state Democratic Party to assist her campaign. [1] He was elected to the Duluth City Council in 2009 and served until his election to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2010.
Gauthier was elected to the legislature filling the seat vacated by Roger Reinert who opted to run for the Minnesota Senate. He served on the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance,the State Government Finance,and the Transportation Policy and Finance committees. [4] He is also a member of the Planned Parenthood Regional Advisory Committee. [3] [5]
In 2012,Gauthier endorsed Rick Nolan for United States Congress in Minnesota's 8th congressional district. [6]
Gauthier was one of four openly gay politicians serving in the Minnesota Legislature during his tenure. [7]
On August 15,2012,Gauthier became embroiled in a sex scandal after a liaison with a 17-year-old male at the Thompson Hill rest stop near Duluth. The age of consent is 16 under Minnesota law and Gauthier did not face any criminal wrongdoing. [8] However,in light of the media controversy and proximity to Minnesota Amendment 1,legislative leaders called for him to step aside. Gauthier subsequently withdrew from the 2012 election stating,"I am a better person than this incident portrayed me." His final public statement discussed struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. [9] The Minnesota Supreme Court granted the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party permission to replace his name on the general election ballot. He was succeeded by Duluth firefighter and labor activist Erik Simonson. [10]
The 2006 Minnesota gubernatorial election took place on November 7,2006. Incumbent Tim Pawlenty was endorsed by the state Republican convention on June 2,2006,while the state Democratic–Farmer–Labor convention endorsed Mike Hatch on June 10,2006. The party primaries took place on September 12,2006,with Hatch defeating DFL challengers Becky Lourey and Ole Savior and incumbent Pawlenty defeating Sue Jeffers. In the November 7 general election,Pawlenty received a plurality of the votes,defeating Hatch by a margin of 1%. As a result,this election was the closest race of the 2006 gubernatorial election cycle.
Becky Lourey is an American politician,a former Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) state senator and state representative,and a former Minnesota gubernatorial candidate. Her son Matt served in the U.S. Army and was killed on May 27,2005,as a result of injuries received in combat over Buhriz,Iraq,where he was serving in his second tour of duty.
Margaret Anderson Kelliher is an American politician,Director of the Minneapolis Department of Public Works,former Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation,and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party,she represented District 60A,which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County,located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. First elected in 1999,she served until 2011,also serving as the Speaker from 2007 to 2011. She is the second woman to hold the position of House speaker. She was an unsuccessful candidate for the DFL nomination for Governor of Minnesota in the 2010 gubernatorial election,losing to former Senator Mark Dayton. Anderson left the Minnesota House of Representatives at the conclusion of her term in 2011 and re-entered politics when she ran for the DFL nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota's 5th congressional district in 2018,losing to Ilhan Omar. Since 2019 Kelliher,has worked in transportation management roles for the government,first as Commissioner of MnDOT,and later as Director of Public Works for the city of Minneapolis.

This is due in part to its same-day voter registration laws;previously unregistered voters can register on election day,at their polls,with evidence of residency.
