The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the shot—as far as possible. For men, the sport has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival (1896), and women's competition began in 1948.

Carl Myerscough is an English retired track and field athlete. He specialised in the shot put and discus throw and exceeded the British record in the shot put with a best of 21.92m set in winning the NCAA championships in Sacramento, California in 2003, although the performance was not ratified by UK Athletics.

Michelle Collins is an American track and field athlete, known for long sprints. She was the 2003 World Indoor Champion at 200 metres. Her 22.18 from that meet would clearly be an American record, but it was never ratified. Her career came to an apparent end when she was handed an 8-year suspension for using Performance-enhancing drugs, after she was linked to the BALCO Scandal. She never tested positive but admitted using THG and EPO. Her results were retroactively disqualified. After some legal wrangling, Collins threatened to appeal the decision by USADA. She agreed to drop her appeal and her suspension was reduced to the more conventional 4-year ban.

Crouser is the current world record holder in the shot put, both indoor and outdoor. On May 27, 2023, Crouser reset his outdoor world record with a throw of 23.56m bettering his previous world record by 7.48 inches/19 cm. In 2021, at the U.S. Olympic Trials he threw 23.37 m to break Randy Barnes's 31-year-old record of 23.12 m by almost 10 inches (25 cm). Crouser is also a two-time World Champion and the World Championship Record holder in the shot put 23.51m, just 2+1⁄2 in off his world record.
Raven Saunders is an American track and field athlete who competes in the shot put and discus throw. She was the silver medalist in shot put at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, throwing a distance of 19.79 m. She won three NCAA collegiate titles in the shot put for the University of Mississippi. She was a world junior medalist in 2014 and the Pan American junior champion in 2015. She holds a personal record of 19.96 m for the shot put.
