The 1989 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Organized by The Athletics Congress (TAC), the competition took place on February 24 and served as the national championships in indoor track and field for the United States. [1]
The competition acted as a qualifier for the U.S. team at the 1989 World Indoor Championships in Athletics. At the meeting, Jackie Joyner-Kersee's winning streak of six races in the 55 m hurdles, an event which Joyner-Kersee held the world record in, was ended by Kim McKenzie. [2] It was also the first time that the women's weight throw was contested. [3]

Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee is a retired American track and field athlete who competed in both the heptathlon and long jump. She won three gold, one silver, and two bronze Olympic medals at four different Olympic Games. Joyner-Kersee was also a four-time gold medalist at the world championships. Since 1988, she has held the world record for heptathlon.
The long jump at the Summer Olympics, is grouped among the four track and field jumping events held at the multi-sport event. The men's long jump has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since the first Summer Olympics in 1896. The women's long jump was introduced over fifty years later in 1948, and was the second Olympic jumping event for women after the high jump, which was added in 1928.
