The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA Tour, and features professional golfers who have either not yet reached the PGA Tour, or who have done so but then failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to stay at that level. Those who are on the top 30 of the money list at year's end are given PGA Tour memberships for the next season. Since the 2013 season, the Korn Ferry Tour has been the primary pathway for those seeking to earn their PGA Tour card. Q-School, which had previously been the primary route for qualification to the PGA Tour, has been converted as an entryway to the Korn Ferry Tour.

After a seven-year run, the tournament was removed from the Korn Ferry Tour schedule in 2021 due to WinCo Foods ending its title sponsorship.

Both events were first played in January 2017 starting on a Sunday and finishing on a Wednesday, rather than the standard Thursday–Sunday schedule. Due to the ongoing recovery efforts on the island from Hurricane Dorian, the 2020 edition was temporarily moved to Baha Mar in Nassau, and retained the Abaco Classic name in its title.

The tournament was one of several added to the Korn Ferry Tour schedule as part of adjustments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was the first event played after the tour took a three-month hiatus due to the pandemic. It was played in June 2020 on the Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; the course had previously hosted the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open from 2010 to 2012 and the Web.com Tour Championship from 2013 to 2015. Luke List won the tournament by one stroke over Joseph Bramlett and Shad Tuten.

David Lipsky won the tournament by four strokes over Taylor Pendrith; both would finish the 2020–21 Korn Ferry Tour season inside the top 25 in points, thereby earning promotion to the PGA Tour.
