Kris Van Assche (born 12 May 1976) is a Belgian fashion designer. He was the creative director of Berluti (2018-2021), a luxury leather brand owned by LVMH, and artistic director for Dior Homme from 2007 to 2018.
Van Assche grew up an only child in Belgium’s Flemish-speaking region of Londerzeel, between Antwerp and Brussels. [1] He studied women’s wear at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Antwerp from 1994 to 1998.
After graduating Van Assche moved to Paris in 1998. He was immediately appointed at Yves Saint Laurent as Hedi Slimane's first assistant for the Rive Gauche Homme line.
The collaboration with Slimane continued at Christian Dior for the launching and development of the Dior Homme collection until September 2004. In January 2005, Van Assche finally presented his own men's collection for the first time in Paris during Men's Fashion Week.
In addition to his work at Dior, Van Assche founded his own label in 2005. In June 2013, he opened the first KRISVANASSCHE boutique in Paris. [2] Designed by Ciguë, it was located in the 1st arrondissement, at 16 rue Saint Roch. [3]
In 2012 and 2013, KRISVANASSCHE teamed up with American denim brand Lee to produce two capsule collections. [4]
In late May 2015, after several years of collections often judged as irrelevant by the critics [5] and a style outdated by the new Londoner designers (such as JW Anderson or Christopher Shannon), Van Assche announced that he was closing his personal label for the time being, [6] due to the difficulties of being an independent label. [7]
Van Assche subsequently served as the artistic director for Dior Homme from April 2007 [8] to March 2018. [9]
In April 2018, Van Assche was confirmed as the new creative director at luxury brand Berluti, another LVMH company, following the departure of Haider Ackermann. [10] His debut Berluti collection was released January 2019. [11] [12]
For the 2019 Design Miami fair, Van Assche joined forces with art dealer François Laffanour to present a collection of 17 original Pierre Jeanneret furniture pieces, restored by Laffanour and upholstered with Berluti’s emblematic Venezia leather. [13]
On 21 April 2021, Kris Van Assche announced on his Instagram that his departure from the brand as its artistic director. [14] He also said that during 3 years time in Berluti had been extremely intense especially in COVID-19 pandemic period.
In 2021, Van Assche became Mentor of the Master in Creative Direction at Polimoda fashion school in Florence, Italy. [15]
Van Assche's style icons are Jean Cocteau, for his classic coats and eccentric manner; Pina Bausch, who wore boots for dancing; and Sean Penn and Johnny Depp.
Van Assche lives in Paris and has two Siam cats, named Frida (born in 2013) and Diego after Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. [16] He speaks fluent French, Dutch and English.

Hedi Slimane is a French photographer and grand couturier. From 2000 to 2007, he held the position of creative director for Dior Homme. From 2012 to 2016, he was the creative director for Yves Saint Laurent. Since February 1, 2018, Slimane has been the creative, artistic and image director of Celine.
Berluti is a French leather maker that manufactures menswear, especially the leather finishing of calfskin, kangaroo leather and alligator skin in its production of shoes and boots. It makes leather belts, bags, and wallets, as well as bespoke and ready-to-wear garments. Established in 1895 by Italian Alessandro Berluti of Marche, Berluti is based in Paris on rue Marbeuf. The brand was bought by LVMH in 1993. The latest creative director was Kris Van Assche (2018-2021).

Veronique Branquinho is a Belgian fashion designer of Portuguese ancestry who studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, from which she graduated in 1995. In 1997, she presented her first womenswear collection in Paris and in 1998 she founded her namesake brand Veronique Branquinho. She quickly rose to prominence in the international fashion scene and in 2003 she extended her brand with fall men's collection. In 2009, she decided to stop her label, as a consequence of the 2008 financial crisis, but she revived it three years later, in collaboration with Italian manufacturer Gibò. This was only a brief revival, as the brand was discontinued again in 2017. Veronique Branquinho was based in Antwerp, while her runway shows took place in Paris, the last of which was shown in June 2017.

Anderson originally from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland established JW Anderson in 2008 and subsequently launched his fashion house in London. The brand initially focused on menswear, before moving into womenswear in 2010. From 2012 onwards, the brand and its designer have collaborated with a number of retail fashion brands, most notably Topshop, Versace, and Uniqlo, with LVMH acquiring a minority stake in the brand in 2013.
