Kurt Schlichter (born December 24, 1964) is an American trial lawyer, retired Army infantry colonel, political commentator, and novelist. He is known for his conservative commentary as a senior columnist for Townhall.com, his appearances on Fox News and other media outlets, and his series of dystopian action novels centered on a fictional character named Kelly Turnbull.

Early life and education

Schlichter was born December 24, 1964, in Cincinnati, Ohio. [1] When he was six years old, his family relocated to San Mateo, California. [2] He was graduated from Aragon High School in San Mateo in 1983. [3] Schlichter attended the University of California, San Diego, where he majored in Communications and Political Science. [4] During his undergraduate years, he edited the conservative student newspaper California Review and contributed a regular column to the student humor publication The Koala. [5]

Schlichter earned his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in 1994, where he served as a law review editor on the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review .

Military career

Schlichter enlisted in the United States Army and received his commission as a second lieutenant through Officer Candidate School. [6] He completed the elite Army Airborne School and earned his paratrooper wings. [4]

While on active duty and stationed in West Germany, he deployed to the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm), [7] serving as a platoon leader. After leaving active duty, he joined the California Army National Guard, [8] where he served for over two decades in various command and staff positions. His commands included the 1st Squadron, 18th Cavalry Regiment [4] and the Rear Element of the 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry. [9]

Schlichter is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom (Kosovo deployment). [9] He also participated in domestic mobilizations, including responses to the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the 2007 San Diego fires.

He is a graduate of the Army's Combined Arms and Services Staff School, [9] the Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College, [10] where he earned a Master of Strategic Studies degree. He retired as a full colonel after approximately 27–28 years of service (active and reserve), receiving the Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster) and other awards. [8]

Schlichter is a trial lawyer based in the Los Angeles area (El Segundo/Manhattan Beach/South Bay region). He is a name partner in Schlichter, Shonack & Keeton, LLP. Admitted to practice in California (since 1994), [11] Texas, and Washington, D.C., he represents Fortune 500 companies and individuals in a range of litigation matters, including business disputes, entertainment industry cases, and high-stakes trials. He is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, recognizing attorneys who have secured trial verdicts exceeding $1 million.

Media and commentary career

Recruited personally by Andrew Breitbart in 2009, Schlichter began writing conservative commentary for Breitbart's Big Hollywood, Big Government, Big Journalism, and Big Peace sites. [13] He became a senior columnist for Townhall.com, where his columns appear twice weekly, focusing on politics, culture, law, and military affairs from a conservative perspective. [14]

A prominent social media figure on Twitter/X (@KurtSchlichter) with hundreds of thousands of followers, he gained early attention for humorous ebooks such as I Am a Conservative, I Am a Liberal, Fetch My Latte, and Fifty Shades of Liberal. [15]

Schlichter is a frequent on-air commentator and guest on Fox News, Newsmax, [16] and other networks/platforms in the U.S. and Europe, as well as radio programs including those hosted by Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Miller, Larry Elder, and others.
