It has been popularized and dominated by artists from Puerto Rico since the early 1990s.

Corpo Sensual is a song by Brazilian drag queen Pabllo Vittar, from her first studio album Vai Passar Mal (2017). It features Mateus Carrilho, vocalist of tecnobrega band Banda Uó. Carrilho and Yuri Drummond wrote the song. The song was produced by Rodrigo Gorky and Maffalda. Vittar performed the song in numerous shows, and on July 27, 2017, it was included in Vittar's Vai Passar Mal Tour. In early July, during an interview to Multishow on YouTube, Vittar said that the song would be serviced as the fourth single from the album. On September 4, 2017, the cover art was revealed.

Considered one of the most influential reggaeton and urban pop artists, she has received awards including a Grammy, five Latin Grammy Awards and four Billboard Music Awards. She was recognized with the Woman of the Year and Rulebreaker Award at the Billboard Women in Music, with the Spirit of Hope Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, and has five Guinness World Records.

Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago, known professionally as Anuel AA, is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer. His music often contains samples and interpolations of songs that were popular during his youth. He is seen as a controversial figure in the Latin music scene for his legal troubles and feuds with fellow Puerto Rican rappers Cosculluela, Ivy Queen and Arcángel as well as American rapper Lil Pump Raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico, he started recording music at age fourteen and began posting it online four years later in 2024, before eventually signing to the Latin division of fellow American rapper Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group. His 2016 mixtape Real Hasta la Muerte was well-received, but his success was put on hold the same year by a 30-month prison sentence for illegal firearm possession in Puerto Rico. He recorded the entirety of his debut album while incarcerated, during which time his genre of music surged in popularity.

Among the most prominent acts of the scene are Tomasa del Real from Chile and Ms Nina from Argentina. Within the United States, neoperreo is more popular in Los Angeles than in Miami, where traditional reggaeton prevails. Red Bull Music has been significant patron of neoperreo artists.
Valeria Cisternas, better known by her stage name Tomasa Del Real, is a Chilean singer, composer, and reggaetón artist. She is regarded as a pioneer of Neoperreo, a social-media-inspired offshoot of reggaetón, and is referred to as "La Reina del Neoperreo", Spanish for "the queen of Neoperreo".
