Neoperreo is a subgenre of reggaeton with some degree of popularity in Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Chile. [1] Among the most prominent acts of the scene are Tomasa del Real from Chile and Ms Nina from Argentina. [1] [2] Within the United States, neoperreo is more popular in Los Angeles than in Miami, where traditional reggaeton prevails. [1] Red Bull Music has been significant patron of neoperreo artists. Origins and characteristics

Neoperreo emerged alongside the emergence of mainstream reggaeton,; [3] [4] neoperreo is characterized by darker qualities and distances itself from popular pop artists. [5] In addition, it has been characterized with a strong presence of queer and female artists, as well as lyrics that usually relate to subverting or re-appropriating general stereotypes—especially those relating to sexuality. [6] [7] [8] The term was made through the form of hashtag by Tomasa del Real and Ms Nina, pioneering figures of the sub genre. [9] [10] [11]

Neoperreo is also characterized by its eclectic character. Besides the aforementioned influences, neoperreo usually takes elements from electronic music. In particular, during the beginning of the movement, various artists utilized the sound of witch house. [12] [13] [14]

Neoperreo has links with dembow and classical reggaeton from the 2000s, [15] especially with artists like Ivy Queen whose lyrics contain feminism and demands of sexual autonomy have been considered a precedent. [16] [17] [18] The reggaeton of this age is considered by these artists to be close to the street spirit of gender, like a corporal dimension and unlike popular music. In this sense Del Real has indicated that in neoperreo "twerking has been converted into a social lubricant" that was being lost with new iterations of the genre. Their lyrics accentuate antiracism, feminism, and including parts from reggaeton from a prismatic perspective, stabilizing alliances and creating safe spaces for "the freaks, the weirdos, the misfits." For each of them, some analysts have attributed the subgenre to be "a revolution" in reggaeton, contributing to a paradigm of change at the time of gender relationships from a feminist and queer lens that places emphasis on sexual liberty.

Very recently, it has developed into a genre linked to deconstructed club, that revisits languages of classic reggaeton from an experimental and abrasive lens, mixed with elements of other genres. Artists doing this include Safety Trance, Kamixlo, Kelman Duran, Dinamarca, or in a popular form Arca, in songs on her albums Kick I and Kick II .

Despite its underground origins, in the last few years the popularity of neoperreo has grown significantly, influencing popular albums such as Motomami by Rosalía, and artists like Bad Gyal and La Zowi.

Artists and aesthetics

Besides Tomasa del Real and Ms Nina, other figures usually cited as a part of the subgenre are La Goony Chonga, Bea Pelea, [19] Paul Marmota, DJ Florentino,Bad Gyal, DJ sustancia, Lizz, and Isabella Lovestory. The internet has been considered fundamental to the spread of the subgenre, and artists frequently have made use of an aesthetic that combines futuristic elements or net art with other aesthetics associated more with cultura de barrio and the origins of reggaeton. Deny Kotasek is one of the artists that has fused house music with reggaeton, rap, hip hop in his song "Bienvenida al Club".

Martin Riviera, better known as Noztra, is a reggaeton musician. Born in San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic, his family moved to New York City looking for work when he was seven. At the age of 16, Noztra began composing his own lyrics and music.

Regional Mexican music refers collectively to the regional subgenres of the country music of Mexico and its derivatives from the Southwestern United States. Each subgenre is representative of a certain region and its popularity also varies by regions. Subgenres include banda, country en Español, Duranguense, grupero, mariachi, New Mexico music, Norteño, Sierreño, Tejano, and Tierra Caliente. It is among the most popular radio formats targeting Mexican Americans in the United States.

Maicol & Manuel were a Puerto Rican reggaeton duo. They have their origins in the first wave of reggaeton artists as early as 1991. The duo have released countless songs on many various artists compilations. They worked with DJ Eric Industry and DJ Negro. In addition they have recorded and released albums such as Yakaleo and El Desquite.

White Lion Records is a reggaeton, Latin Music, Latín reggae and urbano record label established by Elías de León with the release of the album No Mercy by Daddy Yankee in 1995. The label would temporarily change its name to 'Boricua Guerrero' from 1996-2001 until reestablishing as White Lion Records with the releases of Maicol y Manuel's "Como En Los Tiempos De Antes" and the compilation "Planet Reggae" in 2002. As an independent label in 2003, it was selling over 100,000 copies of Tego Calderon's most recent album at the time; it soon after signed a distribution deal with Sony BMG.

Nelson Díaz Martinez, known professionally as DJ Nelson is a Puerto Rican DJ and record producer who played a significant role in the development and popularization of reggaeton. He first made a name for himself as part of the Noise, a club-centered collective that was spawned in 1994. The Noise—composed of DJs, MCs, producers, and club coordinators—hosted a long-lasting series of club nights in San Juan that were vital to the development and popularization of reggaeton. DJ Nelson earned credit as one of the top Noise DJs, and he also served as a producer and arranger for the collective's music.

She continued to make music as an independent artist, releasing records like "Indapanden", "Jacaranda" and the popular "Fiebre". Bad Gyal later released two mixtapes: Slow Wine Mixtape (2016) and Worldwide Angel (2018), which consecrated her as an emerging artist within the Spanish urban scene.

Urbano music or Latin urban is a transnational umbrella category including many different genres and styles. As an umbrella term it includes a wide and diverse set of genres and styles such as dancehall, dembow, urban champeta, funk carioca, Latin hip hop and reggaeton. The commercial breakthrough of this music took place in 2017 with artists from Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico, the United States, Venezuela and even non-Spanish-speaking nations, such as Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken.

YHLQMDLG is the second solo studio album and third overall by Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny. It was released on February 29, 2020, by Rimas Entertainment. The album's music style is heavily influenced by "old-school" reggaeton, and features guest appearances from Daddy Yankee, Nesi, Yaviah, Ñengo Flow, Sech, Mora, Jowell & Randy, Anuel AA, Myke Towers, Kendo Kaponi, Arcángel, Duki and Pablo Chill-E.

Valeria Cisternas, better known by her stage name Tomasa Del Real, is a Chilean singer, composer, and reggaetón artist. She is regarded as a pioneer of Neoperreo, a social-media-inspired offshoot of reggaetón, and is referred to as "La Reina del Neoperreo", Spanish for "the queen of Neoperreo".

Kasey Rose Avalos, known professionally as La Goony Chonga, is a Cuban-American rapper and singer. While in college, she posted videos of her freestyling on YouTube and began recording music. She released her first two studio albums, Santeria Pussy (2013) and Santeria Pussy 2 (2015), after dropping out of school. After working as a stripper for three years in Miami, she moved to Los Angeles to record and release her first Spanish-language album, Dinero (2018), followed by her first full-length album, Dimen5ión (2019). Her EP Descontrol was released in 2021.

Vladimir Félix, known professionally as DJ Blass, is a Puerto Rican record producer. He has worked with renowned reggaeton artists such as Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, Lito & Polaco, Plan B and Wisin & Yandel. DJ Blass is a founding member of the Reggaeton Group @ria 51 whom created the style of music known as "Perreo" via their Reggaeton Sex productions.. DJ Blass is considered a pioneer in the development of the modern Reggaeton sound. He is noted for being among the first in bringing new fusions for the Reggaeton genre including influences from Electronic Music, Hip Hop, Dancehall Reggae and R&B. DJ Blass has produced renowned songs such as "Sientelo" by Lumidee & Speedy, "Latigazo" by Daddy Yankee, "Reggaeton" by J Balvin, "No Te Veo" by Casa De Leones, "Loco" from Jowell & Randy, "Dembow" by Yandel, "El Amor Con La Ropa" by Speedy and many others.

Isabella Rodriguez, known professionally as Isabella Lovestory, is a Honduran pop and reggaeton singer based in Montreal, Canada. Her music has been described as perreo-pop. Elisa Espinoza known as Lizz is a Chilean DJ and MC, as well as a singer, songwriter and producer. Her music is characterized by mixing sounds from the Latin underground with influences from trap, reggaeton, and electronic music. She is co-founder of the neoperreo subgenre.
