La Petite Coco (foaled 13 January 2018) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She finished sixth on her only appearance as a juvenile in 2020 but made good progress in the following year, winning minor races in May and July and going on to take the Give Thanks Stakes and the Blandford Stakes. On her first run as a four-year-old she won the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes .

Background

La Petite Coco is a bay mare with a white blaze bred in Ireland by Bernd and Ute Schone who are based near Rhode, County Offaly. She initially raced in the colours of Ute Schone and was sent into training with Andrew Kinirons at Newbridge, County Kildare. [2] She has been ridden in most of her races by Billy Lee

She was from the third crop of foals sired by the Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World. [3] La Petite Coco's dam La Petite Virginia was orphaned as a foal and was considered too weak to race, [2] but was a half-sister to several winners including Laveron (Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil) and Lavirco (Deutsches Derby, Preis von Europa). She was a grandaughter of Love In, a British-bred broodmare who was the ancestor of many other top performers in Germany including Lirung (Prix Jacques le Marois), Lomitas (Grosser Preis von Baden) and Lagunas (Deutsches Derby). Racing career

2020: two-year-old season

La Petite Coco began her track career in a maiden race over one mile on heavy ground at the Curragh on 6 November when she started a 50/1 outsider in a sixteen-runner field. She recovered from a slow start to stay on well in the last two furlongs and finished sixth behind Cecelia Clementine, beaten three lengths by the winner. [5]

2021: three-year-old season

On her first run as a three-year-old La Petite Coco started at odds of 18/1 for a one-mile maiden at Naas Racecourse on 26 March and after struggling to obtain a clear run in the last quarter mile she finished strongly to finish fourth of the Aidan O'Brien-trained Empress Josephine. After the race she was bought privately by Team Valor and transferred to the stable of Paddy Twomey at Cashel, County Tipperary. [2] On her first appearance for her new connections the filly started 11/8 favourite for a maiden over one mile at Killarney Racecourse on 11 May and recorded her first success as she was among the leaders from the start, gained a clear advantage approaching the last quarter mile and won by four and a half lengths from Belle Image. [6]

For her next start, La Petite Coco was moved up in class and distance and started favourite for the Listed Naas Oaks Trial over ten furlongs on 23 June but was beaten half a length into second place by Willow. On 12 July the filly went off the 4/9 favourite for a minor race over eleven furlongs at Killarney and won "comfortably" by two and a quarter lengths from the four-year-old gelding Kalapour after leading from the start. [7] In the Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes over one and half miles at Cork Racecourse on 7 August La Petite Coco started the 2/1 favourite in a ten-runner field which also included Willow and the Munster Oaks winner Thunder Kiss. After tracking the leaders she went to the front quarter mile and went clear of the field to win "easily" by five and a half lengths. [8] After the race Paddy Twomey said "She's progressed with every run this year... She looks like she has every chance that she might go to the top" and mentioned the E P Taylor Stakes and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes as possible future targets. [9]

On 12 September La Petite Coco was stepped up to Group 2 class for the Blandford Stakes over ten furlongs at the Curragh and started the 3.2/1 second choice in the betting behind Love in an eight-runner field which also included Thundering Nights and the 2020 race winner Cayenne Pepper. After racing in mid-division she moved into second place behind Love two furlongs from the finish and stayed on strongly to run down the favourite in the final strides and win by a short head. [10] Twomey explained that he had not expected Love, multiple Group 1 winner, to be in the race and commented "My office is the tractor and I was sitting looking at the phone on Friday morning scratching my head when I saw Love declared. I didn't expect to see her and there might have been an expletive! When I make a plan I tend to stick to it and wasn't going to waver. Team Valor's Barry Irwin was quite cross with me when he saw Love declared. I got a lecture about what I was thinking, but I told him I thought she was good enough." [11]

2022: four-year-old season

On 26 June 2022, after an absence of more than nine months, La Petite Coco returned to the track in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes over ten furlongs at the Curragh and started at odds of 9/1 in an eight-runner field. The British-trained My Astra (Rothesay Stakes) started favourite while the other contenders included Dreamloper, Thunder Kiss, Concert Hall (Weld Park Stakes), Purplepay (Prix de Sandringham), Rosscarbery (Munster Oaks) and Tranquil Lady (Blue Wind Stakes). La Petite Coco started quickly and settled behind the leaders as Lyrical Poetry set the pace and went to the front approaching the final furlong. She was strongly challenged by My Astra in the closing stages but held on to win by half a length. Her stablemate Rosscarberry finished third but was disqualified for carrying the incorrect weight. [12] After the race Twomey, who was winning his first race at the highest level, said: "I couldn't see her being beaten coming here, given the level she showed last year. I didn't enter her in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for fun. I think she's top-class. We decided to start her campaign in the middle of the year with a view to the second half. She didn't have a run beforehand, but I don't think that matters with her... we were keen to start at home. We didn't want to travel for her first run." [13]

She was slightly disappointing when finishing third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes but returned to her best in October to win the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old she finished second in both the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks before winning the Prix de l'Opéra. As a four-year-old i 2018 she added another major win in the Lockinge Stakes.

Covert Love Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Covert Love is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After being sold relatively cheaply as a yearling she showed some promise when finishing fifth in her only start as a two-year-old in 2014. In the following year she made rapid improvement, winning two minor races before winning the Hoppings Stakes and then stepping up to Group 1 class to take the Irish Oaks. She added a second Group 1 win in autumn when she won the Prix de l'Opéra in France. She was retired from racing in 2016 and was exported to become a broodmare in Japan.

Damson is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2004 when she was unbeaten in her first four races including the Fillies' Sprint Stakes, Queen Mary Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. On her only subsequent start that year she finished third in the Cheveley Park Stakes. At the end of the year she was rated the second-best filly of her generation in Europe. She failed to reproduce her juvenile form in three starts as a three-year-old in 2005 and was retired from racing. She has had some success as a broodmare.

La Collina is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2011 she won a minor race on her debut and went on to record a 33/1 upset win over a strong field in the Phoenix Stakes. She failed to win in eleven races over the next two years before springing another surprise when taking the 2013 Matron Stakes at odds of 25/1. Apart from her wins, she was placed in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes, Blue Wind Stakes, Gladness Stakes and Abu Dhabi Stakes.

Chelsea Rose is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a track career which lasted from June 2004 until September 2006 she raced in four different countries and won five races over distances ranging from six furlongs to one and a half miles. She showed very promising form as a juvenile in 2004 when she won two of her three races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year she failed in the Irish Oaks, her principal objective but recorded victories in the Silver Stakes, Ballyroan Stakes and Dance Design Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2006 she failed to win a race but finished second in the Glencairn Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Chorist was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a consistent performer at eight to ten furlongs who improved through her four seasons on the track. After running unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she won four races including the Upavon Fillies' Stakes as a three-year-old in 2002. She improved in the following year when she took the Hoppings Stakes, Golden Daffodil Stakes and Blandford Stakes. At the age of five in 2004 she reached her peak with wins in the Pipalong Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing second in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Albigna is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best European juvenile fillies of 2019 when she won three of her five races. She won a maiden race on her debut and then stepped up in class to win the Airlie Stud Stakes. After running poorly in the Moyglare Stud Stakes she returned to form to take the Prix Marcel Boussac. On her final run of the year she finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Alpine Star (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Alpine Star is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed very good form as a juvenile in 2019, winning two of her three races including the Debutante Stakes. On her first run of 2020 she won the Coronation Stakes.

Even So is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. After demonstrating promise as a juvenile in 2019 she showed top-class form in 2020, taking both the Naas Oaks Trial and the Irish Oaks.

In the following year she made rapid progress, winning her first four races including the Corrib Fillies Stakes, Fairy Bridge Stakes and Matron Stakes.

Tarnawa is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. After failing to win in three starts as a two-year-old in 2018 she improved in the following year to win four races including the Blue Wind Stakes, Give Thanks Stakes and Blandford Stakes. She returned in 2020 to win a second Give Thanks Stakes before taking the Prix Vermeille, Prix de l'Opera and Breeders' Cup Turf.

Snowfall (horse) Japanese-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Snowfall was a Japanese-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2021 Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks, and Yorkshire Oaks. She showed promising but unremarkable form as a two-year-old in 2020, winning one minor race from seven starts. The following year she improved dramatically, winning the Group 3 Musidora Stakes and then taking the Epsom Oaks by a record margin of sixteen lengths. She went on to win emphatic victories in the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks over older horses.

Thundering Nights is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. After winning one minor race from three attempts as a two-year-old she made progress in the following year when she took the Group 3 Snow Fairy Stakes and ran third in the Blandford Stakes. She made further improvement as a four-year-old when she was narrowly beaten in the New York Stakes before winning the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes.

Romantic Proposal is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was unraced as a two-year-old and showed modest ability as a three-year-old in 2019 when she won two minor races from six attempts. She made progress at four to win a valuable sprint handicap race at the Curragh Racecourse. In 2021 she improved again to become a high-class sprinter, winning the Dubai Duty Free Dash before recording her biggest victory in the Group 1 Flying Five Stakes.

Tuesday is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She finished second on her only run as a two-year-old and won a minor race on her three-year-old debut. She then emerged as a top-class performer, finishing third in the 1000 Guineas and second in the Irish 1000 Guineas before winning the Epsom Oaks.
