Laibach is a Slovenian avant-garde music group associated with the industrial, martial, and neo-classical genres. Formed in the mining town of Trbovlje in 1980, Laibach represents the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) collective, a group which Laibach helped found in 1984. "Laibach" is the German historical name for the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, itself an oblique reference to the Nazi occupation of Slovenia in World War II.
Neue Slowenische Kunst is a political art collective that formed in Slovenia in 1984, when the Socialist Republic of Slovenia was part of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. NSK's name was chosen to reflect the theme in its works of the complicated relationship Slovenes have had with Germans. The name of NSK's music wing, Laibach, is also the German name of the Slovene capital Ljubljana. The name created controversy because some felt it evoked memories of the Nazi annexation of Slovenia during the Second World War. It also refers to Slovenia's previous seven centuries as part of the Habsburg monarchy.
In the minds of many foreigners, Slovenian folk music means a form of polka that is still popular today, especially among expatriates and their descendants. However, there are many styles of Slovenian folk music beyond polka and waltz. Kolo, lender, štajeriš, mafrine and šaltin are a few of the traditional music styles and dances.
Nova akropola is the second studio album by Laibach. It was released in 1986.
Baptism is soundtrack album by Laibach. It is the soundtrack to the Neue Slowenische Kunst production of the same name. All music and lyrics by Laibach, except where noted.
Opus Dei is the third studio album by Slovenian band Laibach, released in 1987. It features "Geburt einer Nation", a German language cover version of Queen's "One Vision", and two reworkings of the Austrian band Opus' sole international hit single "Live Is Life". The Opus song became the German language "Leben heißt Leben" and the English language "Opus Dei". "The Great Seal" is the national anthem of the NSK State, the lyrics taken from Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches" speech. A new arrangement of the song appears on Laibach's album Volk, with the title "NSK". On Volk, the song is credited to Laibach and Slavko Avsenik, Jr.
Let It Be is a cover album by the Slovenian avant-garde group Laibach. It was released in 1988 and is a cover of the Beatles' 1970 album Let It Be. It was recorded in Laibach style with military rhythms and choirs, although a few tracks deviate from this formula, most notably "Across the Universe" featuring Anja Rupel of Videosex. The title track is omitted and "Maggie Mae" is replaced by the German folk song "Auf der Lüneburger Heide" in combination with "Was gleicht wohl auf Erden". "For You Blue" begins with Moondog's "Crescent Moon March", which is subsequently used as a counter-melody. "One After 909" includes a small portion of "Smoke on the Water", originally written and recorded by the band Deep Purple.
Sympathy for the Devil is a compilation album by Laibach and follows on from their The Beatles cover album Let It Be. Sympathy for the Devil features seven cover versions of The Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil" and one original Laibach track. The tracks are recorded both by Laibach and a variety of side projects with Laibach members.
Macbeth is a 1990 album by Slovenian avant-garde music group Laibach. It consists of music composed and performed by Laibach for a 1987 production of the William Shakespeare play Macbeth by Wilfried Minks at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Germany in 1987. It is the second Laibach album consisting of music written for a play, after their 1986 album Baptism.
Kapital (Capital) is the fourth studio album by Laibach. It includes tracks such as "Wirtschaft ist tot". Unusually, the LP, CD and cassette releases each contain different versions of every song. Track "Steel Trust" by Laibach sub-group Germania, appears only on LP and cassette. Album was produced by Holger Hiller, Julian Briottet, Laibach, Paul Kendall, Russell Haswell and Daniel Miller.
