The Sound of Music is an album by NSK industrial group Laibach. The album is a reinterpretation of the soundtrack of the musical of the same name. Also included are Korean folks songs such as Arirang. [1] Lead vocals are usually duets between lead singer Milan Fras and guest collaborator Boris Benko of Silence.
Laibach has released many music videos of the songs featured on this album on their official YouTube channel. [2]
The accompanying video of the title track "The Sound of Music" released on 5 September 2018, depicts impressions of the culture of North Korea, with in the opening shot an animation with a chamois buck on the top of a skyscraper, referring to the legendary Zlatorog in Slovene folklore.
The video for The Lonely Goatherd was released on 19 November 2018. It features Milan Fras dressed as a Christian priest guiding a flock of young girls dressed as sheep. Boris Benko appears as the goatherd.
The video for So Long, Farewell was released on 14 March 2019. It depicts a Goebbels type family eating dinner in a bunker next to the Swastika Christmas tree from John Heartfield's O Tannenbaum im deutschen Raum, wie krumm sind deine äste!. [3] The father (played by Ivan Novak [4] ) finishes eating and then leads them one by one through the basement door. According to Laibach the symbolism of this video is that the Von Trapp family never left Nazi controlled Austria but simply went "underground" much like how North Koreans are trapped in their totalitarian country. In their own words, the Sound of Music ends in "captivity and death." [5] This music video also includes a reference to Josef Fritzl with the father leading his children to the basement. Milan Fras makes a physical appearance at the end of the video as a nun.
In 2015, the band Laibach performed in North Korea making it the first Western rock band to ever perform in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea despite the group's reputation for artistically criticizing totalitarian regimes. They were helped by Norwegian director Morten Traavik and Parisian graphic designer Valnoir. The Sound of Music is a very popular film in the country as it is one of the few American films allowed to be viewed by the public for English language practice. [6] [7] It was performed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of independence. They received media coverage from around the world for this - from John Oliver to the Rolling Stone magazine. At this concert in Pyongyang, Laibach presented arrangements of songs from the musical The Sound of Music, which were later recorded in the studio.

The album was well received by critics. Ben Beaumont-Thomas in The Guardian rated it 4/5 stars, calling it "stirring, funny and thought provoking". [13]

Laibach is a Slovenian avant-garde music group associated with the industrial, martial, and neo-classical genres. Formed in the mining town of Trbovlje in 1980, Laibach represents the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) collective, a group which Laibach helped found in 1984. "Laibach" is the German historical name for the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, itself an oblique reference to the Nazi occupation of Slovenia in World War II.
In the minds of many foreigners, Slovenian folk music means a form of polka that is still popular today, especially among expatriates and their descendants. However, there are many styles of Slovenian folk music beyond polka and waltz. Kolo, lender, štajeriš, mafrine and šaltin are a few of the traditional music styles and dances.

Emily Savitri Haines is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She is the lead singer, keyboardist and songwriter of the rock band Metric and a member of the musical collective Broken Social Scene. As a solo artist, she has performed under her own name and as Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Haines possesses the vocal range of a mezzo-soprano.
Silence is a Slovene electronic, synthpop and soundtrack music composing duo consisting of Boris Benko and Primož Hladnik. Their fanbase and their tours are currently limited to Slovenia, Germany and parts of Eastern Europe. Outside the region, the band is probably mostly known for the album "Vain, A Tribute To A Ghost" and their collaboration with Laibach on the album Volk in 2006.
"Feeling Good" is a song written by English composers Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd. It was first performed on stage in 1964 by Cy Grant on the UK tour and by Gilbert Price in 1965 with the original Broadway cast.

The album is a collaboration with another Slovenian band, Silence.

CD2 contains a mix of other songs, mostly from the album WAT.
"Apartment Story" is a song by Brooklyn-based indie rock band The National from their fourth studio album, Boxer. The song was released on November 5, 2007 as the album's second single. The single's B-side is "Mansion on the Hill," originally recorded by Bruce Springsteen on his 1982 album Nebraska. "Waiting for the Night" is a song recorded by Canadian recording artist Nelly Furtado. Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio. The band was formed in 2009 by lead vocalist Tyler Joseph along with Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, who both left in 2011. Since their departure, the line-up has consisted of Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. The duo is best known for their singles "Stressed Out", "Ride", and "Heathens". The group received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for "Stressed Out". The band independently released two albums, Twenty One Pilots (2009) and Regional at Best (2011), before being signed by record label Fueled by Ramen in 2012. Their label debut, Vessel, was released in 2013 and became the second album in history on which every track received at least a gold certification, making Twenty One Pilots the first band in the history of music to see every song on two albums earn gold or platinum awards.
Wilder Mind is the third studio album by British rock band Mumford & Sons. It was released on 4 May 2015 through Gentlemen of the Road, Island, Glassnote and Universal Music Group. "So Long, Farewell" is a song from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1959 musical, The Sound of Music. It was included in the original Broadway run and was first performed by the Von Trapp children, played by Kathy Dunn, David Gress, Evanna Lien, Mary Susan Locke, Lauri Peters, Marilyn Rogers, Joseph Stewart, and Frances Underhill. "So Long, Farewell" and "Do-Re-Mi" are the only songs which predominantly feature the Von Trapp children. They first perform the song on their own late in the first act for their parents' party guests; when it is reprised near the end of the second act they are joined by Maria and The Captain.
"Not Today" is a song recorded by South Korean boy band BTS for their 2017 album You Never Walk Alone, a repackage of their second Korean-language studio album, Wings (2016). The song was written by "Hitman" Bang, RM, Supreme Boi, June, and Pdogg, with the latter of the five also handling production. It was released on February 20, 2017, as the album's second single by Big Hit Entertainment. A Japanese version of the song was recorded and issued on May 10, 2017, through Universal Music Japan, as a B-side of the single album that included tracks "Blood Sweat & Tears" (2016) and "Spring Day" (2017), both also in Japanese. It was subsequently included on the band's third Japanese-language studio album, Face Yourself (2018). "Not Today" is a hip hop and moombahton song which relies on synth-heavy instrumentation. The track's lyrics address themes of injustice, corruption and anti-establishment.

"Future" is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna and rapper Quavo, from her fourteenth studio album Madame X (2019). The track was written by Madonna, Diplo, Quavo and Starrah, and was produced by the former two. "Future" was released as the second promotional single from the album on May 17, 2019, by Interscope Records. Musically it was described as a roots reggae and hip hop song, while lyrically it deals about looking to what is ahead, celebrating the present and also contemplating the past.
