Kentucky State of the United States of America

Kentucky, officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state located in the east south-central region of the United States. Although styled as the "State of Kentucky" in the law creating it, (because in Kentucky's first constitution, the name state was used) Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth. Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 Kentucky split from it and became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th most extensive and the 26th most populous of the 50 United States.

Thoroughbred Horse breed developed for racing

The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word thoroughbred is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit.

Horse trainer person training horses for racing, riding, show or work

A horse trainer is a person who tends to horses and teaches them different disciplines. Some of the responsibilities trainers have are caring for the animals’ physical needs, as well as teaching them submissive behaviors and/or coaching them for events, which may include contests and other riding purposes. The level of education and the yearly salary they can earn for this profession may differ depending on where the person is employed.

Racing

Bred and raced by Michael G. Rutherford, Lakeway was out of the mare Milliardaire, a daughter of Hall of Fame inductee Alydar. Her sire was Seattle Slew, the 1977 U.S. Triple Crown winner and a Hall of Fame inductee. [5] After her fourth Grade I win, Lakeway ran second in the August 13, 1994 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Injured in the race, she did not return to racing for a full year. In her third race in 1995 she finished third in the October 28 Breeders' Cup Distaff then won the November 11 Grade II Churchill Downs Breeders' Cup Handicap.

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Professional sports hall of fame in Saratoga Springs, New York

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1951 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga race course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting.

Alydar American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Alydar was a chestnut colt and an American Thoroughbred race horse who was most famous for finishing a close second to Affirmed in all three races of the 1978 Triple Crown. With each successive race, Alydar narrowed Affirmed's margin of victory; Affirmed won by 1.5 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, by a neck in the Preakness and by a head in the Belmont Stakes. Alydar has been described as the best horse in the history of Thoroughbred racing never to have won a championship. Alydar's fame continued when he got older. He died under suspicious circumstances.

Honored as the 1977 Horse of the Year, he was also a champion at ages two, three, and four. In the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century Seattle Slew was ranked ninth.

Broodmare

Lakeway was retired to broodmare duty for owner Michael Rutherford. The racing success of a daughter of Seattle Slew ensured that she would be bred to some of the best stallions or stallion prospects available. However, her offspring from the likes of Giant's Causeway, Fusaichi Pegasus, Storm Cat, Seeking The Gold met with only modest success in racing. [6]

Giant's Causeway was a Kentucky-bred thoroughbred racehorse who competed primarily in Europe.

He sired 108 graded stakes winners and eight champions, including Giant's Causeway, who also became a leading sire.
