The Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three or four years since 1973. Originally named the Whitbread Round the World Race after its initiating sponsor, British brewing company Whitbread, in 2001 it became the Volvo Ocean Race after Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo took up the sponsorship, and in 2019 it was renamed The Ocean Race.
David Ross MacDonald is a Canadian sailor. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he began sailing at the age of 11. MacDonald won a silver medal with Mike Wolfs at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the men's Star event, and a bronze with Eric Jespersen at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the same event.
Fatima Whitbread, is a British retired javelin thrower. She broke the world record with a throw of 77.44 m in the qualifying round of the 1986 European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart, and became the first British athlete to set a world record in a throwing event. Whitbread went on to win the European title that year, and took the gold medal at the 1987 World Championships. She is also a two-time Olympic medallist, winning bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympics and silver at the 1988 Summer Olympics. She was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1987.
Eugene Platon is an international yachtsman, participant of a number of world class sailing events, including the most prestigious Volvo Ocean Race.
Lawrence William "Lawrie" Peckham is a retired Australian high jumper. A ten-time national champion, he won two gold and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1966–1974. He competed at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics and placed 10th, 8th and 18th, respectively. In 1977, Peckham married fellow Olympian, Judy Canty, the 1978 Commonwealth Games champion in the 800 metres. In retirement he worked as a physical education coach.
Esko Tapani Rechardt is a Finnish sailor and Olympic champion. He won a gold medal in the Finn class at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Peder Lunde Jr. is a retired Norwegian sailor who competed in the 1960, 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics. In 1960 he won a gold medal in the Flying Dutchman class, together with Bjørn Bergvall. Eight years later he earned a silver medal in the Star class, together with Per Olav Wiken. He placed sixth in the same event in 1972, and 16th in 1976 in the three-person keelboat. In 1981-82, he was a crewmember on the yacht Berge Viking in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race.
José Luis Doreste Blanco is a Spanish sailor and Olympic champion. He was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas. He competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, where he won a gold medal in the Finn class. In 1998–99, he was a crewmember on Fortuna Extra Lights in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race.
The 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race was the seventh edition of the around-the-world sailing event Whitbread Round the World Race. The Whitbread Round the World Race ran for the first time with all W60 boats and to a "points vs time" scoring system to enhance the value of the shorter race legs.
Steven Richard Erickson is an American sailor and Olympic champion in the Star class. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won a gold medal in the Star together with William Earl Buchan.
Karl Peter Fazer was a Finnish sailor who competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics. In 1985-86, he was a crewmember on the boat Fazer Finland in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race.
Petrus Reininus Johannes "Peter" van Niekerk is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country for the first time at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. With Roy Heiner as helmsman and Dirk de Ridder as fellow crew member, Van Niekerk took the 4th place in the Soling. In the 2004 Olympics in Athena Van Niekerk made his second Olympic appearance. This time in the Star with Mark Neeleman as helmsman. They took 14th place.
Zygfryd Perlicki was a sailor from Poland. He represented his country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Kiel. He took 8th place in the Soling with Józef Błaszczyk and Stanisław Stefański as fellow crew members.

Börje Larsson is a Swedish former sailor in the Star class. He won the 1969 Star European Championships with the crew Göran Tell. In 1989-90, he was a crewmember on boat The Card in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
