Lazarus [a] is an upcoming original anime television series produced by MAPPA and Sola Entertainment that is set to premiere in Japan on TV Tokyo and the United States on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block in April 2025.
In the utopian year 2052,Dr. Skinner discovered a miracle drug. In 2055,Skinner announces that the drug has a three-year half-life and soon everyone who took it will die.
A task force of five agents is assembled to locate Skinner and create a vaccine. [2] [3] Its name is "Lazarus". [4]
The series was announced by Adult Swim in July 2023,and will be directed by ShinichirōWatanabe,most notable for directing the Cowboy Bebop anime television series. [2] Chad Stahelski,who is notable for directing the John Wick film franchise,is designing the action sequences. [6] For music composition,the series will feature a score by jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington,and producers,DJs,and musicians Bonobo and Floating Points. [6] Animation for the series will be done by MAPPA while Sola Entertainment handles general production. [2] [7]
A teaser trailer for the series was shown at Adult Swim's "Toonami on the Green" panel at San Diego Comic-Con two days later on July 22. [8] During the presentation,the production staff stated that the project is planned to be completed by 2024,but did not promise that the series would release in that year. [9] In July 2024,it was announced that the series will air in 2025. [10]
In an interview conducted in October 2024,Watanabe said that the opioid crisis was one of the inspirations he had for creating the anime. [11] He mentioned that the production team worked closely with Stahelski so they could be provided with fight scene choreographies and on how the team needed to recruit animators outside of Japan due to a lack of experienced animators they could recruit domestically for such sequences. [11] In a November 2024 interview,Watanabe mentioned that he held the John Wick movies in high regard on how the fight scenes were done. [12]
In December 2024,a new visual was released along with the announcement that Kamasi Washington would perform the opening theme song "Vortex",while The Boo Radleys would perform the ending theme song "Lazarus". [13]
In January 2025,it was announced that the series would broadcast in Japan beginning in April 2025 on TV Tokyo and its affiliates,accompanied by the release of a new visual. [14] Adult Swim followed up with an announcement shortly thereafter on Instagram that the series would also air the same month on its network. [15]
Cowboy Bebop is a 1998 Japanese neo-noir space Western anime television series that aired on TV Tokyo and Wowow from 1998 to 1999. Samurai Champloo is a 2004 Japanese historical adventure anime television series. The debut television production of studio Manglobe, the 26-episode series aired from May 2004 to March 2005. It was first partially broadcast on Fuji TV, then had a complete airing on Fuji Network System. It was licensed for North American broadcast on Adult Swim, and for commercial release first by Geneon Entertainment and later by Crunchyroll. It was also licensed for English releases in the United Kingdom by MVM Films, and in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment. A manga adaptation was serialized in Monthly Shōnen Ace during 2004, later released in North America by Tokyopop the following year.
Spike Spiegel is a fictional character introduced as the protagonist of the 1998 anime series Cowboy Bebop. Spike is a former member of the criminal Red Dragon Syndicate, which he left by faking his death after falling in love with a woman named Julia. He is first introduced as the partner of Jet Black, captain of the spaceship Bebop: the two are legalized bounty hunters pursuing criminals across the populated planets and moons of the Solar System. The first season of the Black Clover anime television series was directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and produced by Pierrot. The season adapts the first nine volumes of Yūki Tabata's manga series of the same name, with the exception of episode 13 and episode 29 (recap). It follows the first adventures of Asta and the Black Bulls in the Clover Kingdom. After Asta receives a grimoire and joins the Black Bulls to become the new Wizard King, he explores a dungeon and meets Mars, a magic knight from the Diamond Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Asta is captured during a zombie invasion of the capital by a group of rogue mages who are working for the Eye of the Midnight Sun squad. After Asta is rescued, he teams up with a fellow Black Bull and later on his captain to battle some child kidnappers. Later on, the Black Bulls travel to the Underwater Temple and meet a series of challenges to find a magic stone.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus is an animated miniseries based on the Blade Runner franchise, which itself is based on the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The series aired from November 2021 to February 2022. It was a co-production between Adult Swim and Crunchyroll, in partnership with Alcon Television Group.
UniteUp! is a multi-dimensional idol project presented by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. It started with a YouTube channel created in November 2021, with songs from various artists released in the channel. An anime television series by CloverWorks ran from January 2023 to April 2023. A second season, titled UniteUp! -Uni:Birth-, is set to premiere in January 2025.
