LeFeuvre Scarp ( 69°21′S63°18′W / 69.350°S 63.300°W / -69.350; -63.300 Coordinates: 69°21′S63°18′W / 69.350°S 63.300°W / -69.350; -63.300 ) is an irregular cliff-like elevation, 750 metres (2,460 ft) high, situated 11 nautical miles (20 km) west of Cape Reichelderfer on the east side of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It marks the north side of the divide between Bingham Glacier and a smaller unnamed glacier next northward. The feature was photographed from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth in 1935, the United States Antarctic Service in 1940, and the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947, and was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1947. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1962 after Charles F. LeFeuvre, a radio operator at Brunt Ice Shelf in 1956, Signy Island in 1959, and Horseshoe Island and Stonington Island in 1960. [1]

A geographic coordinate system is a coordinate system that enables every location on Earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. The coordinates are often chosen such that one of the numbers represents a vertical position and two or three of the numbers represent a horizontal position; alternatively, a geographic position may be expressed in a combined three-dimensional Cartesian vector. A common choice of coordinates is latitude, longitude and elevation. To specify a location on a plane requires a map projection.

Cape Reichelderfer is a rounded, mainly ice-covered headland 4 nautical miles (7 km) east of DeBusk Scarp, lying at the west side of Stefansson Strait on the east coast of Palmer Land. This cape was seen by Sir Hubert Wilkins who explored this coast on his aerial flight of December 20, 1928. It was charted in 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) and erroneously called Cape Rymill at that time. Resighted in 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) under Ronne who named it for Francis W. Reichelderfer, Chief of the U.S. Weather Bureau.

Palmer Land geographic region

Palmer Land is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica that lies south of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This application of Palmer Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between US-ACAN and UK-APC, in which the name Antarctic Peninsula was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69 degrees south.

Anthony Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Anthony Glacier is a glacier which flows in an east-southeast direction to the east coast of Palmer Land where it terminates opposite the south tip of Hearst Island. The upper part of this glacier was seen by a sledge party of the British Graham Land Expedition under John Riddoch Rymill in 1936–37. The glacier was seen from the seaward side in 1940 by a sledging party from the East Base of the United States Antarctic Service, and in 1947 was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE). It was named by Finn Ronne for Alexander Anthony of the J.P. Stevens Company, New York City, which contributed windproof clothing to the RARE.

Bartók Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Bartók Glacier is a glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, flowing southwest from the southern end of the Elgar Uplands in the northern part of Alexander Island. It was first photographed from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók.

Bearman Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Bearman Glacier is a glacier whose head is east of Mount Howell in central Thurston Island. The glacier flows south into Schwartz Cove on the south side of the island. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after F.O. Bearman, Photographer's Mate in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of this glacier and adjacent coastal areas, 1946–47.

Bevin Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Bevin Glacier is a glacier 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, which flows east from the plateau escarpment on the east side of Graham Land into the northwest end of Cabinet Inlet between Attlee Glacier and Anderson Glacier. During December 1947 it was charted by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition. It was named by the FIDS for Rt. Hon. Ernest Bevin, M.P., British Minister of Labour and National Service and member of the War Cabinet.

Norwood Scarp is a distinct, 18 km long and 1525 m high cliff in the East of Palmer Land on the Antarctic Peninsula. It is on the east flank of the Weyerhaeuser Glacier.

Walter Glacier is a glacier flowing east-northeast, merging with the south side of Moran Glacier to enter Schokalsky Bay, situated in the northeast portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Commander Howard J. Walter, U.S. Navy, LC-130 aircraft commander, Squadron VXE-6, Operation Deepfreeze, 1970 and 1971.

Crescent Scarp is a conspicuous, north-facing escarpment of rock and ice cliffs, rising to 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) on the south side of Fleming Glacier in northern Palmer Land. It was roughly surveyed from the ground by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1936-37, and photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940 and the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. It was resurveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958, and named descriptively.

Crume Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Crume Glacier is a tributary glacier, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, flowing east to enter Ommanney Glacier near the north coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. The geographical feature was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for William R. Crume, AS1, U.S. Navy, Support Equipment Maintenance Supervisor with Squadron VX-6 at McMurdo Station, Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island, during Operation Deep Freeze 1968. The glacier lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

DeBusk Scarp is a nearly vertical rock cliff, 2 nautical miles (4 km) long and rising to 300 metres (1,000 ft), at the south side of the mouth of Bingham Glacier, on the east coast of Palmer Land. This feature was photographed from the air in 1928 by Sir Hubert Wilkins, and again in 1940 by members of the United States Antarctic Service who also sledge surveyed along this coast. It was resighted by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, under Finn Ronne, who named it after Clarence DeBusk, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Beaumont, Texas, who was of assistance to the RARE in the preparation for the voyage south.

Delius Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, flowing west from the Elgar Uplands into Nichols Snowfield, in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. It was more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February 1975. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Frederick Delius, the British composer.

The Guettard Range is a mountain range, 40 nautical miles (74 km) long and 10 nautical miles (19 km) wide, located northwest of Bowman Peninsula and between Johnston Glacier and Irvine Glacier, in the southeastern extremity of Palmer Land, Antarctica. The feature was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48. It was mapped from United States Geological Survey surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–67, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for French naturalist and geologist Jean-Étienne Guettard.

Grimley Glacier is a tributary glacier, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, lying 3 nautical miles north of Sunfix Glacier and flowing east-northeast into Casey Glacier in northern Palmer Land, Antarctica. The glacier was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 28, 1940, and by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition on December 22, 1947. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in December 1960 and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Peter H. Grimley of FIDS, a geologist at Horseshoe Island and Stonington Island in 1960.

Doss Glacier is a small glacier just east of Mount Boman, flowing into Nimrod Glacier from the northern slopes of the Queen Elizabeth Range. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from tellurometer surveys and Navy air photos, 1960–62, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Edgar L. Doss, a United States Antarctic Research Program glaciologist at Roosevelt Island, 1962–63.

Palestrina Glacier is a glacier lying in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 11 nautical miles (20 km) long and 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide, flowing west from Nichols Snowfield into Lazarev Bay. The glacier was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Giovanni da Palestrina (1525–1594), Italian composer.

Foreman Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Foreman Glacier is a glacier flowing south-southeast from the Havre Mountains in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It drains the southwest slopes of Dimitrova Peak and the west slopes of Breze Peak and flows into Palestrina Glacier north of Balan Ridge in Sofia University Mountains. The glacier was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1975–76, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1980 after David Alexander Foreman, a BAS aircraft mechanic at Adelaide Station, 1973–76.

Haines Glacier is a glacier 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, flowing in a southeasterly direction and joining Meinardus Glacier immediately east of Mount Barkow, on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was discovered and photographed from the air in December 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service. During 1947 the glacier was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) charted it from the ground. The glacier was named by the FIDS for William C. Haines, an American meteorologist who was a member of the Byrd Antarctic Expeditions of 1928–30 and 1933–35, and was joint author of the meteorological reports of these two expeditions.

Moran Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Moran Glacier is a glacier 10 nautical miles (18 km) long, joined at the south side by Walter Glacier, flowing east into Schokalsky Bay, situated in the northeast portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, and surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1948-50. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Clifford D. Moran, U.S. Navy, aircraft pilot, Squadron VXE-6, U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze, 1966 and 1977.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who travelled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Long Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Long Glacier is a glacier about 8 nautical miles long in the southeastern part of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It flows south to the Abbot Ice Shelf, 14 nautical miles (26 km) west of Harrison Nunatak. The glacier was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Fred A. Long, Jr., an aviation machinist of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, who wintered at Little America V in 1957 and was in Antarctica in the 1960–61 and 1962–63 seasons.
