Leonardo Sistemi di Difesa is an Italian defense company part of the Leonardo conglomerate.

The plant based in Livorno came about when the Whitehead Torpedo Works was purchased by Giuseppe Orlando in 1924, one of the owners of the Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando of Livorno. Whitehead Torpedo established the Società Moto Fides that initially produced motorcycles but changed the production to that of torpedoes.

With the end of World War II the Fiume factory closed and merged with Moto Fides forming the Whitehead Moto Fides Stabilimenti Meccanici Riuniti on 31 July 1945. [1]

The Whitehead Moto Fides continued the production of torpedoes in a new plant which opened in 1977. It entered in the Fiat Group in 1979. They manufactured 1000 A244 light torpedo sold to 15 Navies. [2]

The Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS) produced heavy and light torpedoes, anti-torpedo countermeasure systems for submarines and ships and sonar systems for underwater surveillance. [3]

In 1995 the company passed definitely to Finmeccanica. It is now[ when? ] owned by Leonardo S.p.A., as the latter has been renamed since 2018.

GEIE EuroTorp is a consortium that produces the MU90 anti-submarine torpedo. EuroTorp was formed in July 1993 by French and Italian defense companies after their governments signed a memorandum of understanding on industrial cooperation for the development of a common lightweight torpedo.

Giovanni de Ciotta was the first-born son of Lorenzo de Ciotta and Luisa de Adamich, daughter of the foremost Fiuman merchant and father of modernisation in Fiume, Andrea Lodovico de Adamich. The family de Ciotta originated from Livorno, where Giovanni served the Austrian army as an engineer. As an officer of the Austrian engineer corps, he fought in Italy in the 1848-49 campaigns and remained in the army until 1859. He arrived in Fiume in 1859 from Livorno, after having resigned from the Austrian army, reputedly for political reasons. Numerous 45 cm torpedoes have been used by the Imperial Japanese Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. The size category has not been used by Japan since the end of the Second World War.

The A184 is an Italian heavyweight wire-guided torpedo originally developed by Whitehead SpA. It can be launched from surface vessels and submarines and locates the target using an acoustic seeker. The torpedo body is of a standard 21-inch form factor.

Whitehead Torpedo Works was a company established in the 19th century by Robert Whitehead that developed the Whitehead torpedo. It grew from its initial location at Fiume to Wyke Regis and to Livorno, but the former two plants closed by the end of World War II. The Italian branch maintained the name Whitehead for a long time into the late 20th century, and still exists as Leonardo Sistemi di Difesa as of 2024.
