Leopold Eric Kyanda (born 1 January 1970), is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He currently serves as the Joint Chief of Staff of the UPDF, effective 24 June 2021. He replaced Lieutenant General Joseph Musanyufu who was redeployed to the civil service. [1]

Before that, he was the Chief of Staff of the Land Forces in the UPDF. replacing Major General Charles Angina, who was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda (DCDF). [2] inspector General of Police

Military career

Leo Kyanda was born on 1 January 1970. [3] Ugandan press reports indicate that in 1994, he was an Aide de Camp to General Ivan Koreta, at that time, a Brigadier and was also his driver in that year. [4] He later joined the then Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB), which today is part of the Special Forces Group (SFG). He rose in its ranks and eventually became the Commander of the PGB. Following that, he became the Commandant of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). From there, he was assigned to the Ugandan Embassy in Washington, D.C., as the Military Attaché, serving in that capacity for two years. On his return to Uganda, he was appointed Chief of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF. From there, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier and assigned the post of Chief of Staff of Land Forces of Uganda. [5] In December 2017, Kyanda completed a military course from the National Defence College in India. [6]

In February 2019 he was promoted from the rank of Brigadier to that of Major General, as a part of a promotions exercise involving over 2,000 men and women of the UPDF. [7]

Personal life

He is the husband to Judy Rugasira Kyanda, the country manager for Knight Frank Uganda Ltd and a father of two daughters. [8]

Major General Elly Kayanja, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective September 2014, he is the Head of Operation Wealth Creation Programme, whose objective is to improve the standard of living of rural citizens, through farming. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director of National Intelligence, under General David Sejusa. Prior to that, he served as the Director General of the Internal Security Organisation.

Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, is Ugandan army officer. He currently serves as Commander Of Land forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under operation code named Operation Shujja. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by General Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).

Major General Moses Ddiba Ssentongo is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He is one of two deputy director generals of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the investment vehicle of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position in March 2016. Before that, from June 2013 until June 2014, he served as the chairman of the UPDF General Court Martial, one of the highest military courts in the UPDF. Before that, Ssentongo served as the political commissar of the UPDF. He replaced Fred Tolit, who was appointed as Uganda’s Defense Attaché to the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Major General Fred Ociti Tolit, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defense Force. He currently serves as Uganda's Defense Attaché to South Africa, based at the country's embassy in Pretoria. He previously served as Uganda's defence attaché to Burundi, based at Uganda's Embassy in Bujumbura, since 2016.

Major General Sam Kavuma, whose full name is Samuel Kavuma, is a Ugandan senior military officer. He currently serves as the deputy coordinator of the Operation Wealth Creation effective 24 June 2021, he was appointed by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Immediately prior to his current position, he served as the deputy commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Air Force. Before that, Kavuma served as the Commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia. He was appointed to that position in October 2014. He replaced Brigadier Dick Olum, who served in that position from September 2013 until October 2014.

Major General Innocent Felix Oula is a senior army officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). As of March 2020, he serves as the Head of Civil Military Cooperation. He concurrently serves as one of the UPDF representatives to the Parliament of Uganda. He was elected to that position in January 2014, replacing renegade General David Sejusa, who was expelled from Parliament.

Lieutenant General Charles Lwanga Lutaaya, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He a presidential advisor on matters of Airforce. Before that, he was the Commander of the UPDF Air Force after having served as Deputy Commander of the UPDF Air Force.

Peter Elwelu is a Lieutenant General in the Ugandan military, known formally as the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position on 24 June 2021 Since 9 January 2017, he has served as the commander of land forces, which is the fourth-highest position in the UPDF hierarchy. Prior to that, from June 2013 until January 2017, he was the commander of the UPDF 2nd division, based in Mbarara, the largest town in Uganda's Western Region. Elwelu is most known for the Kasese massacre in which according to Human Rights Watch 153 people, including children, were killed. "They deserved to die" he told the Observer in May 2021.

Major General Gavas Mugyenyi, also Garvas Mugyenyi is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He serves as Uganda's military attache to India, effective January 2020.

Major General Steven Sabiiti Muzeyi, is a Ugandan military officer and police officer, who served as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) of the Uganda Police Force, the second-highest rank in that branch of the Ugandan government, from 4 March 2018 until 16 December 2020. He replaced Martin Okoth Ochola, who was promoted to Inspector General of Police. Immediately prior to his assignment as Deputy IGP, Sabiiti, at the rank of brigadier, served as the Commander of the Military Police of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Sabiiti was replaced as Deputy IGP by Major General Paul Lokech. On Friday, 5 February 2021, Major Genenral Sabiiti Muzeyi was appointed General Manager Luwero Industries, a subsidiary of National Enterprise Corporation (NEC).

Joseph Musanyufu, is a lieutenant general in the Uganda People's Defence Force,(UPDF), who serves as the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda. Immediately prior to his current appointment, he served as Joint Chief of Staff, the third highest rank in the Ugandan military, and is known to have four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters . Musanyufu also served as the Chief of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF, a position that he was appointed to in 2014.

Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, effective 26 October 2021. Before that, he was the Commander of the Uganda Contingent in Somalia as part of AMISOM.

Hudson Mukasa is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Since June 2016, he has been the Military Attaché to Uganda's Embassy to Kenya, based in Nairobi. Before that he served as the Military Attaché Uganda's Embassy to Burundi, based in Bujumbura.

James Birungi, is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force Air Force (UPDAF). He serves as the Chief of Military Intelligence in the UPDF, effective January 2022.

Major General Abel Kandiho, is a Ugandan military officer. He serves as the Joint Chief of Staff in the Uganda Police Force, effective 9 February 2022.
