Joseph Musanyufu, is a lieutenant general in the Uganda People's Defence Force,(UPDF), who serves as the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda. Immediately prior to his current appointment, he served as Joint Chief of Staff, the third highest rank in the Ugandan military, and is known to have four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters . [1] Musanyufu also served as the Chief of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF, a position that he was appointed to in 2014. [2]

Musanyufu replaced Wilson Mbadi, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed as deputy chief of defence forces in the UPDF. [3] Musanyufu, who was a brigadier prior to his current appointment, was promoted to major general at the time he was appointed as joint chief of staff. [1]

Background and education

He was born circa 1962 [4] in present-day Bushenyi District, in Uganda's Western Region. Prior to joining the military, he studied at Kitabi Seminary, in Bushenyi District and Ntare School in Mbarara District becoming one of the top students in his year. He later went to Makerere University graduating with 1st-class honors bachelor's degree in economics. [5]

During his service in the UPDF, he attended a senior command course at a staff college in the United States and staff college at Royal Military College Sandhurst [United Kingdom] and another course at the National Defense College in India. [2]

Career

In August 1985, Musanyufu joined the National Resistance Army, the precursor to the UPDF. At that time, his recruit class included James Mugira, Shaban Bantariza and David Muhoozi. [5] He at one time served as an ADC to Mugisha Muntu, then the commander of the Ugandan military. Musanyufu also served as the deputy to the late Nobel Mayombo, at the time Mayombo served as the chief of military intelligence. [5]

Later, Musanyufu served as chief comptroller finance of the UPDF and then as chief of integrated resource management information system. [2] In his new role as the UPDF joint chief of staff, he is a close military adviser to the president of Uganda, who is also the commander in chief of the UPDF. [4]

On 8 February 2019, over 2,000 UPDF men and women were promoted on one day. That day Joseph Musanyufu was promoted from the rank of major general to that of lieutenant general. [6]

Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, is Ugandan army officer. He currently serves as Commander Of Land forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under operation code named Operation Shujja. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by General Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).

Major General Fred Ociti Tolit, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defense Force. He currently serves as Uganda's Defense Attaché to South Africa, based at the country's embassy in Pretoria. He previously served as Uganda's defence attaché to Burundi, based at Uganda's Embassy in Bujumbura, since 2016.

James Nakibus Lakara, commonly known as Nakibus Lakara, is a Ugandan Lieutenant General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Since June 2016, he has been the commander of the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre based in Jinja in the Eastern Region of Uganda. From April 2015 until June 2016, he served as the deputy force commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and was in charge of logistical support. From July 2013 until April 2015, he served as the commanding officer of the UPDF 3rd Division, based in Moroto.

James Mugira is a lieutenant general in the Ugandan army. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the business arm of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He was appointed to that position in April 2015. He concurrently serves as the managing director of Luweero Defence Industries Limited, the small-arms manufacturer owned by the UPDF. He has served in that capacity since 2011. From 2008 until 2011, at the rank of brigadier, he served as the director general of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, a division of the UPDF. Before that, he served as the commanding officer of the UPDF Armored Brigade, based in Masaka.

Lieutenant General John Mugume is a senior Ugandan military officer. He currently serves as the General Manager of Defence Forces Shop Limited, the duty-free commissary of the UPDF.

Peter Elwelu is a Lieutenant General in the Ugandan military, known formally as the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position on 24 June 2021 Since 9 January 2017, he has served as the commander of land forces, which is the fourth-highest position in the UPDF hierarchy. Prior to that, from June 2013 until January 2017, he was the commander of the UPDF 2nd division, based in Mbarara, the largest town in Uganda's Western Region. Elwelu is most known for the Kasese massacre in which according to Human Rights Watch 153 people, including children, were killed. "They deserved to die" he told the Observer in May 2021.

Colonel Edith Nakalema, is a Ugandan military officer, who graduated in August 2018 from the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, in Watchfield, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, where she had been admitted in 2017.

Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, effective 26 October 2021. Before that, he was the Commander of the Uganda Contingent in Somalia as part of AMISOM.

Paul L'Okech, was a senior military officer at the rank of Lieutenant General, in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), who was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force on 16 December 2020. Between November 2017 and December 2019, he served on special assignment "to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan".

Major General Abel Kandiho, is a Ugandan military officer. He serves as the Joint Chief of Staff in the Uganda Police Force, effective 9 February 2022.
