Liam Charles (born 28 August 1997) [1] is a British baker, television presenter and contestant from Series 8 of The Great British Bake Off . [2] He is currently a presenter on Bake Off: The Professionals and a judge on Junior Bake Off .

Charles was a student at Goldsmiths University in London, where he studied Drama and Theatre Arts. [2]

Career

Television

Charles first came to public attention as a contestant in The Great British Bake Off in 2017, being knocked out in the 8th week. [3] He came fifth in the competition. [4]

In 2018, he was chosen to co-present Bake Off: The Professionals with comedian Tom Allen. In November 2018, he also presented the baking programme Liam Bakes on Channel 4. In November 2019 Charles and Prue Leith were the new judges for Junior Bake Off after a two-year absence. Harry Hill was the presenter. [5] [6] [7]

In October 2022, Charles appeared in the second UK series of The Masked Dancer . He was revealed to be the character "Candlestick" in the sixth episode.

Writing

He has written two cookbooks, Cheeky Treats: 70 Brilliant Bakes and Cakes, which was released on 12 July 2018, [8] and Second Helpings released 19 September 2019. He also writes a column on baking for The Guardian . [9]

Platinum Pudding Competition

In January 2022, it was announced that Charles would serve as a judge for The Platinum Pudding Competition, a nationwide baking competition, with the support of Buckingham Palace, Fortnum & Mason, and The Big Jubilee Lunch. Its purpose was to discover a new pudding recipe dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II as part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne on February 6, 1952. <i>The Great British Bake Off</i> (series 1) First series of The Great British Bake Off

The first series of The Great British Bake Off first aired on BBC Two on 17 August 2010. Ten home bakers took part in a bake-off to test their baking skills as they battled to be designated the best amateur baker. Each week the programme bakers participated in three challenges in a particular discipline, with some being eliminated at the end of each episode. The rounds of the competition took place in various locations across the UK following a theme, for example, the episode on puddings took place in Bakewell, bread baking would take place near Sandwich. This first series had a voiceover by Stephen Noonan; for the subsequent series this role was taken by the on-screen presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. The competition was won by Edd Kimber.

The third series of The Great British Bake Off began airing on Tuesday 14 August 2012. The series was filmed at Harptree Court in East Harptree, Somerset.

Bake Off: The Professionals is a British television baking competition featuring teams of professional pastry chefs pitted against one another over two challenges. It is a spin-off from The Great British Bake Off, and its first episode was screened on BBC Two on 29 March 2016. The eight-episode first series of the programme was presented by Tom Kerridge, with Benoit Blin, Cherish Finden and Claire Clark serving as judges. The second series was presented by Angus Deayton, and Claire Clark did not return as a judge. The third series moved to Channel 4 to join The Great British Bake Off after the BBC declined to renew the series. The Channel 4 series has been renamed Bake Off: The Professionals, and was originally presented by comedian Tom Allen and former GBBO competitor Liam Charles. Currently it is presented by Charles and comedian Ellie Taylor.
