The 1978–79 season was the 7th season of Mersin İdmanyurdu (MİY) football team in Second League, the second level division in Turkey. They finished 6th in the Red Group.

Mersin İdmanyurdu Sports Club; located in Mersin, east Mediterranean coast of Turkey in 1962–63. Mersin İdmanyurdu (MİY) football team became Turkey Amateur Champions in 1963. Previous to the 1962–63 season the team had shown an increasing performance. The team's main aim was to be included in the national league. This aim was realized in 1963. When the team became the champions of amateurs in Turkey, the Federation decided to form a second level national division. Next year ÇİY was included in the Second League. Due to sponsorship reasons the team's name was Çukurova İdmanyurdu between 1957 and 1966.

Mersin Talim Yurdu, formerly Mersin İdman Yurdu, is a Turkish sports club from Mersin, Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean Region. The team played in the Turkish first division for 15 seasons, and after the 1983–84 season the football team played in the Turkish second and third divisions. The team was promoted to the Turkish second level division after the 2008–09 season. MİY became the champions of the Turkish second division during the 2010–11 season and earned promotion to the Turkish Süper Lig during the 2011–12 season. Previous ground of the team was 10,125 capacity Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium. In 2013, their new 25,534 person capacity stadium, Mersin Arena, was inaugurated on 23 March 2013 with a TFF First League match against Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor. Their main rivals were Adana Demirspor, Adanaspor and Tarsus İdman Yurdu, and were friendly with Bucaspor.

The Mersin Arena, is a multi-purpose stadium in Mersin, Turkey. Completed in 2013, it was the new home ground for Mersin İdman Yurdu, replacing the old Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2013 Mediterranean Games. The all-seater stadium has the capacity to host 25,534 spectators during football games.

The 2013 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XVII Mediterranean Games and commonly known as Mersin 2013, was an international multi-sport event held from 20 to 30 June 2013 in Mersin, Turkey. Mersin was announced as the host city at the General Assembly of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) on 23 February 2011. Mersin is the second city in Turkey after İzmir to host the Mediterranean Games. All 24 member National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the ICMG participated in the Games. The official programme for the Games is featuring events in 27 different sports.

Football at the 2013 Mediterranean Games took place between 19 and 27 June. The tournament was held at the Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium, and Tarsus City Stadium. There was no women's tournament on this occasion.
