Linda Vollstedt (born November 2, 1946) is the development director for the Arizona Sun Devils since 2001. Before holding her executive position, Vollstedt was the women's golf coach for the Sun Devils from 1980 to 2001. During her tenure as golf coach, she was the winning coach in six NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships during the 1990s. Vollstetdt was named to the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

Early life and education

Vollstedt was born in Portland, Oregon on November 2, 1946. From Arizona State University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969 with an accompanying Master of Science in 1971 and specialized in math. [1]

Career

Vollstedt began her career as a golf player for the Arizona State Sun Devils from 1964 to 1968. Throughout the 1970s, she was a golf coach at the Alhambra High School in Phoenix, Arizona. [2] In 1980, she returned to Arizona State to become the women's golf coach for the university. During her tenure, Vollstedt was the winning coach of the Pac-12 Conference golf championships five times through the 1980s and the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships six times during the 1990s. She remained as the Sun Devils golf coach until her retirement in 2001. [3] After leaving her coaching position, she remained with Arizona State as a development director starting in 2001. [4]

Awards and honors

In 2016, Vollstedt was selected as the Pac-12 Conference Golf Coach of the Century. [5] Vollstedt was inducted into the Women's Golf Coaches Association Coaches Hall of Fame during 1994 and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame during 2003. [6] [7] She was also named to the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Honor in 2018. [8] [9]

Personal life

Vollstedt broke her tibia during a golf accident in 1997 and had a follow-up knee surgery in 2003. [10]

Katherine Burkhart is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and softball coach. She played college softball at Arizona State, and won a national championship with the team in 2008 and was named Most Outstanding Player. Burkhart holds the career records in wins, strikeouts, perfect games, WHIP, innings pitched and strikeout ratio for the school. She also ranks in several career pitching categories and the top-10 for strikeouts and perfect games for both the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA Division I. She has also pitched for the USA Softball team. She also helped remove snakes from a plane that was bound from Hawaii to Phoenix in 2023.

Charli Turner Thorne is a former head coach for the Arizona State Sun Devils women's basketball team and assistant coach for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. She has coached for 28 seasons from 1993 to 2022. She is the winningest Sun Devil coach since the team was established and as of 2019, stood as No. 2 all-time in the Pac-10/Pac-12 for career wins.

The Territorial Cup Series is the yearlong rivalry competition between the University of Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State University Sun Devils (ASU). The series began in 2009 with State Farm as the sponsor until 2012; the universities are seeking new sponsorship. Although without an official sponsor, media outlets and both universities continue to track and promote the series records.

The Arizona State Sun Devils softball team represents Arizona State University in NCAA Division I College softball. The team competes in the Pac-12 Conference, and plays its home games at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Clint Myers, former head coach of the Sun Devils, guided the team to the Women's College World Series in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013. The Sun Devils team won the National Championship in 2008 & 2011.

Lisa Love is an American former volleyball coach and athletic director. She was the athetic director of Arizona State University. At the time, Love was one of only three female athletic directors in a Division I FBS Bowl Equity Conference of the NCAA. Love began her administrative career at USC. Prior to becoming an administrator, Love served as the volleyball head coach at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Southern California, leading her teams to the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament 13 times. In 2005, she was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame.

The 2017–18 Arizona State Sun Devils men's basketball team represented Arizona State University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Sun Devils were led by third-year head coach Bobby Hurley, and played their home games at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona as members of Pac–12 Conference. They finished the season 20–12, 8–10 in Pac-12 play to finish in a tie for eighth place. They lost in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament to Colorado. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the First Four to Syracuse.

Sashel Aitiana Palacios Barajas is an American softball catcher of Mexican descent. After playing college softball for Arizona State, she embarked on a professional career in 2018. She also helped the Mexico national team qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which finished the tournament in fourth place.

Sanja Tomašević is a Serbian-American retired volleyball player and was the head coach of Arizona State women's volleyball team from 2017–2022.

Linda Marie Wells is a former American softball coach. She previously served as the head coach for the Minnesota Golden Gophers softball and Arizona State Sun Devils softball teams.

The 2022–23 Pac-12 Conference women's basketball season will begin with practices in October followed by the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season which will start in November 2022. Conference play will begin in December 2022. This will be the eleventh season under the Pac–12 Conference name and the 37th since the conference first sponsored women's sports, including basketball, in the 1986–87 school year.

The Arizona Wildcats women's golf is considered one of the best in all of women's collegiate golf, dating back to their first season in 1979. Since they have won three national championships in 1996, 2000, and 2018. The Wildcat Women have also had four individual national champions with Susan Slaughter in (1990), Annika Sörenstam in (1991), Marisa Baena in (1996) and Jenna Daniels in (2000).

Taya Hanson is a Canadian college basketball player for the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12 Conference and a member of the Canada women's national basketball team.
