The 6th Asian Winter Games were held in Changchun, Jilin, China from January 28 to February 4, 2007. The Winter Games are a celebration of Winter sports in Asia. This was the second time that China hosted the Asian Winter Games; the first was in Harbin, Heilongjiang in 1996.
The South Asian Games, formerly known as the South Asian Federation Games, is a quadrennial multi-sport event held among the athletes from South Asia. The governing body of these games is South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC), formed in 1983. Currently, the SAOC comprises 7 member countries, namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan participated 4 times in the SAF Games since 2004, but left the SAOC after participating in the 2016th edition and joined CAOC.
Kazakhstan's President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has challenged sports organizers to engage 30 percent of the country's population in sports. The state has numerous sports clubs where people participate in various types of sports; sport facilities are available to the general public. Kazakhstan currently hosts major international tournaments; Astana and Almaty hosted the VII Asian Winter Games 2011, which drew teams from 27 countries.
The Asian Winter Games (AWG) is an international multi-sport event held every four years for members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) which features winter events. The Japanese Olympic Committee first suggested the idea of holding a winter version of the Asian Games in 1982. Their efforts were rewarded when they were finally given hosting rights for the first edition that was held in Sapporo in 1986, as the city had the infrastructure and expertise gained from hosting of the 1972 Winter Olympics.
Ice hockey at the 1996 Asian Winter Games took place in the city of Harbin, China. The spot for the North Korea team, which did not participate, was filled with Kazakhstan's entry into this Winter Asiad. This edition also marks the introduction of women's ice hockey event to the Winter Asian Games.
Figure skating at the 1996 Winter Asian Games took place in the city of Harbin, China with four events contested. This edition of the Winter Asiad marks the return of the sport after a ten-year absence. The previous Asian Winter Games were held in Sapporo, Japan.
Speed skating at the 1996 Winter Asian Games took place in Heilongjiang Indoor Rink Harbin-Nangang in the city of Harbin, China with nine events contested — five for men and four for women. The events were scheduled for February 5– February 9, 1996.
Alpine skiing at the 1996 Winter Asian Games took place in Harbin, China from 5 to 8 February 1996 with four events contested — two each for men and women.
Figure skating was featured as part of the 2007 Asian Winter Games at the Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium in Changchun, China. Events were held from 1 February to 3 February 2007. Skaters competed in four disciplines: men's singles, ladies singles, pairs, and ice dance.
Figure skating has been contested at the Asian Winter Games since 1986. It was not included in 1990 because of conflicting with 1990 World Figure Skating Championships.
Speed skating has been featured as a sport in the Asian Winter Games since the first winter games in 1986.
