The Billboard Hot 100 is a chart that ranks the best-performing singles of the United States. Its data, published by Billboard magazine and compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, is based collectively on each single's weekly physical and digital sales, as well as airplay and streaming.
During 2016, ten singles reached number one on the Hot 100; an eleventh single, "Hello" by Adele, began its run at number one in November 2015. [1] Of those ten number-one singles, five were collaborations. In total, fourteen acts topped the chart as either lead or featured artists, with nine—Zayn, Desiigner, Wizkid, Kyla, Sia, The Chainsmokers, Halsey, Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane—achieving their first Hot 100 number-one single. The Chainsmokers and Halsey's "Closer" was the longest-running number-one of the year, leading the chart for twelve weeks; despite this, Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" topped the Billboard Year-End Hot 100. The Digital Songs or Digital Song Sales chart ranks the best-selling digital songs in the United States, as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and published by Billboard magazine. Although it originally started tracking song sales the week of October 30, 2004, it officially debuted in the issue dated January 22, 2005, and merged all versions of a song sold from digital music distributors. Its data was incorporated in the Hot 100 three weeks later. Since October 2004, digital sales have been incorporated into many of Billboard's music singles charts. The decision was based on the dramatic increase of the digital market while commercial single sales in a physical format were becoming negligible.
The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards were held on Sunday night, August 28, 2016 at 9:00–11:54pm EDT at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. Rihanna received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award after performing several medley numbers during the ceremony. Britney Spears marked her first performance at the awards show since the heavily criticized 2007 show nine years prior. Beyoncé won eight awards to bring her career total of wins to 25 VMAs, overtaking Madonna's previous record of 20 awards, making her the artist with the most wins in the history of the award show.
