Apelsin was an Estonian band created in 1974. Their lyrics are in Estonian and Russian. During the Soviet era, their LP albums were issued by the Soviet music monopoly Melodiya. The Russian name of the band was Апельсин. In both Estonian and Russian, the band's name means orange. Many songs and much of the music of the band are satirical. The band's combining music with humor was one of the reasons the band had become one of the most popular Estonian bands of all time.

At the same time as the events unfold in Estonia, a 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt is taking place in Moscow. Tanks roll through the streets of Estonia, attempting to crush the fledgling democracy and assert Soviet authority. Written and directed by Ilmar Raag for Estonian Television, the film focuses on the role of a newly defiant and independent Estonian media. In spite of a low budget and sometimes wooden acting, the film is seen as an effective, moving portrayal of Estonian independence.

1944 is a 2015 Estonian war drama film directed by Elmo Nüganen. The film first premiered in February 2015 in Berlin, Germany, before its release in Estonia and other Northern European countries. O2 is a 2020 Estonian-Latvian-Lithuanian-Finnish historical spy thriller film, directed by Margus Paju, starring Sampo Sarkala, Kaspars Znotiņš, Elmo Nüganen, Rein Oja and Tambet Tuisk. The film is about the Estonian intelligence officer Feliks Kangur tried to find out a traitor in the secret service in 1939, on the eve of Estonia losing its independence. The film was written by Tom Abrams, Tiit Aleksejev, Eriikka Etholén-Paju and Olle Mirme.
