The first Summer Olympic Games was held in 1896 in Athens, but women competed for the first time in next games in 1900 in Paris. [1] An Egyptian woman was scheduled to compete for the first time in the 1972 Summer Olympics, but the Munich massacre during that Games led to the departure of Egypt's delegation before the she could compete. [2] [3] The Egyptian woman made her first appearance in 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, 88 years after the first tournament, [4] to become the fourth Arab woman to take part in the Olympics after Algeria, Libya, and Syria. [5] Since then, the Egyptian women have taken part in every Summer Olympic Games. [4]

The number of female Egyptian Olympic participants varied from their first appearance in 1984 Summer Olympics which witnessed the participant of 6 women, which was the highest (6 Sportswoman) till 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney (15 sportswoman)، [6] Since then, number of participants increased on each tournament until it reached 37 women in 2016 Summer Olympics [7] Same for sports, [4] number of various sports that Egyptian women participated in one tournament was the maximum in first appear in 1984 Summer Olympics (4 sports) [8] till 2000 tournament when it increased to 9, [6] and it kept increasing till 2016 games (18 Sport). [4] [7]

Egypt didn't have any female Olympic medalist for 120 years. [4] On 10 August 2016, the Egyptian weightlifter Sara Ahmed became the first Egyptian female medalist [9] by winning the bronze medal in weightlifting 69 kg event by lifting total of 255 kg, she was also the first Arabian woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting. [9]

Egypt at the 2012 Summer Olympics Egypts performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics

Egypt competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012, sending one of its largest delegations ever. A total of 110 Egyptian athletes participated in 83 events across 20 sports, with more women taking part than ever before. The nation's flagbearer in the opening ceremonies was Hesham Mesbah, a judoka who was Egypt's only medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Egypt won two medals during the course of the Games: Alaaeldin Abouelkassem earned silver in the men's foil, becoming the first competitor from an African nation to win a fencing medal, while Karam Gaber captured silver in the men's 84 kg Greco-Roman wrestling event. Two Egyptian weightlifters were awarded medals retroactively, after higher-ranked competitors were disqualified for doping: Abeer Abdelrahman took silver in the women's 75 kg event, while Tarek Yehia, received bronze in the men's 85 kg event. Among other achievements, Mostafa Mansour was the nation's first competitor in sprint canoeing while fencer Shaimaa El-Gammal became the first Egyptian female to appear in four editions of the Olympics.

United Arab Emirates at the 2012 Summer Olympics Sporting event delegation

The United Arab Emirates participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, which were held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at the London Olympics marked its eighth appearance in the Summer Olympic Games since its début at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The delegation sent by the United Arab Emirates National Olympic Committee consisted of 26 athletes in six different sports: athletics, association football, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting. Two of the 26 athletes were women, which included the first Emirati Olympic weightlifter, Khadija Mohammed. The nation also made its Olympic debut in association football with its national under-23 team. None of the athletes won any medals at the Games, with the best result being a ninth-place finish for Khadija Mohammad in the women's heavyweight weightlifting event.

Shaimaa El-Gammal is an Egyptian fencer. She competed in the women's foil events at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Dalia Muhammad Ahmad El-Gebaly is an Egyptian synchronized swimmer who competed in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Eman El Gammal is an Egyptian fencer. At the 2008 Olympics, she competed both as an individual and in the Egyptian team, losing in the first round to the Netherlands' Indra Angad-Gaur and the team lost in the first round to Russia. At the 2012 Summer Olympics she competed in the Women's foil, and was defeated 9-15 in the first round. The Egyptian women's team that she was part of also lost in the first round.

Ahmed Mohamed Saad is an Egyptian weightlifter. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Men's 62 kg, finishing 9th.

Ahmed El-Nemr is an Egyptian archer. He competed in the individual event at the London 2012 Summer Olympics and the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Shaimaa Abdul-Aziz Muhammad is an Egyptian table tennis player. She won a silver medal, along with her partner Moselhi Emad, in the mixed doubles at the 2007 All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria. As of March 2013, Abdul-Aziz is ranked no. 566 in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). She is also right-handed, and uses the classic grip.

Born in the Netherlands, El Zeiny trained all of her gymnastics career in the Netherlands, but she competed for her mother's homeland Egypt in numerous international tournaments since 2007, including three editions of the Summer Olympics.

Sara Samir Elsayed Mohamed Ahmed is an Egyptian weightlifter who won a bronze medal in the women's 69 kg event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Originally from the Ismailia Governorate, Ahmed was encouraged to take part in weightlifting by her family and was competing internationally by 2012. At the senior level, she has earned gold medals at the Mediterranean and African Games, as well as the Arab Championships. In Rio, she became the first Arab woman to receive an Olympic weightlifting medal and the first Egyptian woman to receive an Olympic medal on the podium in any discipline.

Shaimaa Ahmed Khalaf Haridy is an Egyptian weightlifter, competing in the +75 kg category and representing Egypt at international competitions. She competed at world championships, including at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she competed in the Women's +75 kg.

Ahmed El-Attar is an Egyptian handball player. He competed for Egypt's national team at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.
