A number of notable individuals, including presidents, ministers, and parliamentarians have graduated from the college.

The Scholarship Examination is a highly competitive Sri Lankan examination first introduced in 1947, conducted by the Department of Examinations of the Ministry of Education. It is optional for students to undertake it during the final year of primary school. Based on the results of the exam, students could transfer to prominent national schools. The exams are held in two mediums: Sinhala and Tamil.

Wanniaarachchige Don David Victor Jayamanne, MBE, popularly known as Eddie Jayamanne was a popular Sri Lankan comedian and actor of early Sri Lankan cinema.

Hettiarachchige Emanuel Aloysius Rodrigo, better known as Prem Jayanth, was an actor in Sri Lankan cinema as well as a producer and art director. Considered as the first male superstar in Sinhala cinema, Jayanth rose to prominence with starring roles in the popular films Sujatha (1953) and Seda Sulang (1955).

Vidyartha College is an all-male national school located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The college was founded in 1942 by the Vidyartha Society, and is currently run by the Government of Sri Lanka. The college has two sections: the primary section which includes grades 1–5; and the secondary section which includes students in grades 6–13.

Prof. S. B. S. Abayakoon is the current chairman of Engineering council Sri Lanka(ECSL), Governor of the central province and the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Prior to that, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for four and a half years. He is a Senior professor of Civil Engineering, at Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. He was appointed the 20th vice-chancellor of the university in August 2009. He completed his primary and secondary education at St/Sylvester's College, Kandy.

St. Mary's College is a multi-faith school located in Kegalle, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. Established in 1867, it is the oldest boys' school in the city. In 2023 it had approximately 3,000 students and 135 teaching staff.

Hemal Gunasekara is a Sri Lankan politician educated at St Sylvester's College, Kandy and a current Member of Parliament for Matara District.

Reverend Robert William Ryde was an English clergyman and member of the Church Missionary Society (CMS). He was Principal of Trinity College, Kandy, Sri Lanka and St. John's College, Jaffna. The Ryde Gold Medal, awarded in Trinity College to the best all round boy, and the highest honour that the School can bestow, is named after Rev. Ryde.

Tikiri Banda Kobbekaduwa is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the 8th Governor of Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka from 21 November 2019 to 10 June 2023. He previously served as 8th Governor of the Central Province of Sri Lanka from 16 December 2005 to 19 January 2015. He was the chief organiser of Sri Lanka Freedom Party to the Yatinuwara Electoral. He is the nephew of former Agriculture Minister Hector Kobbekaduwa.

Polwatte Samaraweera Aratchilage Percy Samaraweera was a Sri Lankan politician who belonged to the United National Party. He was educated at St John's College Panadura and St Sylvester's College, Kandy. He was the first Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from 16 September 1988 to 6 June 1998 after which the council was dissolved and elections were held only in 1999. He was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 1965 and 1977 from Welimada electorate.

Sir Bennet Soysa, CBE was a Ceylonese politician and philanthropist. He was a member of the 2nd State Council of Ceylon and the Senate of Ceylon. He was also Mayor of Kandy on five occasions and dedicated his wealth for the propagation of Buddhism.

Dr Prasanna Gunasena is a consultant neurosurgeon attached to Lanka Hospitals in Sri Lanka. He is also the Chairman of State Pharmaceutical Company (SPC) of Sri Lanka.

Jayampathy Wickramaratne, PC is a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was a national list member representing the United National Party in the Parliament. A former director of Programs of the Institute of Constitutional Studies in Colombo, he has served as a Senior Adviser to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and was a member of the Sri Lankan Law Commission. He entered parliament in 2015 General Election from the National List of the United National Party. He was also appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe. Wickramaratne the key person behind the proposed 2018 constitution of Sri Lanka.

M. Velu Kumar is a Sri Lankan politician, former provincial minister and Member of Parliament.

Chandani Seneviratne,, is an actress in Sri Lankan cinema, theatre and television. One of the most distinguished artists in Sinhala cinema, Seneviratne has received critical acclaim and awards at every award festival in Sri Lanka for several dramatic roles.

Morris Denzil Bernard 'Barney' Wijesinghe,, popularly known as Morris Wijesinghe, was a Sri Lankan musician and playback singer. One of the popular pop artists in 1980s of Sri Lankan music with a career spanning more than four decades, Wijesinghe has sung several popular songs including Doowillen Wathsunu Thawara, Nil Ahas Thale Aage, Oba Enna and Peradiga Ahase.
