In Tajikistan, since the 1939 Soviet census, its small Pamiri and Yaghnobi ethnic groups are included as Tajiks. In China, the term is used to refer to its Pamiri ethnic groups, the Tajiks of Xinjiang, who speak the Eastern Iranian Pamiri languages. In Afghanistan, the Pamiris are counted as a separate ethnic group.

The President of Tajikistan, Emomalii Rahmon, personally oversees TALCO and according to The Economist, "Each year, TALCO produces hundreds of millions of dollars in profits that are routed to a shell company in the British Virgin Islands". According to a leaked cable written by the US ambassador in Tajikistan, this shell company is controlled by Emomali Rahmon.

The university is a member of the Euroasian Universities Association (EUA).
