The American Legion, commonly known as the Legion, is an organization of U.S. war veterans headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. It comprises state, U.S. territory, and overseas departments, in turn made up of local posts. It was established in March 1919 in Paris, France, by officers and men of the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.). It was subsequently chartered by the 66th U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919.

Leo Laporte is the former host of The Tech Guy weekly radio show and founder of TWiT.tv, an Internet podcast network focusing on technology. The American Legion was a provincial cavalry and infantry corps (regiment) of the British Army in the American War of Independence commanded by Brigadier General Benedict Arnold.
The 18th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery, also known as Lilly's Hoosier Battery and Lilly's Battery, was a civil war regiment formed in Indiana during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed at the end of 1860 by 22-year-old Eli Lilly, an Indianapolis pharmacist. He had recruitment posters placed around the city and recruited primarily among his friends and classmates. The unit were first issued 6 "Rodman Guns" and was manned by 156 men. The Battery members stated preference to 3" Ordnance Rifles over the 10 pound Parrott Rifle due to its tendency to bursting. The unit mustered in Indianapolis where it was drilled during 1861, excelling at their skill with firing accuracy. Lilly was elected captain of the unit in August 1862 when the unit was deployed to join the Lightning Brigade commanded by Col. John T. Wilder.
Cottage Hill is a location in Posey Township, Clay County, Indiana. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement was home to the Van Buren, Indiana post office for a brief period in the 1830s. The site hosted Cunningham's Tavern in the first half of the 19th century, when the National Road carried much of the traffic between Terre Haute and Indianapolis. The tavern was reportedly a stopping point for the likes of Henry Clay, Martin Van Buren, and Abraham Lincoln. The location also hosted a training racetrack for horses. The Cottage Hill Cemetery, opened 1876, was a stop on the Brazil, Indiana street railway in the 1890s, and some successor lines.

Milton J. Foreman (1863–1935) was a Lieutenant General, who served as Commander in Chief of the Illinois National Guard. Prior to that, he led the 33rd Division, Illinois National Guard. Foreman attended the Paris Caucuses in 1919 of the American Legion as the Illinois representative and was one of its early leaders. He was also active in Illinois politics and served as a Chicago alderman.
