It consists of the Governor appointed by the President of India as the head of the state, currently Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The head of government is the Chief Minister, currently Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is the leader of the group that commands a majority in the unicameral Assam Legislative Assembly. The Assam Assembly is elected by universal adult suffrage for a period of five years. The Chief Minister is assisted by a Council of Ministers that he nominates, the size of which is restricted.

The speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly is the presiding officer of the Northern Ireland Assembly, elected on a cross-community vote by the Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The office of Speaker is currently held by the MLA for Belfast South Edwin Poots of the Democratic Unionist Party.

Bhumidhar Barman was an Indian Politician belonging to the Indian National Congress. He was the shortest-serving Chief Minister of Assam, with a short period of twenty two days from 22 April 1996 to 14 May 1996. He was a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly being elected 7 times. He was first elected in 1967. In 2015, he was made a Cabinet Minister of Assam.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass is an Indian politician and journalist from Assam serving as the Minister of Panchahyat and Rural Development, Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Government of Assam in the Himanta Biswa Sarma ministry since 2021. He is a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party representing Patacharkuchi since 2021 and Sorbhog from 2011 to 2021. He was elected as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2017. He became a member of the BJP in 1992. From 2011 to 2016, he was the deputy leader of the BJP in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He served as BJP Assam state unit president from 2016 to 2021.

Renupoma Rajkhowa is an Asom Gana Parishad politician from Assam, India. She is a four time MLA from Teok Assembly constituency.

Sheikh Chand Mohammad was an Indian lawyer and politician belonging to Indian National Congress. He was elected twice as a member of Assam Legislative Assembly. He was the speaker and deputy speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly too.

Golok Chandra Rajbanshi was an Indian politician from the state of Assam who served as Leader of the Opposition of Assam Legislative Assembly. He also served as deputy speaker of the assembly from 1972 to 1978 and was a member of Assam Legislative Assembly once for Balipara and four times for Rangapara. He was also a cabinet minister four times throughout his political career.
