Little Ball Lake is a small lake in Cassiar Land District of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. [1] It lies at the head of the Little Iskut River just south of Kounugu Mountain at the southeastern end of the Spectrum Range in Mount Edziza Provincial Park. [1] [2] The lake contains one island and Ball Creek flows in its vicinity. [2]

Little Ball Lake was referred to as Kounugu Lake by Canadian volcanologist Jack Souther who studied the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in detail for many years. [3] [4] Kounugu was the guardian of fresh water in Tahltan folklore "who slept throughout the day on top of the well that contained his treasure". [5]

Little Ball Lake is one of several lakes that are large enough to be used by float-equipped aircraft to gain access to Mount Edziza Provincial Park. [5] [6] However, landing on the lake with a private aircraft requires a letter of authorization from the BC Parks Stikine Senior Park Ranger. [6]

Little Ball Lake's mean annual discharge is estimated at 0.135 m3/s (4.8 cu ft/s). Its watershed covers 3.79 km2 (1.46 sq mi) which is entirely within Mount Edziza Provincial Park. The watershed drains parts of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex. The watershed's land cover is classified as 43% barren, 25.4% herbaceous, 20.4% shrubland, 10.1% water, 0.7% snow/glacier and 0.5% conifer forest. [7]

Mount Edziza, sometimes called Edziza Mountain or Edziza Peak, is a stratovolcano in Cassiar Land District of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the Big Raven Plateau of the Tahltan Highland which extends along the western side of the Stikine Plateau. The mountain has an elevation of 2,786 metres, making it the highest volcano of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex. However, it had an elevation of at least 3,396 metres before its original summit was likely destroyed by a violent, climactic eruption in the geologic past; its current flat summit contains an ice-filled, 2-kilometre (1.2-mile) in diameter crater. Mount Edziza contains several lava domes, cinder cones and lava fields on its flanks, as well as an ice cap that is characterized by several outlet glaciers stretching out to lower altitudes. All sides of the mountain are drained by tributaries of Mess Creek and Kakiddi Creek which are situated within the Stikine River watershed.

The Spectrum Range, formerly gazetted as the Spectrum Mountains and the Rainbow Mountains, is a small mountain range in Cassiar Land District of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Located at the southern end of the Tahltan Highland, it borders the Skeena Mountains in the east and the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains in the west. The Spectrum Range is surrounded by the Arctic Lake Plateau in the southwest and the Kitsu Plateau in the northwest, both of which contain volcanic features such as cinder cones. It lies at the southern end of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex which includes the two neighbouring plateaus as well as Mount Edziza and the Big Raven Plateau to the north. The mountain range is drained on all sides by streams within the Stikine River watershed and, unlike Mount Edziza to the north, contains relatively small separate glaciers. Mount Edziza Provincial Park is the main protected area surrounding the Spectrum Range.

Walkout Creek is a tributary of Raspberry Creek, which in turn is a tributary of Mess Creek, part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally west for roughly 12 km (7.5 mi) to join Raspberry Creek about 5 km (3.1 mi) east-southeast of Raspberry Creek's confluence with Mess Creek. Walkout Creek's watershed covers 80.9 km2 (31.2 sq mi) and its mean annual discharge is estimated at 2.26 m3/s (80 cu ft/s). The mouth of Walkout Creek is located about 44 km (27 mi) southeast of Telegraph Creek, about 38 km (24 mi) southwest of Iskut and about 108 km (67 mi) south-southwest of Dease Lake. Walkout Creek's watershed's land cover is classified as 34.2% barren, 25.1% shrubland, 21.5% herbaceous, 17.7% conifer forest, and small amounts of other cover.

The Mount Edziza volcanic complex is a group of volcanoes and associated lava flows in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Located on the Tahltan Highland, it is 40 kilometres southeast of Telegraph Creek and 85 kilometres southwest of Dease Lake. The complex encompasses a broad, steep-sided lava plateau that extends over 1,000 square kilometres. Its highest summit is 2,786 metres in elevation, making the MEVC the highest of four large complexes in an extensive north–south trending volcanic region. It is obscured by an ice cap characterized by several outlet glaciers that stretch out to lower altitudes.

Mess Creek, formerly known as Mestua, is a tributary of the Stikine River in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It flows north and northwest for about 110 km (68 mi), through a lake and a gorge to join the Stikine River, which in turn flows southwest across the Canada–United States border into Alaska where it empties into various straits of the Inside Passage. The northern half of Mess Creek forms a western boundary of Mount Edziza Provincial Park which lies within the traditional territory of the Tahltan people.

The Little Iskut River is a tributary of the Iskut River in the northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada, in Cassiar Land District. From its source at Little Ball Lake in Mount Edziza Provincial Park, the Little Iskut River flows about 45 km (28 mi), generally north to the vicinity of Mowdale Lake, then southeast and south to the Iskut River just below Cascade Falls. The Little Iskut River is part of the Stikine River drainage basin, as the Iskut River is a major tributary of the Stikine.

Sezill Creek is a tributary of Taweh Creek, which in turn is a tributary of Mess Creek, part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. Kakiddi Creek forms the northeastern boundary of Mount Edziza Provincial Park which lies within the traditional territory of the Tahltan people.

Kadeya Creek is a tributary of Elwyn Creek, which in turn is a tributary of Mess Creek, part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally northwest for roughly 17 km (11 mi) to join Elwyn Creek about 8 km (5.0 mi) east of Elwyn Creek's confluence with Mess Creek. Kadeya Creek's watershed covers 59 km2 (23 sq mi) and its estimated mean annual discharge is 1.22 m3/s (43 cu ft/s). The mouth of Kadeya Creek is located about 21 km (13 mi) southeast of Telegraph Creek, about 52 km (32 mi) west of Iskut and about 87 km (54 mi) southwest of Dease Lake. Kadeya Creek's watershed's land cover is classified as 48.8% shrubland, 18.2% conifer forest, 11.7% barren, 10.9% herbaceous, 8.8% snow/glacier, and small amounts of other cover.

Tenchen Creek is a tributary of Kakiddi Creek, which in turn is a tributary of the Klastline River, part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally flows northeast for about 8 km (5.0 mi) to join Kakiddi Creek about 13 km (8.1 mi) south of Kakiddi Creek's confluence with the Klastline River. Tenchen is a combination of the Tahltan words "ten" and "chen", which mean "ice" and "dirty" respectively.

Stewbomb Creek is a tributary of the Little Iskut River and part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally southeast for roughly 14 km (8.7 mi) to join the Little Iskut River, which flows into the Iskut River, the largest tributary of the Stikine River.

Tsecha Creek is a tributary of Kakiddi Creek, which in turn is a tributary of the Klastline River, part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally west for about 16 km (9.9 mi) to join Kakiddi Creek about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Kakiddi Creek's confluence with the Klastline River. Tsecha Creek's watershed's land cover is classified as 47.8% barren, 27.5% conifer forest, 13.1% shrubland, 10.3% snow/glacier, and small amounts of other cover.

Gerlib Creek is a tributary of Bourgeaux Creek and part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally east and south for roughly 10.5 km (6.5 mi) to join the Bourgeaux Creek, a tributary of the Little Iskut River, which in turn is a tributary of the Iskut River, the largest tributary of the Stikine River.

Nagha Creek is a tributary of Kitsu Creek and part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It flows generally northwest and north for roughly 15 km (9.3 mi) to join Kitsu Creek, a tributary of Mess Creek, which in turn is a tributary of the Stikine River.

Ball Creek is a tributary of the Iskut River and part of the Stikine River watershed in northwest part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. From its source in the mountains south of Mount Edziza, near Yeda Peak, it flows generally southeast and east for roughly 41 km (25 mi) to empty into the Iskut River, the largest tributary of the Stikine River.

Artifact Ridge is a mountain ridge extending southeast from the eastern side of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is bounded on the north by Bourgeaux Creek valley, on the south by Artifact Creek valley, on the east by the Little Iskut River valley and on the west by the Kitsu Plateau. The ridge is at the southeastern end of Mount Edziza Provincial Park and gets its name from the knapping of obsidian tools and points by early Tahltan hunters. Destell Pass cuts north–south through the westernmost end of Artifact Ridge.

Yagi Ridge is a mountain ridge extending northwest from the middle of the Spectrum Range at the southern end of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is bounded on the north by Nagha Glacier and Nagha Creek valley, on the south by Yeda Creek on the Arctic Lake Plateau and on the west by Mess Creek valley. Yagi Ridge reaches an elevation of 2,243 metres at the head of Nagha Glacier where its eastern end adjoins to the Spectrum Range just northwest of Yeda Peak.

Kounugu Mountain is a mountain in the Spectrum Range at the southern end of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is southeast of Yeda Peak, west and northwest of the Little Iskut River, south of Stewbomb Creek valley and just north of Little Ball Lake. It has an elevation of 2,267 metres and lies at the southeastern end of the Spectrum Range. The mountain is also at the southeastern end of Mount Edziza Provincial Park which is southeast of the community of Telegraph Creek.

Kuno Peak is a mountain peak in the Spectrum Range at the southern end of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is south of Yagi Ridge, west of Yeda Peak, southeast of Outcast Hill, east of Exile Hill, northeast of Tadekho Hill and north of Little Arctic Lake, the latter four of which are on the northern end of the Arctic Lake Plateau. It has an elevation of 2,183 metres and lies at the southwestern end of the Spectrum Range. Tadekho Creek originates from the southern flank of the ridge connecting Kuno Peak with Yeda Peak.
