Live at SO36 is the 6th live album of the German pop singer Nena. It comprises the recording of most of her concert performed at the SO36 club in Berlin on 4 March 2015 and was released exactly one year later on 4 March 2016. [1]
Nena's association with the SO36 club goes back to the early 1980s when she lived in Berlin prior to becoming famous. In her 2005 memoirs "Willst du mit mir gehn", she describes it as being one of the three main places where she spent her weekends. [2]
The sold-out concert on 4 March 2015 was part of a "clubtour" of smaller venues for audiences of 500 to 700 people aimed at promoting Nena's album Oldschool which had been released the previous month. [3] Extracts of the video from the second single released from Oldschool, "Berufsjugendlich", had also been filmed at SO36. [4] Live at SO36 reflects this with 11 of its 21 tracks being from Oldschool, the remainder being mainly Nena's most well known songs from the 1970s and 1980s and only one track ("Willst du mit mir gehn") from the intervening quarter of a century. Six tracks performed at the concert (including the other 5 tracks from Oldschool) were not included in the album.
Live at SO36 was made "CD of the week" by Alster Radio [5] but was negatively received by the music review website 'Laut.de' which gave it 2 out of 5 stars. Describing Nena concerts in the 21st century as, "nothing more than nostalgia trips", and referring to her, "unabated artistic decline continuing", Michael Schuh wrote of the enthusiastic audience, "It's like staring at the home shopping channel QVC, when you always ask yourself, 'How can they fall for this?'" [6]
A more positive review in 'Leute.de' concludes that the album "is a fascinating live document ... that demonstrates the many facets of the NDW icon who stylistically oscillates here between pop, rock, indie and electro and who, with her outstanding live qualities, knows how to pamper in an intimate setting". [7]
The SO36 concert on 4 March 2015 received generally positive reviews from local media at the time but the reception to the album a year later was more mixed.
For the Berliner Zeitung, Aleksandar Zivanovic wrote, "When it comes to not getting older, even Madonna can only look up to Nena... She jumps from left to right, her songs much better live than in any disco. The band play very precisely, Nena matches it and the audience have a good time, some cuddling, some already knowing the lyrics of her new songs." [8]
Similarly Frank Thiessies for BZ referred to a "performance combining majesty and grass-roots" and "Nena's winning girlish personality". He went on to describe how, "The stage set shines in old Musikladen TV appearance, the eighties are more present than ever and suddenly SO36 is also again anchored in West Berlin." [9]
Another positive review by Peter E Müller appeared in Morgenpost.de. "On Wednesday night, the eternal princess of the Neue Deutsche Welle came on stage with her musicians at a packed SO36 in Kreuzberg. And was euphorically celebrated." Müller found one fault as he described how, "Nena enjoys every minute, is driven by an over-excited restlessness, only making a mess – with a smile – of one verse of a new song." [10]
Another favourable article was published by Der Tagesspiegel under the strapline, "whoever doesn't sing along has no voice". Esther Kogelboom wrote that, "The hall shakes with breathless emotion as, for the first time, Nena sings "Bruder", a song about the death of her first son Christopher, who died at eleven months... Scary how Nena recites its lines without choking. You wait for a stumble, a pause. There's no deviation, but a seamless transition to "Wunder gescheh'n", perhaps to avoid a reaction from the audience." [11]
Live at SO36 entered and peaked at number 43 in the German charts, [12] the second highest position achieved by Nena's six live albums. [13] One of its tracks, "Genau jetzt (live)", was one of five versions of the song included on the EP which in April 2016 returned Nena to the German Top 30 singles chart for the first time in 6 years. Gabriele Susanne Kerner, better known as Nena, is a German singer-songwriter, actress, and comedian who rose to international fame in 1983 as the eponymous lead vocalist of the band Nena with the Neue Deutsche Welle song "99 Luftballons". In the same year the band re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena's re-recording of some of the band's old hit songs as a solo artist, produced by the co-composer of most of them, her former Nena band colleague and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, rekindled her solo career in 2002. Combined with the success of the Nena band years, she has sold over 25 million records, making her one of Germany's most successful music artists.
Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen is a keyboard player, producer and composer. He became well-known as the keyboardist of the band Nena in the 1980s, co-writing their world famous hit "99 Luftballons".
Rosenstolz was a German pop duo from Berlin that was active between 1991 and 2012 and had chart hits in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The duo consisted of singer AnNa R. and musician Peter Plate, who occasionally provided vocals. Rosenstolz achieved major chart success after the nineties, with five studio albums going to No. 1 in the German albums chart. Although the duo split up to pursue separate music careers, they left open the possibility of a future reunion.
Nena feat. Nena, also known as 20 Jahre – Das Jubiläums-Album is a studio album by German pop singer Nena. It contains new versions of her hits, some of them are duets with other singers, including Kim Wilde, Joachim Witt and Udo Lindenberg. The album was first released in 2002 with a red cover and reissued with a blue cover in 2003. Both releases exist in either standard or limited edition, the latter being supplemented with a bonus CD of live tracks. The songs on the bonus CD are also reworked, suggesting that Nena may have planned to update more of her back-catalogue, although there have been no further releases in this vein.
Chokmah is a studio album of German pop singer Nena, released in 2001. It received mixed reviews, the majority being positive. It spawned one successful single, "Carpe diem", and foreshadowed the comeback Nena achieved with her next album, Nena feat. Nena.
Wunder gescheh'n is the first solo album by German pop singer Nena. It was released in November 1989, two years after the demise of her band in fall 1987. The title track, "Du bist überall" and "Im Rausch der Liebe" were released as singles and had moderate success.

Und alles dreht sich is a studio album by German pop singer Nena, released in 1994. It had moderate success in Germany. "Hol' mich zurück", "Viel zuviel Glück" and "Ich halt' dich fest" were released as singles.
Jamma nich is a studio album by German pop singer Nena. The title is a colloquial rendering of the German injunction jammere nicht!. Nena wrote the album with Annette Humpe, who also co-produced, and Luci van Org (Lucilectric). Their involvement may explain the "synth pop tendency" that makes it "a unique kind of semideparture in her catalog". By the time Jamma nich was released, Nena was pregnant with her fifth and final child but continued a full round of TV and promotional appearances in support of the various singles released from the album until late into her pregnancy. The first official single was "Ganz gelassen", which at one point was called "Riesenarschloch", a swear word included in the lyrics. The second single released was "Alles was du willst"; there were also promotional singles "Jamma nich" and "Auf dich und mich". The album enjoyed moderate success, peaking at No. 29 in Germany.
Willst du mit mir gehn is a studio album by German pop singer Nena, released in 2005. It's a two-CD set, with the first CD recorded in studio and the second in jam sessions on Majorca. The album reached No. 2 in Germany, while the single "Liebe ist" reached No. 1. The other singles were title track and "Lass mich".
Made In Germany Live is a two-CD live album by German pop singer Nena, released on 17 September 2010. It contains her live performance at Berlin on 24 April 2010, with bonus tracks from concert dates in 2009 and 2010 on the special edition of the album. The bonus tracks include two songs by Nena’s first band, The Stripes. Of the 27 tracks featured in the album, 11 were from the “Made in Germany” album which the concert tour was promoting. Of the remaining 16, ten are songs from the 1980s and six from the 2000s, leaving Nena’s work from the 1990s completely unrepresented.
"Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann" is a 1984 song by Nena which was a commercial success in Europe. Released initially as single, it's been also included on Nena's 1985 album Feuer und Flamme. Due to the success, many cover versions of this song appeared, including samples as well as other languages. "Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime" is an English-language variant of the song. In its various incarnations it has been Nena's second most successful song of all-time behind only "99 Luftballons". Both songs were written by Nena band members Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges and between them have had in the 21st century a near duopoly of being the final rock song that Nena plays at the end of her live concerts.

Du bist gut(“You’re Good”) is a studio album by German pop singer Nena. The album was recorded in Iceland and released on 2 November 2012 by The Laugh and Peas Company, the record label run by Nena and her partner Philipp Palm. The cover artwork is designed by Nena's daughter Larissa, and her son Sakias duets with her on a couple of tracks. The album peaked at #2 in the German album charts.
Kassengift is the seventh studio album by German pop duo Rosenstolz, released in 2000 by Polydor Records. The album was the first Rosenstolz album to reach No. 1 in the German albums chart and includes "Amo Vitam", a song sung entirely in Latin that reached the top 20 of the German singles chart.
Das große Leben is the tenth studio album by German pop duo Rosenstolz, released in 2006 by Island Records. Consisting mostly of ballads, the album topped the German and Austrian albums charts and became Rosenstolz's biggest selling album, with over one million copies sold. Five singles from the album were top 20 hits in Germany.
Oldschool is a studio album by German pop singer Nena, released on 27 February 2015. Having received some negative publicity at the time of the release of her previous album Du bist gut for refusing in interviews to talk about the 1980s, Nena chose to celebrate the past with her next studio album. The first single released from the album, "Lieder von früher", enthuses about the pleasure of dancing to old records, and the title track happily reflects on Nena's being best known for a few songs from the 1980s. The album was produced by the Hamburg hip-hop artist and rapper Samy Deluxe and features a duet with Nena’s eldest surviving son, Sakias. Although published on Nena's own record label, The Laugh and Peas Company, distribution rights were agreed with Sony Music, 22 years after the company dropped Nena as a recording artist following the indifferent performance of her second solo album Bongo Girl.
"Liebe ist" is a song by German recording artist Nena. It was co-written and produced along by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen for her thirteenth studio album Willst du mit mir gehn (2005). Selected as the album's leading single, it served as the theme song for the Sat.1 telenovela Verliebt in Berlin. Upon its release, it reached the top of the German Singles Chart, becoming Nena's second number-one hit after 1983's "99 Luftballons" and her first chart topper as a solo artist.
