The Lotus Type 62 race car was a development of the successful Type 47 and intended to race in the Appendix J Group 6 Prototype Class. [3] The car was designed by Martin Waide at Lotus Components and had a space frame chassis, and featured the new Lotus 2.0-litre LV240 (Type 904) DOHC engine (the race program helped develop the Type 907 engine, used to power the Lotus Elite, Esprit, Eclat and Excel).

The car had limited competitive success, due mainly to problems with the Vauxhall derived engine block. The car's most successful race was finishing 3rd position at the Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park in 1969.

When Colin Chapman removed all links to Vauxhall in 1973 the engines were replaced with Lotus 906 engines.

The 24 Hours of Daytona, also known as the Rolex 24 At Daytona for sponsorship reasons, is a 24-hour sports car endurance race held annually at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is run on the Sports Car Course layout, a 3.56-mile (5.73 km) combined road course that uses most of the tri-oval plus an infield road course. The Lotus-Radford Type 62-2 or simply Radford Type 62-2 is a sports car produced by British coachbuilding firm Harold Radford in partnership with Lotus Cars. Built as a homage to the original Lotus 62, production will be limited to 62 units. The car is available in three trim levels, "Classic", "Gold Leaf", and "John Player Special", of the 62 planned units twelve will be "John Player Special" trim, another twelve will be the "Gold Leaf" trim. Based on the Lotus Exige, the Type 62-2 shares the chassis and engine, the former of which also has a new rear subframe.
