Lynn R. Goldman (born April 24, 1951) is the Dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. [1] She is an American public health physician, a pediatrician and an epidemiologist.
Goldman was born in Galveston, Texas, United States. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Conservation of Natural Resources from the University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley College of Natural Resources, in 1976 and subsequently obtained an M.Sc. in Health and Medical Science in 1979.
In 1981, she received an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (formerly Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health) and an MD from the University of California in the same year. [1]
In 1993, Goldman was appointed by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the US Senate as Assistant Administrator for Toxic Substances at the US Environmental Protection Agency, becoming the first physician to serve in this capacity. [2] [3] [4] During her five years at the EPA, from 1993 to 1998, she promoted pesticide legislation reform, assessment of industrial-chemical hazards, and children's health issues. [5] [6]
Formerly a professor of environmental health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health she is perhaps best known for her role in helping craft the Food Protection Act passed by Congress in 1996, the first national environmental law to explicitly require measures to protect children from pesticides. [7]
Goldman is frequently asked to advise and testify in matters regarding her areas of expertise. [7] [8] [9] She is also regularly asked to comment on developments in her fields on national media. [4] [10] [11] [12] [13]
Goldman has served on numerous national boards and expert committees including the Committee on Environmental Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control Lead Poisoning Prevention Advisory Committee and the National Research Council. She also serves on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Science Board and has served on different subcommittees. [14] [15] [16] Goldman formerly served as chair of the board of the Children's Environmental Health Network. [17]
She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), and serves on the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). [18] Goldman also serves as a member of the National Academy of Medicine Council and of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2009, Goldman received the 16th Annual Heinz Award with a special focus on global change. [21] She was also recognized as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women in the same year. [22] [23]
Goldman received an honorary doctorate degree from the Swedish Örebro University and has also received different Alumni awards. [24] [25]
In 2016, Goldman received the Walsh McDermott Award for distinguished service to the National Academy of Medicine, recognizing her more than 30-year-history of volunteering. [26]
In 2018, Goldman was nominated as a member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars. [27]
Pesticides are substances that are meant to control pests. This includes herbicide, insecticide, nematicide, molluscicide, piscicide, avicide, rodenticide, bactericide, insect repellent, animal repellent, microbicide, fungicide, and lampricide. The most common of these are herbicides, which account for approximately 50% of all pesticide use globally. Most pesticides are intended to serve as plant protection products, which in general, protect plants from weeds, fungi, or insects. As an example, the fungus Alternaria solani is used to combat the aquatic weed Salvinia.
Daminozide—also known as aminozide, Alar, Kylar, SADH, B-995, B-nine, and DMASA,—is a plant growth regulator, a chemical sprayed on fruit to regulate growth, make harvest easier, and keep apples from falling off the trees before they ripen so they are red and firm for storage. It was produced in the U.S. by the Uniroyal Chemical Company, Inc,, which registered daminozide for use on fruits intended for human consumption in 1963. In addition to apples and ornamental plants, they also registered it for use on cherries, peaches, pears, Concord grapes, tomato transplants, and peanut vines. Alar was first approved for use in the U.S. in 1963. It was primarily used on apples until 1989, when the manufacturer voluntarily withdrew it after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed banning it based on concerns about cancer risks to consumers.

Chlorpyrifos (CPS), also known as Chlorpyrifos ethyl, is an organophosphate pesticide that has been used on crops, animals, and buildings, and in other settings, to kill several pests, including insects and worms. It acts on the nervous systems of insects by inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. Chlorpyrifos was patented in 1966 by Dow Chemical Company.
Pesticide residue refers to the pesticides that may remain on or in food after they are applied to food crops. The maximum allowable levels of these residues in foods are often stipulated by regulatory bodies in many countries. Regulations such as pre-harvest intervals also often prevent harvest of crop or livestock products if recently treated in order to allow residue concentrations to decrease over time to safe levels before harvest. Exposure of the general population to these residues most commonly occurs through consumption of treated food sources, or being in close contact to areas treated with pesticides such as farms or lawns.
The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), or H.R.1627, was passed unanimously by Congress in 1996 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 3, 1996. The FQPA standardized the way the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would manage the use of pesticides and amended the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act and the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. It mandated a health-based standard for pesticides used in foods, provided special protections for babies and infants, streamlined the approval of safe pesticides, established incentives for the creation of safer pesticides, and required that pesticide registrations remain current.

Pesticide regulation in the United States is primarily a responsibility of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In America, it was not till the 1950s that pesticides were regulated in terms of their safety. The Pesticides Control Amendment (PCA) of 1954 was the first time Congress passed guidance regarding the establishment of safe limits for pesticide residues on food. It authorized the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban pesticides they determined to be unsafe if they were sprayed directly on food. The Food Additives Amendment, which included the Delaney Clause, prohibited the pesticide residues from any carcinogenic pesticides in processed food. In 1959, pesticides were required to be registered.

He was formerly a senior advisor to the Administrator of EPA, and prior to that, a professor at the Risk Science Center at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Prior to joining the University of Cincinnati, he was founder and president of the nonprofit Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment. Earlier in his career, he was employed by the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Criteria and Assessment Office, among other assignments.
