Lynn A. Trujillo is an American lawyer and government official serving as the senior counselor to the United States Secretary of the Interior since February 2023. She is the first Native American woman in the role. Trujillo was the secretary of the New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs from January 2019 to November 2022.
Trujillo is a citizen of the Sandia Pueblo and also associated with the Acoma and Taos Pueblos. [1] [2] She earned a bachelor's degree at Dartmouth College. [3] She earned a University of New Mexico School of Law. [3]
Trujillo worked in tribal law and served as the general counsel of the Sandia Pueblo. [4] She also worked with the Acoma and Taos Pueblos. [3] Trujillo worked as the Native American coordinator for the United States Department of Agriculture's rural development programs. [4] In 2018,she was a lead attorney regarding a lawsuit about how the U.S. Federal Government manages the Indian Health Service,leading to a settlement. [5]
In January 2019,governor Michelle Lujan Grisham nominated Trujillo as the secretary of the New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs. [6] [4] Her appointment was confirmed in a 30-0 vote in February by the New Mexico Senate. [6] In this role,she led the state's first missing and murdered indigenous women and relatives task force. [7] She also collaborated with tribal leadership and legislators to enact legislation increasing funding of school districts in the state's Native American communities. [7] Trujillo stepped down in November 2022. [8] [7] She was succeeded by nominee James Mountain. [8]

The Pueblo of Laguna,New Mexico is a federally recognized tribe of Native American Pueblo people in west-central New Mexico,near the city of Albuquerque,in the United States. Part of the Laguna territory is included in the Albuquerque metropolitan area,chiefly around Laguna's Route 66 Resort and Casino. The name,Laguna,is Spanish and derives from the lake on their reservation. This body of water was formed by an ancient dam that was constructed by the Laguna people. After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680–1696,the Mission San Joséde la Laguna was erected by the Spanish at the old pueblo and finished around July 4,1699.
Oasisamerica is a cultural region of Indigenous peoples in North America. Their precontact cultures were predominantly agrarian,in contrast with neighboring tribes to the south in Aridoamerica. The region spans parts of Northwestern Mexico and Southwestern United States and can include most of Arizona and New Mexico;southern parts of Utah and Colorado;and northern parts of Sonora and Chihuahua. Marie Zieu Chino (1907–1982) was a Native American potter from Acoma Pueblo,New Mexico. Marie and her friends Lucy M. Lewis and Jessie Garcia are recognized as the three most important Acoma potters during the 1950s. Along with Juana Leno,they have been called "The Four Matriarchs" who "revived the ancient style of Acoma pottery." The inspiration for many designs used on their pottery were found on old potsherds gathered to use for temper. Together they led the revival of ancient pottery forms including the Mimbres,Tularosa and other various cultures in the Anasazi region. This revival spread to other potters who also accepted the old styles,which led to new innovative designs and variations of style and form.
Solomon Bibo was a German Yiddish trader in the American Old West who became governor of Acoma Pueblo,equivalent of the tribal chief. He was the only non-Native person ever to serve as a governor of the Acoma Pueblo.

The All Pueblo Council of Governors is a non-profit Puebloan leadership organization and political entity. They represent the 20 modern Pueblos –19 across New Mexico and one in Texas –on legislative,cultural and government issues. Some of the issues they fight for are the Pueblo Land Claims Act and the Indian Civil Rights Acts of 1968. They advocate for the sovereign rights of the Puebloan people and promote educational and economic advancement of the Pueblo nations. The council works to preserve the language,culture and traditions of the 20 pueblos.
