Jeff Kintu, better known by his stage name Lyrical G, is a Ugandan rapper, songwriter, record producer, and vocalist. [1] In 2016, he was named among MTV Base's best hip hop artistes from Uganda. [2] [3]

Lyrical G has won a number of accolades including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th edition of the MTN UG Hiphop Awards 2020, [4] also winning 4 Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards including Best Hiphop Artiste Of The Year (2005 & 2006) PAM awards. [5]

Early life and education

Lyrical G was born on 8 March 1978. He went to Nakasero Primary School and Budo Junior School for his primary education. He proceeded to St Charles Lwanga SS Kasasa and Katikamu SDA for his secondary education. He later enrolled in Nkumba University where he graduated,having majored in Business Studies. [6]

Music

Lyrical G started his rap career in the 1990s in his high school, performing at various music concerts.[ citation needed ] He released his first single "Ato’oba" with his former group Bataka Underground in March 1999 and that same year the group then released their second single "Ssesetula", which was launched on Power FM. He performed with Bataka Underground until he, with young brother AKay47 and friends, formed Urban Thugz (which later became Urban Life) in 2000. He recorded his first single "Nothing Compares" with Urban Life in 2001 after they won a recording deal for being the best upcoming group at the Sanyu FM music Carnival.[ citation needed ] ‘Nothing Compares’ was released in Feb 2002 on Sanyu FM.

In mid 2002, he pursued a solo career [7] Lyrical G has worked with South African rapper Proverb, T.I.D from Tanzania, the UK's Mas Law, Typical Fefe & Tyonne from Barbados and Outrageous Records in South Africa. [8]

He has released a record 10 studio albums, "Live From East Africa" released in 2004, "Narudi" in 2006, "First and Flow Most" in 2007, "Tha GMC Project" released in 2009, "Simple & Plain", 2010,"1st & Flow Most 2:Back 2 Basics"(2012),"Grown Man Talk", 2013 ,"Feel Good Music", 2014, "Geezy",2019 and 'OG',2023. Joseph Mayanja, better known by the stage name Jose Chameleone, is a Ugandan AfroBeat artist and musician. Chameleone sings in Luganda, English, and Swahili.

Blu 3 was a Ugandan all-female band formed in April 2004 after winning the TV show Coca Cola Popstars. The name is contrived to mean 3 Beautiful Ladies from Uganda. Original members were Jackie Chandiru, Lilian Mbabazi and Cinderella Sanyu. After winning the contest, they went on to record the albums Hitaji (2004) and Burrn (2007). The Hitaji album spawned the hit singles "Hitaji", "Frisky" and the afro beat "Tomalaako". The girls launched Hitaji at lugogo cricket stadium in December 2004 with thousands of fans. The "Hitaji" video went on to win the Pearl of Africa Music Award for Video of the Year.

GNL Zamba, born Ernest Nsimbi, is a hip hop artist in Uganda, credited with bringing rap and Lugaflow style of music to mainstream radio and other media in Uganda.

Daniel Lubwama Kigozi is a Ugandan rapper and record producer. Starting off his career, he was part of the award-winning hip hop group Klear Kut that introduced the term "Ugaflow" to describe Uganda's hip hop scene. Navio is best known for his successful solo career with hits such as "Ngalo", "Bugumu", "One & Only", and "On and On".

Cinderella Sanyu is a Ugandan musician. She was one of the original members of Blu*3 which also consisted of Lilian Mbabazi and Jackie Chandiru. She has performed with P-Square, Wahu, Beenie Man, Ne-Yo, Tiwa savage, Bobi Wine, Shaggy, Chameleon, Bebe Cool, Davido, Mr. G and Radio & Weasel.

Ragga Dee, born Daniel Kazibwe, is a Ugandan musician and politician. He contested for mayor of Kampala in the 2016 general elections. Currently, Ragga Dee serves as An Arts Administrator representing Art on the Private Sector Foundation Executive as well as Being Chairman National Culture Forum.

Babaluku, born Silas Babaluku Balabyekkubo, is a Ugandan rapper, musician, producer, community youth activist and social entrepreneur who raps in Luganda. He is a member of the Bataka Squad. He is the founder of "the Bavubuka Foundation which equips the youth with leadership skills". He is one of the pioneers of "Lugaflow" which is rap music in Luganda. He was featured in a 2008 documentary "Diamonds in the Rough: A Ugandan Hip-hop Revolution" that covered his journey from his crew’s early days of performing in Uganda to performing in at festivals in the United States of America.

I-Am Enygma, better known by his stage name Enygma, is a Ugandan rapper, record producer, executive producer and entrepreneur known for his wordplay laced rhymes and always wearing a mask on his face so as to conceal his identity. He rose to fame in December 2010 following the runaway success of his single, Hustler's Night featuring The mith, Keko and Navio. This was followed up by even more celebrated hits in 2011, namely F.U.M.E.M.E. and Ten Reasons. He also represents one third of occasional rap group Klarity alongside The Mith and Lyrikal Proof. Also frequently collaborates with other artists such as Ruyonga, Maurice Kirya and Lyrical G. As an entrepreneur, Enygma conducts private business, mostly outside of the entertainment industry.

Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Flex D'Paper was part of the 2014 UG Cypher including the finest Ugandan rappers: Navio, Keko, Big Tril, Don MC, AirporTaxi rappers St. Nelly Sade, GNL Zamba, DJ Global, JB, The Mith, Ruyonga, and Atlas.

Kampala Boy is the first studio album by Ugandan musician Flex D'Paper, released on 10 December 2021. The album features guest appearances from Swae Lee on the intro and songs with Navio, Fik Fameica, A Pass, Keko, Shena skies, Wake the Poet, Mozelo Kidz, Kemishan, Lagum the rapper. The production includes Aethan Music, Mio Made, Sam Lamara, Wake the Poet, Bad Chwezi and Lucian.
