M. Christopher Brown II is an American academic administrator and university president. He is the former president of Kentucky State University in Frankfort,Kentucky. [1]
Brown previously served as president of the nation's first historically black land-grant institution,Alcorn State University,and was the inaugural Executive Vice President and Provost of the Southern University System and Southern University campus.[ citation needed ] He held the same position at Fisk University,where he was also a professor.[ citation needed ]
Prior to this appointment,he served as dean of the College of Education at the University of Nevada,Las Vegas,vice president for Programs and Administration at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education,director of Social Justice and Professional Development for the American Educational Research Association,as well as executive director and chief research scientist of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute of the United Negro College Fund. Brown has held faculty appointments at Pennsylvania State University,the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. [2]
Brown was named president of Alcorn State University in November 2010. In three years with the university,Brown was regarded for efforts to increase enrollment at the historically black college, [3] which grew to more than 4,000 for the first time in the school's history in 2011. [4] In October 2012,months after Alcorn was named 'HBCU of the Year' by the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy, [5] Brown accepted a unanimous four-year extension of his contract from the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees. [6]
In September 2012,Brown hired Jay Hopson as the first white head football coach in the history of Alcorn State,and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. [7] In 2014,Hopson and the Braves won the school's first SWAC conference football championship in 20 years. [8]
In 2013,under Brown's leadership,Alcorn State University unveiled a statue of civil rights activist and ASU alumnus Medgar Evers,the largest of its kind in the world. [9] That same year,Brown was named HBCU Male President of the Year by the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy. [10]
Brown resigned from Alcorn State University in 2013 following allegations of improper procurement practices for campus event contracts and facility renovations by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.[ citation needed ] State higher education and law enforcement officials never published direct connections of wrongdoing to Brown's authorization of contracts,and did not file charges against or require reimbursement from any current or former employees. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports;in football,it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS),formerly referred to as Division I-AA.

A Moderate Republican and Whiggish "scalawag",he engaged in a bitter rivalry with Radical Republican Adelbert Ames,who defeated him in the 1873 gubernatorial race. Alcorn was the first elected Republican governor of Mississippi.
Wiley University is a private historically black college in Marshall,Texas. Founded in 1873 by the Methodist Episcopal Church's Bishop Isaac Wiley and certified in 1882 by the Freedman's Aid Society,it is one of the oldest predominantly black colleges west of the Mississippi River.

The Jackson State–Southern football rivalry,often informally called the BoomBox Classic,is a college football rivalry between the Tigers of Jackson State University (JSU) and the Jaguars of Southern University (SU). An annual conference game between two historically black universities in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC),its location usually rotates between JSU's Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson,Mississippi and SU's A. W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge,Louisiana,but it has also been held at larger venues to accommodate the large crowds that the game draws. As of 2022,the Jaguars lead the series 35–32,not including two wins that Southern was ordered to vacate by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Davey Lee Whitney Sr.,also known as "The Wiz",was an American college basketball coach and the head basketball coach at Texas Southern University from 1964 to 1969 and Alcorn State University from 1969 to 1989 and 1996 to 2003. He amassed a total record of 566 wins and 356 losses in 33 seasons of coaching at both institutions.
The MEAC/SWAC Challenge is an annual historically black college (HBCU) football game showcasing a team from each of the two NCAA Division I conferences made up entirely of HBCUs—the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The series began in 2005 and initially paired the defending conference champions,although the selection process was broadened in 2007 to include non-champions as well. Following the 2022 game,the MEAC leads the series with 10 wins to the SWAC's five. The Challenge is televised nationally on ESPN and is owned by ESPN Events. It was historically associated with the Labor Day weekend,but starting in 2021 has instead taken place a week earlier during college football's Week 0.

James Walter Hopson is an American football coach and former player. In 2016,Hopson made history as the only head coach in the history of the state of Mississippi to guide two different in-state universities to bowl games when he led the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a victory in the New Orleans Bowl. During his head-coaching tenure with the University of Southern Mississippi (2016–2020),Hopson ushered the Golden Eagles to four straight bowl-eligible seasons,with his defenses and offenses ranking in the top-5 and top-25 in the NCAA,respectively. Additionally,in his four full seasons from 2016 to 2019,Hopson guided the University of Southern Mississippi to 20 conference wins,which made him the second-winningest coach in Conference-USA during that span.
Felecia Diane McInnis Nave is an American chemical engineer and academic administrator. She is the 20th president of Alcorn State University and the first female to serve in the position.
The 2020 Alabama A&M Bulldogs football team represented Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bulldogs were led by third-year head coach Connell Maynor and played their home games at Louis Crews Stadium in Huntsville,Alabama as members of the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. On July 20,2020,the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced that it would not play fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
