M. V. Vishnu Namboothiri was a teacher, folk art researcher and author from Kerala, India. He was considered an authoritative source of information on Theyyam and other traditional art forms of North Malabar. [1] He received several awards including awards from Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Kerala Folklore Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.
Vishnu Namboothiri was born on 25 October 1939 to Mithale Vattaparam Illath Subramanian Namboothiri and Draupadi Antarjanam in Kunnaru, Ramantali in present-day Kannur District of Kerala. [2] After completing his graduation in Malayalam, he started his professional career as a primary teacher in Malayalam and also became a teacher at high school and higher secondary levels. [2] He has served as a Malayalam teacher at Kannur University's Kanhangad P Memorial Campus and as Head of the Malayalam Department at Kaladi Sreesankaracharya Sanskrit University's Payyannur Center. He also served as a Sarvavijnanakosam advisory committee member and research guide at Kozhikode, Kaladi, Kannur and MG universities. He retired from Ramantali Govt High School. [2] He was also the former chairman of Kerala Folklore Academy. [3]
Vishnu Namboothiri and his wife Suvarnini have three children, Subramanian, Lalithambika and Muralidharan. [1] He died on 9 March 2019, at Payyannur, Kerala. [1] In the obituary of his death, the then Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Vishnu Namboothiri was one of the pioneers of folklore study and research in Kerala. [3]
Vishnu Namboothiri has done many years of research on kavus and theyyams and other religious and folk art forms of Kerala. [2] He has authored 69 books in the genre folklore, including Keralathile Nadodi vijnanathinu oru mukhavura (meaning An Introduction to the Folklore of Kerala), Folklore chinthakal, Puravritha padanam (study on myths of Kerala), Namboothiri bhasha shabdakosham (a dictionary on language of Namboothiris), Mukhadarshan, Pulluvanpattum Nagaradhanayum (book on Pulluvan Paattu and snake worship in Kerala), Mandravadavum Mantravadappattum (book on traditional black magic and black magic songs in Kerala), Vannanum konthronpattum (book on folk music of Kerala), Pulayarude pattukal (book on folk songs of Pulayar community in Kerala), Kothamuri, Thottam pattukal oru padanam (a study on Thottam Pattu), Theyyavum thirayum, Theyyam, Nadodivijnjaneeyam, Poorakkali (a study on Poorakkali), Gaveshana Praveshika (meaning research entry), Keralathile Nadan sangeetham (a book on folk music of Kerala), Thottam, Nadanpattu Manjari, Pottanattam, Vivaranathmaka folklore granthasoochi (descriptive folklore bibliography) etc. [4] [2]
Theyyam are Hindu ritual practiced in northern Kerala and some parts of Karnataka. Theyyam is also known as Kaḷiyāṭṭaṁ or Tiṟa. Theyyam consists of traditions, rituals and customs associated with temples and sacred groves of Malabar. The people of the region consider Theyyam itself as a channel to a god and they thus seek blessings from Theyyam.

The Government of India honored him with the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2014 and the Government of Kerala awarded him the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award in Malayalam, the same year. He was also a recipient of Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions, Asan Prize, Sahitya Akademi Award and Odakkuzhal Award.
Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboodiri or Nelliyod Vasudevan Namboodiri was a Kathakali artiste, noted primarily for his vibrant portrayal of the evil chuvanna thaadi roles of the classical Kathakali dance-drama from Kerala in south India. He was also very famous and known for the characters 'Kuchelan' from Kuchelavritham and 'Aashaari' from Bakavadham.
Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, popularly known as Akkitham, was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam. He was known for a simple and lucid style of writing, exploring themes of profound love and compassion in his works. Some of his prominent works included Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam, Balidarshanam , and Nimisha Kshetram.
Malappurath Raman Chandrasekharan, popularly known as M.R. Chandrasekharan or simply M. R. C., is a Malayalam literary critic and author from Kerala, India. Chandrasekharan has published more than 50 books in different literary sections like literary criticism, translations, politics, social etc. He also works in the field of journalism and education. He won the 2010 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Literary Criticism.

K. Kunhiraman who writes under the pen name K. Panoor is a civil rights activist, poet and writer from Kerala, India. He has received several noted awards including the UNESCO Award, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions and Award from the Department of Culture, India government. Panoor's books were used as textbooks in various universities in Kerala. He played a key role in the formation of the Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (CHRO) and was its first chairman.
Keralathile Africa which literally means "Africa in Kerala" is a Malayalam language book written by Indian civil rights activist K. Panoor. In the book, he narrated the annoying scenes he saw during his official journey. The book, which depicts the realities of tribal life, caused a great deal of controversy. The book was published in 1963. It has become an important resource for students, researchers and government officials alike.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award is an award given by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Instituted in 1962, the awards are given in the categories of music, dance, theatre, other traditional arts, and for contribution/scholarship in performing arts. The award consists of Rs. 30,000, a citation and a plaque. The recipients of the award are also conferred the title Kalasree.
