The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2016 was an event of the World Surf League for 2016 World Surf League Men's Championship Tour. [1]

MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal formerly known as Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal or Rip Curl Pro Portugal is a professional surfing competition of the ASP World Tour held every year in October at the Supertubos beach in Peniche, Portugal. The event was first founded in 2009 as Rip Curl Search Portugal. The defending champion is the Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina who won the event in 2017.

World Surf League Governing body for professional surfers

The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was previously known as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) from 1983 to 2014. The organization was founded in 1976 by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick.

2016 World Surf League sporting competition event

The 2016 World Surf League World Championship Tour (WCT) is a professional competitive surfing league run by the World Surf League. Men and women compete in separate tours with events taking place from late February to mid-December, at various surfing locations around the world. Surfers receive points for their best events. The surfer with the most points at the end of the tour is announced the 2016 World Surf League Surfing World Champion.

This event was held from 18 to 29 October in the Supertubos beach at Peniche, (Leiria, Portugal), with 36 surfers competing. [2] Due to the lack of conditions, the organization explored some good surfing spots in the peninsula to end the event in the correct date and some stages of the event were also held at Point Fabril beach between Almagreira and Pico da Mota in Ferrel(pt). Soon as the good waves came back to Supertubos the organization switched again of place. [3]

Supertubos

Supertubos is a wave and beach located in Peniche, Portugal. The break offers world-class surfing conditions with its curvy waves and hollow powerful tubes, and is the site of the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal the World Surf League Men's Championship Tour event.

Peniche is a seaside municipality and a city in Portugal. It is located in Oeste Subregion in formerly Estremadura Province. The population in 2011 was 27,753, in an area of 77.55 km2. The city itself has a population of about 15,600 inhabitants.

The tournament was won by John John Florence, who beat the rookie Conner Coffin in the final. [4]

John John Florence American surfer

John "John" Alexander Florence is an American professional surfer. He is known as "one of the most dominant Pipe surfers of his era" and won the title of 2017 World Surf League Men's Champion, making him and his arch-rival, Gabriel Medina currently even in terms of world titles. He is the first Hawaii-born surfer to win back-to-back world titles since the late great Andy Irons.

Gabriel Medina Pinto Ferreira is a Brazilian professional surfer, also the 2014 and 2018 WSL World Champion. Medina joined the world's elite of the World Surf League Tour in 2011, and in his rookie year he finished within the top 12 of the ASP World Tour at the age of 17. In March 2014 he won the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Media sources credit him as being the second person to have executed a maneuver called the "Backflip". Medina also became the first person ever to land this move in competition.

Courtney Conlogue is an American professional surfer. She was born in Santa Ana, California. Courtney learned to surf at the age of 4. In 2004 when she was 11, Conlogue was the youngest athlete to be selected to the USA Junior Surf Team. She went on to achieve 11th place in the 2005 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. By the time she was 14, she had won a surfing gold medal as a member of the U.S. Team in the X Games. When she was 17 she won the biggest competition in the US at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing, held at her home break in Huntington Beach, California.

Johanne Defay French surfer

Johanne Defay is a French professional surfer. She was born in Le Puy-en-Velay, Auvergne, France. She began surfing at the age of 8 off the beaches of Reunion Island, which is her home today. After Johanne's first competition when she was only ten years old, she quickly moved through the European amateur ranks to eventually take on the WSL World Qualifying Series. In 2008 she almost gave up competing. Finding it difficult to step up from the juniors to the WQS and then when the economy crashed sending surf companies pulling sponsorships, Johanne found herself without sponsors and without decent results. With her parents’ encouragement Johanne was able to qualify for the WCT within two years.

The Rip Curl Pro 2017 was an event of the Association of Surfing Professionals for 2017 World Surf League. This was held from 12 to 24 April at Bells Beach, and contested by 36 surfers. Jordy Smith beats Caio Ibelli and won the 2017 Rip Curl Pro Bell Beach.

The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2018 was an event in the 2018 World Surf League Men's Championship Tour.

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2019 was the second event of the Men's Championship Tour in the 2019 World Surf League. It took place from 17 to 27 April in Bells Beach, Victoria, and was contested by 36 surfers.

Kanoa Igarashi is an American professional surfer of Japanese origin born the1st October 1997 in Santa Monica, California. He qualifies for the first time for the Championship Tour in 2016.
