MISC Berhad (MYX : 3816) was incorporated in 1968 as Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad and is the leading international shipping line of Malaysia. In September 2005, Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad adopted its present corporate identity and changed its name to MISC Berhad. Its main shareholder is Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), the national oil conglomerate of Malaysia. The principal business of the corporation consist of ship owning, ship operating, other shipping related activities, owning and operating of offshore floating facilities as well as marine repair, marine conversion and engineering and construction works. With a fleet of more than 120 vessels and a combined tonnage of more than 13,000,000 DWT.
Malaysia International Shipping Corporation was founded in 1968 by Robert Kuok on request of the Malaysian government. Kuok, who had no experience in the business, sought the help of the Hong Kong-Chinese shipping magnate, Frank Tsao. [1] For his help with establishing the business, Tsao was conferred the title of Tan Sri by the King of Malaysia. [2]
MISC is a specialist in Energy Transportation.[ clarification needed ] The company HQ is located at Menara Dayabumi in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With 29 LNG carriers, it is currently one of the world's leading operator of LNG fleet. Through its wholly owned subsidiary AET, MISC is one of the leading global tanker operators[ citation needed ] and a market leader in lightering operations for US Gulf ship-to-ship transfers.[ citation needed ]
MISC also freights vegetable oil and chemical products, with major trading routes that include South East Asia, the Far East, Middle East, Europe, the Indian Subcontinent and the Americas.
The company has also ventured into offshore business, offering customers a full scope of offshore floating facility services – from design to operations. Through Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE), MISC provides marine repair, marine conversion, engineering and construction for a wide spectrum of oil & gas production facilities.
On 24 November 2011, MISC announced its exit from the liner business (container shipping). In its announcement through the local Bursa Malaysia stock exchange, MISC explained that the radical change in the operating dynamics of the liner industry which is driven by high operating cost and rapid changes in global trade patterns is challenging the validity of today's operating models. A cargo ship or freighter is a merchant ship that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. AET Tankers (AET) is a Malaysian-owned Singapore-headquartered owner and global operator of crude and clean petroleum tankers alongside specialist activities including dynamic positioning shuttle tankers (DPSTs), hydro-carbon capture and ship-to-ship lightering to oil and gas companies, refineries and petroleum traders. A floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. An FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline. FPSOs are preferred in frontier offshore regions as they are easy to install, and do not require a local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. FPSOs can be a conversion of an oil tanker or can be a vessel built specially for the application. A vessel used only to store oil is referred to as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel.

There were 49 ships reported pirate attacks in the first three months of 2008, up from 41 in that period of 2007. According to the ICC International Maritime Bureau, in those attacks: "Seven crew members were taken hostage, six kidnapped, three killed and one missing – presumed dead." Up until mid-November 2008, more than 90 vessels had been attacked by pirates in the year. At the same time, with a more than 75 per cent increase since the previous year, pirates were holding 13 ships captive in the Somali ports of Eyl and Hobyo.
MV Manifa is an oil tanker formally owned and operated by Vela International Marine. With a length overall of 330 m (1,080 ft) and a capacity of 2.2 million barrels (350,000 m3) of crude oil, she is classified as a very large crude carrier or VLCC. Vela is based in the United Arab Emirates and is a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian state oil company Saudi Aramco. Sirius Star is one of Vela's 24 tankers, of which 19 are VLCCs. Since her launch, the ship has been registered in Monrovia under the Liberian flag of convenience. She has since been reflagged to Saudi Arabia

KA Bunga Mas Lima (BM5) is a container freighter purchased by the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and converted into an auxiliary ship. Bunga Mas Lima was the second ship owned by the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) to be deployed to the Gulf of Aden.

Operation Dawn 8: Gulf of Aden was a naval operation carried out by the Royal Malaysian Navy against pirates in the Indian Ocean on 20 January 2011. In response to the hijacking of MV Bunga Laurel, the Malaysian Shipborne Protection Team deployed an attack helicopter and 14 members of the naval counter-terrorism group PASKAL in two rigid-hulled inflatable boats to retake the vessel and rescue the crew. After one night of trailing the tanker, the Malaysian forces successfully retook the ship by force on 20 January 2011, resulting in the wounding of three and the capture of four out of 18 pirates, and all 23 vessel crewmembers rescued.
Hong Lam Marine is a ship owning company, and an operator of petroleum products and chemical tankers, based in Singapore. The company operates a fleet of 35 tankers, totaling a tonnage of 290 605 Deadweight-Tonnage (DWT). Hong Lam Marine has tankers operating within the ports of Singapore, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and in international waters. The tankers are purpose-built and its business activities are mainly in the chartering and ship management of these vessels. The tankers are used for bunkering marine fuels, transportation of jet fuel, supplying marine lubricants in bulk, drums and packs, and transportation of petroleum products and chemicals.
On 11 June 2015, eight Indonesian pirates hijacked the MT Orkim Harmony, a Malaysian tanker, in the South China Sea. The crew and the tanker were freed and recovered on 19 June near the southwest of Phú Quốc in Vietnam with the joint efforts of Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Air Force, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Australian Air Force, Vietnam Border Guard, Vietnam Coast Guard, Indonesian Navy and Royal Thai Navy.
On 18 November 2012, eleven Indonesian pirates hijacked MT Zafirah, a Malaysian tanker, in the South China Sea. The tanker crew was left by the pirates on a lifeboat in the sea two days after the hijacking but were subsequently rescued by Vietnamese fishing vessels on 21 November when their lifeboat was drifting around 118 nautical miles in the waters off Vietnam's southern Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province. All the pirates managed to be tracked by Vietnam Coast Guard and Vietnam People's Navy with information provided by Malaysian based International Maritime Bureau and Singaporean based RECAAP, which led to their arrest after a brief of standoff near Vũng Tàu port.
Bumi Armada Berhad is an oilfield services company which provides marine transportation, engineering and maintenance services to the offshore oil and gas industry. It is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and has operations in Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Africa, Central Africa, Europe, South America and the Caspian Sea region. It is the world's fifth largest floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) provider with six vessels.
KA Tun Azizan is an auxiliary ship currently in service with Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). She was sponsored by local company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and transferred from Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) to the RMN. Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) then change and modify a used cargo vessel to be used as a forward operation base operated by the Royal Malaysian Navy in Sulu Sea, Lahad Datu, Sabah to support the operation of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM). Since its operation in July 2015, KA TAZ operated under the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) with the appointment of commanding officers absorbed as member of the RMN Volunteer Reserve Team.
Amir Hamzah bin Azizan is a Malaysian corporate figure who has served as the Minister of Finance II and Senator since December 2023. He served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) from March 2021 to his resignation and political appointments in December 2023. He is the eldest son of Azizan Zainul Abidin, the former Chairman, President and CEO of Petronas.
