Chris Wondolowski has won a record seven Player of the Month awards, winning four of them in the 2012 season alone.

The Major League Soccer Player of Month is a monthly soccer award given to players in Major League Soccer. The honor is given to the player deemed to have had the best cumulative performance in each month by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters organization. [1] The award was formerly voted on by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. [2]

Since 2023, the award has been sponsored by energy drink company Celsius Holdings and named the MLS Player of the Month presented by CELSIUS.

The 2019 Major League Soccer season was the 24th season of Major League Soccer. The regular season began on March 2, 2019 and ended on October 6. The MLS Cup Playoffs began on October 19 and concluded with MLS Cup 2019 on November 10, under a new format that included 14 teams and consisted only of single-match rounds.

The 2019 Atlanta United FC season was the third season of Atlanta United FC's existence, and the eleventh year that a professional soccer club from Atlanta, Georgia competed in the top division of American soccer. Atlanta United played their home matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Outside of MLS, the team made their first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League and the Campeones Cup and won the 2019 U.S. Open Cup by beating Minnesota United FC 2–1. This marked the team's first year without former head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who was replaced with Frank de Boer.

The 2020 Portland Timbers season was the 34th season in their existence and the 10th season for the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top-flight professional soccer league in the United States and Canada.

The 2020 Philadelphia Union season was the club's eleventh season in Major League Soccer, the top flight of American soccer. The team was managed by Jim Curtin, his seventh season with the club. The Union's season began on February 29, 2020, and was scheduled on end in October or November 2020, depending on their regular season performance. On March 12, 2020, MLS suspended the season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Originally planned to be a 30-day suspension, the league remained suspended until July 9, 2020, when competition resumed with the MLS is Back Tournament. The tournament ran through August 11, 2020, with the remainder of the season, under a truncated format, continued through November 8, 2020.
