The MSRz Bene was a Hungarian two seat primary glider, first flown in 1952. By this time its competitor had been awarded a serial production order, so only one working Bene was ever completed.

Design and development

In 1948 the Hungarian National Flying Association (OMRE), which in 1951 became the Hungarian Aeronautical Association (MRSz), [1] invited tenders for a two seat primary glider; the runner-up was a design from Hugó Nagy and Tibor Bánsági. In 1950 they submitted a revised version, named Bene after Lajos Benicky the designer of the MSrE M-30 Fergeteg. [2]

The Bene had an all-wood, two part high wing, ball-jointed together on a short pedestal above the fuselage. In plan there was a rectangular inner section, occupying about a third of the span, and trapezoidal, round-tipped outer panels with most of the taper on the trailing edge. Each half-wing were built around a straight main spar at about 33% chord and an auxiliary spar at 70% chord. All wing surfaces were plywood covered. The wings were braced with a single strut on each side, joining the lower fuselage to the main spar towards the end of the inner panel. The inner panels carried inboard landing flaps and beyond them, Göppingen-type spoilers, mounted just ahead of the spar, which opened above and below the wings. Its split, differential, Frise-balanced ailerons filled all of the trailing edges of the outer panels. Unusually, another set of spoilers, mounted near the wingtips just aft of the auxiliary spar and opening only upwards, assisted turns. [2]

The fuselage was of mixed construction. The forward section, from the rear of the wing to the nose and including the pedestal, was built around a square cross-section, welded steel-tube girder with transverse frames shaping the curved fabric surface. Aft, it was a wooden structure. The pupil sat ahead of the wing, with the instructor under it at about 25% chord. His seat was higher than that of the pupil so he could see the single set of instruments and placed his head in a small gap between the half-wings forward of the main spar, giving him some upward vision as the one-piece canopy stretched back above the wing to the spar. The Bene did not land on a conventional glider landing skid but instead had a small nosewheel, a larger main wheel at the c.g. under the trailing edge and a small tailskid. Winch launches were made with a Y-ended cable that engaged a hook on each side of the nose. [2] [3]

The Bene's unswept, round-tipped tailplane was mounted on top of the fuselage and braced from below with a strut on each side. Its elevators were strongly tapered and cut away centrally for rudder movement. The fin was also unswept and round-tipped, carrying a broad, rounded rudder which reached down to the keel. [2]

After its maiden flight in mid 1952 the Bene received only limited testing, as the competing MRSz Z-03 Ifjúság had already received an order for serial production. The sole example was scrapped in 1954. [2]

Rubik R-07 Vöcsök

The Rubik R-07a Tücsök (Cicada) and R-07b Vöcsök (Grebe) were two versions of a Hungarian primary trainer, differing most obviously in the pilot's seating. First flown in the late 1930s, about 530 were built, some remaining in service into the 1960s.

Rubik R-08 Pilis Glider

The Rubik R-08 Pilis was a Hungarian single-seat, advanced training glider first flown in 1939. It was very successful; 269 were built in batches, the first starting in 1939 and the last in 1956.

Rubik R-11b Cimbora

The Rubik R-11b Cimbora (Pal) was a Hungarian two seat glider, first flown in 1940 and intended to introduce B-certificated pilots to aero-towing techniques. It proved popular and was also used to train pilots in ridge lift flying and set several national duration records.

The Lampisch LS-16 was a Hungarian training glider of mixed construction. It was flown but not granted a Certificate of Airworthiness.

Rubik R-12 Kevély

The Rubik R-12 Kevély (Proud) was a Hungarian advanced training glider. It was designed to provide safe cloud-flying experience and also raised the Hungarian height gained record several times. About fifty were built and operated between 1941 and 1951.

Rubik R-15 Koma

The Rubik R-15 Koma (Godfather) was a side-by-side seat Hungarian training glider designed to introduce pilots to winch-launching techniques. A second, very similar but single seat design, the Rubik R-16 Lepke, provided follow-up solo experience of the same techniques. Pairs were widely used by Hungarian glider clubs post-war, with 65 of each produced.

Rubik R-16 Lepke

The Rubik R-16 Lepke (Butterfly) was a single seat Hungarian training glider designed to follow the very similar but two seat Rubik R-15 Koma in a winch-launch training programme. The Lepke provided solo experience of the techniques learned with an instructor in an aircraft with similar handling characteristics. That done, the Lepke could be used as a standard trainer to take its pilot to C-certificate level. The pair were widely used by Hungarian glider clubs post-war, with sixty-five of each produced.

The Rubik R-17 Móka (Joy) was a Hungarian aerobatic glider designed in the late 1930s. One prototype was built and first flown in 1944 but was destroyed near the end of World War II. Two more, with modified ailerons and a new fuselage, were built in 1950 but were abandoned after a fatal accident.

Rubik R-22 Futár

The 1943 Hungarian Rubik R-22 Futár (Courier) family of single seat, high performance sailplanes was developed between 1943 and 1958, though production did not begin until 1948. Four variants were serially produced, with the R-22S Június 18 the most numerous. There were several improvements within the types and there were three one-offs. Overall, 104 were built. They set numerous national records and one finished runner-up for distance at the 1958 VIIth World Gliding Championships, coming 11th overall.

Kemény K-02

The Kemény K-02 Szellő was a Hungarian training glider from the late 1940s. It was originally designed for a national contest to build a primary trainer but when this was won by the Rubik R-16 Lepke it was resigned to have more advanced soaring capability which could take pilots to their Silver C badge. Ninety were produced.

MSrE M-30 Fergeteg

The MSrE M-30 Fergeteg (Storm) was a Hungarian two seat advanced training glider. Originally designed in the early 1940s, its first flight was not made until 1950. Though five variants were developed, only six M-30s were built.

MRSz Z-03 Ifjúság

The MRSz Z-03A Ifjúság (Youth) was a Hungarian advanced training glider built in the 1950s, capable of both aerobatic and, with the revised Z-03B, blind flying instruction. They were removed from service in 1960 after fatigue analysis revealed that the fuselage structure at the wing attachment point had only a short life.

MRSz Z-04 Béke Aerobatic glider

The MRSz Z-04 Béke (Peace) was a Hungarian aerobatic glider. First flown in 1955, it became a familiar display aircraft, though only one was built.

Rubik R-23 Gébics

The Rubik R-23 Gébics (Shrike) was a Hungarian advanced training glider, the first of a series of metal-framed gliders designed by Ernő Rubik, though only one Gébics was built.

Rubik R-31 Dupla

The Rubik R-31 Dupla (Double) was a Hungarian side-by-side seat training glider first flown in 1983. Disappointing performance and vibration problems prevented it going into production.

The PGE EV.1K Fecske (Swallow) was a high performance Hungarian sailplane designed and flown in the late 1960s. The sole example was destroyed in a fatal crash in 1970.
