Madan Rao (born 11 July 1960) is an Indian condensed matter and biological physicist and a senior professor at National Centre for Biological Sciences. Known for his research on molecular dynamics on cell surface, Rao is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 2004. Born on 11 July 1960, Madan Rao did his master's studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay to earn an MSc in physics in 1982 and proceeded to do his doctoral studies on Hysteresis in Model Spin Systems at the Indian Institute of Science under the guidance of H. R. Krishnamurthy and Rahul Pandit, Both Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar laureates. [2] After securing a PhD in 1988, he continued at IISc to do his post-doctoral work, mentored by M. Wortis, in the disciplines of membranes, soft matter and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Hr started his career as an associate professor at Raman Research Institute in 1989 and moved to the National Centre for Biological Sciences, a centre for advanced studies on biological research, when "Simon's Centre for the Study of Living Machines", then known as "Theory Group", was established there, where he holds the position of a senior professor. [3] At NCBS, he works in close association with Satyajit Mayor, a biologist and a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar laureate. [4] He is also associated with the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research as an associate faculty. [5]

Rao lives in Bengaluru, in the south Indian state of Karnataka. [6]

Legacy

At NCBS, Rao worked on non-equilibrium properties of membranes and martensitic transformation [7] and is known to have made significant contributions in providing a wider understanding of chirality-induced budding and dynamics of intracellular trafficking. [8] Molecular dynamics at cell surface, membrane dynamics , golgi and mitochondrial morphogenesis, chromatin organization, soft active matter physics and biomolecular dynamics are some of the other areas he has worked on. [9] His studies have been documented by way of a number of articles [10] [note 2] and the online article repository of the Indian Academy of Sciences has listed 33 of them. [11] He was also a member of the organizing committee of the Conference on Frontiers in Materials Modelling and Design held in Kalpakkam in 1996. [12]

Awards and honors

B. M. Birla Science Centre awarded Rao their annual B. M. Birla Science Prize in 1997 [13] and he received the Swarnajayanti Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology in 1998. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2004. [14] During 2007–11, he received two research fellowships; Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Grant (2007) [15] as well as the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA) Grant. [2] [16] The Indian Academy of Sciences elected him as a fellow in 2011 [17] and his alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai chose his as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2016. [18] He received the elected fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy in 2017. [19]

Mohan Rao Chintalagiri is an Indian molecular biologist renowned for his contributions to the fields of biophysics and molecular biology. He has earned international recognition for his work on molecular chaperones as well as his contribution to the field of photoacoustic spectroscopy in health and disease. He is a former Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and served as a CSIR-Distinguished Scientist. He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1999, the highest science honor in India.

Satyajit Mayor (born 1963) is an Indian biologist. He serves as director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore. Mayor is the former director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem) at Bangalore, which has a focus on the study of stem cell and regenerative biology.

Yamuna Krishnan is a professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Chicago, where she has worked since August 2014. She was born to P.T. Krishnan and Mini in Parappanangadi, in the Malappuram district of Kerala, India. She was earlier a Reader in National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore, India. Krishnan won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology, the highest science award in India in the year 2013 in the Chemical Science category.

Rama Govindarajan is an Indian scientist specialized in the field of fluid dynamics. She previously worked at the Engineering Mechanics Unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research from 1998 to 2012 and as a professor at the TIFR Hyderabad Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences from 2012 to 2016. As of 2019 she is working as a professor at International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru. Govindarajan is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for the year 2007.

Roop Mallik is an Indian biophysicist who works on nanoscale molecular motor proteins that transport material such as viruses, mitochondria, endosomes etc. inside living cells. The motors, such as kinesin and dynein generate forces of pico-newton order to carry our various cellular processes namely cell division, vesicular transport, endocytosis, molecular tethering etc. His lab is working to understand how motor proteins help in degradation and clearance of pathogens, and also how these motors work inside the liver to maintain systemic lipid homeostasis in the animal. Mallik is currently a professor at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Ramakrishnan Nagaraj is an Indian biochemist, molecular biologist and the leader of a team of scientists working in the field of peptide biochemistry at Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). He is known for his studies on hemolytic and antibacterial properties in synthetic analogs of bacterial toxins. He is a J. C. Bose National fellow of the Department of Science and Technology at CCMB and an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded Nagaraj the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1994, for his contributions to biological sciences.

Jayant Bhalchandra Udgaonkar is an Indian biochemist, molecular biologist, and academic at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. He is the former Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, and was previously a senior professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. A J.C. Bose National Fellow, he is known for his studies on protein folding. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2000, for his contributions to biological sciences. Tapas Kumar Kundu is an Indian molecular biologist, academician and at present the Director of Central Drug Research Institute, a prestigious research institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lucknow. Arun Mallojirao Jayannavar was an Indian condensed matter physicist and a senior professor at the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. Known for his research on many interdisciplinary areas of condensed matter physics, Jayannavar was an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy.
