M.S. Muthu (born 20 July 1981) is a Pharmaceutical engineer, Scientist, Inventor and one of the twenty Institute Professors at the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, India. [1] He is a researcher in the fields of nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery, and in theranostics nanomedicine for imaging and therapy. [2]

Background and personal life

Dr. Muthu completed his Ph.D. research work under the supervision of Prof. Sanjay Singh from the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology, IIT (BHU), Varanasi, India. He has done his post-doctoral research in cancer nanotechnology under the supervision of Prof. Feng Si-Shen from the National University of Singapore in 2010 & 2014 (2yrs). Dr. Muthu is a Professor of Pharmaceutics in the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology, IIT(BHU). [1]

Contributions to nanomedicine and drug delivery

He is a widely recognized and cited researcher in drug delivery especially in the fields of nanotechnology and theranostics. He has published more than 120 research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals. His research work is mainly focused on targeted nanomedicine and/or nanotheranostic drug delivery of anti-cancer agents, antipsychotics, antithrombotics and antimicrobials. [2] [3] He is an editor in chief for the international peer-reviewed journal '' Research & Reviews: Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicological Studies ''. [4] Additionally, he is the editorial board member of the "Diagnostics and Therapeutics" Journal published by Luminescience press is based in Hong Kong with offices in Wuhan and Xi’an, China. He is among the top 2% scientist globally, list compiled by the Stanford University. [5] [6] His profile has been listed at the 6th rank in IIT BHU as per Adscientific index. [7]

Awards and honors

Muthu received various scientific awards from government and non-government organization including the BOYSCAST Fellowship, Academic Excellence Award, CREST Award, IMS-Research Publication Award, BHU Vice-Chancellor's Medical Research Award, International Faculty Award, and Best Young Scientist Award. [8] He is the recipient of the BIRAC-DBT-Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award in 2017, from the President of India for advancing nanomedicine research. [9] [10] His research work has secured Rs. 2.19 crores funds from various government funding agencies, which includes SERB, DST, DBT, ICMR, and BIRAC. He has been elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (NASI), India in 2019. Additionally, he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Recently, he has developed targeted nanomedicine for breast cancer therapy with reduced systemic toxicity, which has successfully demonstrated its efficacy in preclinical studies. [11]

Pulickel Madhavapanicker Ajayan, known as P. M. Ajayan, is the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering at Rice University. He is the founding chair of Rice University's Materials Science and NanoEngineering department and also holds joint appointments with the Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Prior to joining Rice, he was the Henry Burlage Professor of Material Sciences and Engineering and the director of the NYSTAR interconnect focus center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute until 2007. Known for his pioneering work of designing and carrying out the first experiments to make nanotubes intentionally.

Ashok Jhunjhunwala is an Indian academic and innovator. He received his B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and PhD from the University of Maine. He has been a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras since 1981. He is the President of IIT Madras Research Park and Chairman of International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. During his career, he has contributed extensively to technology innovation and adoption in the Indian context.

Kota Harinarayana is an aviation engineer. He was born in Brahmapur. He was appointed as chairman of the board of governors of IIT (BHU), Varanasi by Hon'ble President of India on 25 August 2020 for three years. He was the vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and the president of the Aeronautical Society of India.

Bhauratar is a village development committee in Parsa District in the Narayani Zone of southern Nepal. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 9,233 people living in 1,333 individual households. There were 4,863 males and 4,370 females at the time of census. The neighbouring villages are Gamariya, Bishrampur, Chhapkaiya and Phoolkawal belongs to Bahudarmai nagarpalika. Vladimir Petrovich Torchilin is a Soviet, Russian and American biochemist, pharmacologist, and an expert in medical nanotechnology. Torchillin is a University Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University. He also serves as a director at both the Center for Translational Cancer Nanomedicine and at the Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Nanomedicine at Northeastern University.

Onkar Nath Srivastava was an Indian material physicist, an Emeritus professor of Banaras Hindu University and the vice president for India and South Asia of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, who was known for his contributions to the disciplines of nanotechnology and hydrogen energy. He was the author of two books and over 440 scientific papers and a recipient of several honors including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Ashok M. Raichur is an Indian materials scientist, nanotechnologist and a professor at the Department of Materials Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Known for his studies on the use of nanotechnology for biomedical and environmental applications, Raichur is a former Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and a life member of the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2009.

Hamid Ghandehari is an Iranian-American drug delivery research scientist, and a professor in the Departments of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah. His research is focused in recombinant polymers for drug and gene delivery, nanotoxicology of dendritic and inorganic constructs, water-soluble polymers for targeted delivery and poly(amidoamine) dendrimers for oral delivery.

Bushra Ateeq is a Professor and a Senior Fellow of the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur specializing in cancer biology and molecular oncology. She was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Medical Sciences in the year 2020. Her research interest involves exploration of the genetic and epigenetic changes that initiate cancer and its progression. She is also focusing on understanding the molecular events that drive cancer and resistance towards chemotherapeutic drugs.

Rohit Srivastava is a professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioegineering at IIT Bombay specialising in medical diagnostic devices, nanoengineered materials and photothermal cancer therapy. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Medical Sciences in the year 2021 for his contributions to the development of affordable medical devices.
