Maharaj Bada or Maharaja Square is one of the most significant and lively place of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is known as the most beautiful square in Asia [1] consisting of six different halls namely: the Victoria Hall, the Town Hall, the Gwalior State Minting Hall, the American Hall, the Saudi Hall and the Opera Hall. Maharaj Bada, which is locally called as Bada, is the central focus of Lashkar subcity of Gwalior, with a large square know as Jayaji Chowk or Jayaji Square all these buildings are now have been taken by the State Government in its services. Maharaj Bada also has Gorkhi School, Subhash Market and Nazar Bagh Market. [2]
Thriving bazaars surround the chowk. There are several jewelry shops situated near Maharaj bada. It is one of the prime or important markets of Gwalior, as well as Madhya Pradesh. There are several significant and big markets located at or near Maharaj Bada, some of those are Sarafa Bazaar, Topi Bazaar, Subhash Market named after Subhash Chandra Bose, Nazarbagh Market, Gandhi Market, Daulat Ganj etc. Apart from these big markets, there are several small markets around the Maharaj Bada area. Victoria Market, an old major stationery, books and garments market, located at Bada, caught fire in June 2010, which also collapsed one portion of the historical Market building. There is a beautiful garden at large chowk, having statue of Maharaj Jiyaji Rao, in the centre of it. [3] [4]

When the Mughal Empire was declining, it fell into the hands of Jat rulers, then to the English in 1730, and last it was passed on to the Scindia Dynasty of Maratha Empire in early 18th century.

House of Scindia or earlier known as the Sendrak was a Hindu Maratha Royal House that ruled the erstwhile Gwalior State in central India. It had the Patil-ship of Kanherkhed in the district of Satara and was founded by Ranoji Scindia, who was sardar of maratha empire and real maratha warrior clan appointed by chattrapati shahuji maharaj-1's servant family from kokan worked as prime minister also known as Peshwa Bajirao I. Ranoji and his descendants, along with their rivals the Holkars, played a leading role during the Maratha ascendancy in northern India in the 18th-century. The Gwalior State became a princely state during the British Raj in the 19th and the 20th-centuries. After India's independence in 1947 and the abolition of princely states, several members of the Scindia Dynasty went on to enter Indian politics.

In 1903, with the introduction of Delhi-Chennai rail route through the state and Bhopal Junction railway station, the state got a good rail connectivity. Presently major portion of the state's rail connectivity is provided by the railway zone called West Central Railway.

Shinde Chhatri at Wanawadi in Pune, India is a memorial dedicated to the 18th century Maratha military leader Mahadji Shinde who served as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas from 1760 to 1780. It is one of the most significant landmarks in the city and is reminiscent of the Maratha rule. It is a hall that marks the spot of Mahadji Shinde's cremation on 12 February 1794.
